This has probably been done before, but...not by me.

What I want to know is WHAT your favorite Bible verse is, and WHY.

Does it comfort you? Bring you peace or joy? Remind you of what's important?

Here's mine:

"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them." -Luke 6:32

...because like it says, even sinners love those who love them. It's easy, so easy, to show Christ-like love to someone who is showing that to you. It's easy to be nice to people who are nice to you. It takes little or no sacrifice of self to love those who are good to you.

But to love, really love, people who are mean, people who dislike you, people who hate you...that takes work, it takes a change in your own heart, it takes prayer, it takes trust in God...

I like that the verse challenges me to go beyond my own selfish human nature, and to be more like Jesus.

(any more explanation and I might as well be over on the Work in Progress thread...)

In my profile, I said something like "Does anyone really have a favorite Bible verse?" because there are just so many that speak to me.

However, although I have many temporary favorites, I always seem to gravitate to Romans 2:4 -

Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? (ESV)

- because it reminds me of my motives for serving. We don't change our ways first, then come to Him. We can't earn brownie points with Him, or serve Him to atone for our sins. No. Anything (lasting) that we do is a response to and a by-product of His love for us.

My fav is...
1 John 4:20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother,he is a liar, for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

then after that...pretty much the entire book of JOB.

I'd explain why but as it seems pretty evident,MissCris is my female clonetrooper lol & her scripture is along the same lines, except this pertains to the church. We as christians so easily forget how to treat one another within the body of Christ with our bickering, opinionated ideas, and religious clicks...that we sometimes hurt each other worse than the world tries to hurt us...least if "feels" that way. So us,as the embodiment of Jesus in the flesh for the fleeting moments we have on earth need to remember that if the world doesn't see us in unity & love with one another, why would they ever believe that we serve a loving God that cares for them? We are all a work in progress...hopefully all working towards the same goal.

Psalm 91- where god and i met .. First place His word made sense
After trying to read the bible many times ..
This is were he found me . Completely broken in my cry out to Him

Isaiah 61- the second place God is with me currently ..where He has a yellow ribbon tied around an oak tree , like a gift .. He presented it to me full of His living water of life in it .. .revealing He has everything tied together about my life and what happened in it that brought me to where we are now.. I'm still sitting in the shade resting and Talking to Him about it .. He is bringing things into focus for me as he prepares me for His plan..

Romans 8: 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[SUP]k[/SUP] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is my favorite passage because it tells me that my God is more powerful than anything known or unknown and as long as I cling to Him, nothing can defeat me or separate me from Him. Nothing I go through and no one who comes against me will be able to keep me from Him. Not even death. :) It gives me perfect peace and casts out fear.

As the Lord has made music the central defining talent in my life, there is an immediate link to Psalm 150...but I especially delight in 2 Chronicles 20. Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir prepare to lay siege to Judah, and Jehoshaphat (the first really decent, God-fearing king in a long time since Solomon) prays...and then instead of sending out his army, he sends out his musicians, who launch into praise and worship of Yahweh. As the people of Judah join in, the Moabites, Ammonites, and Seirites turn on each other, and Jehoshaphat never fires a single arrow or pulls a blade from a scabbard.

Oh, and Romans. All of it. (Yes, chapter 8...but also...all of it.)

2 Timothy 1:7 "for god has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and self dicipline." I love the verse, because I lived in fear all my life of various things (I still have a lot of fears) and this verse reminds me that that isn't the way God intense it to be. I have the verse tattooed on my back, along with a cross to remind me of this everyday.

1 Cornthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. [SUP]5 [/SUP]It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.

Because God is love. And here are so clearly described who God is. We are also told 'above all else, love God and love your neighbor.' To me, this verse concisely summarizes the entirety of the Bible, describes how we should live and demonstrates God's nature.

My favorite is also Psalm 91.

We are in the midst of a spiritual war, and it is only through the grace and mercy and power of the Lord God Almighty that I can not only survive, but thrive.

A thousand may fall at my side, ten-thousand at my right hand, but it will not come near me. I will only look with my eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.

I have two favorites for different reasons. The first is... [h=3]Numbers 23:19[/h]New International Version (NIV)

God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?

Some versions say "God is not a man..." Honestly, I love this scripture because it reminds me that God is not human. We are made in his image; he is not made in ours. He doesn't lie. Not because he can't... it's because he won't. It's a character issue, not something he cannot do... it's something he refuses to do. It's also a OT promise that he finishes what he starts.

The second is...
[h=3]Romans 5:1-5[/h]New International Version (NIV)

[h=3]Peace and Hope[/h]5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

First off, I love Romans! The Pauline scriptures are by far my favorites. Second, I found this section to be important to me mostly because of the beginning of verse 5. "And hope does not put us to shame..." For so long I didn't bother hoping. It was just full of disappointment and I generally felt stupid when whatever I was hoping for didn't come to pass. But I realized that hope and expectation are two very different things. Hope is a version of faith and expectation is the assumption you're going to get your way. Another reason I love this set of verses is because it's a short and sweet explanation of doctrine and why going through our issues is a really important thing. It shows us there is a point to all the problems we deal with.

My favorite bible verse is 2:9-11
[SUP]9 [/SUP]I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. [SUP]10 [/SUP]Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

I love this verse because I have had so many different things happen in my life that make me feel like ive just been knocked down over and over again by the world...in this verse the Lord basically says that life is not going to be easy and you will suffer persecution and suffering....BUT after all that Christ will give you the crown of life...what could be better...it makes me cling to Him when I am hurting and cant carry on that he loves me he is carrying me and one day I will be in heaven with him and all my pain and sorrow will be no more..:)

"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them." -Luke 6:32

'But to love, really love, people who are mean, people who dislike you, people who hate you...that takes work, it takes a change in your own heart, it takes prayer, it takes trust in God...'

Loving people who dislike me has been hard lately, I'd love to love them but it might mean overlooking the offence. Usually, I try confrontation and resume loving when apologies have been made. Otherwise I ignore them like they don't exist, then there's no need to love. However, Luke 6.32 is to be obeyed if I truly love God.

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

This verse lifts me up. It encourages me to hope and wait on God...even in the most difficult situation.

Mine is Psalm 27:3. Though an army beseige me, my heart will not fear. Though war break out against me, even then i will be confident. This verse reminds me that no matter what I face I dont have to be afraid because God has everything under control and He gives me strength and confidence to fight what comes against me. It gives me joy and peace knowing that I dont need to fear a thing. This verse has helped me through a lot over the years.

Currently, I am hit by Hebrews chapter 12: 4 NIV. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
This is speaking to me simply because it says to me, "why are you down because of discipline or for trials? Jesus resisted sin to the point of death and shedding blood." I haven't seen anything like this and still I catch myself groaning about things that God has and is already taking care of. I am facing things that have already been defeated.

I tend to like the really offbeat, lesser-known, thumps-you-upside-the-head-type Scriptures.

Currently, I am obsessed with the "I AM" verses, such as:

Exodus 3:13-14 -- Then Moses asked, God, "If I go to the Israelites... and they ask who sent me... What should I tell them?"
God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

John 8:56-58 -- "Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day; he saw it and rejoiced." The Jews replied, "You are not yet 50 years old, and yet You've seen Abraham?"

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth: Before Abraham was born, I AM."

KA-BAM!!! My personal spiritual obsession is really learning WHO God is and WHAT His personality consists of. I LOVE these verses because there is something so raw and powerful, yet mysterious about who God is: NOT "I WAS" or "I WILL BE", but "I AM." "I AM the God who is right there beside you, I AM the God right there in the middle of your worst mess. I AM your shield, I AM your very great reward... and I AM the God who will NEVER leave you."

(I especially love what Jesus told the Pharisees, because it obviously shows how God feels about those who believe they are spiritually superior to others.)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

cuz I'm afraid of a lot of things but God has help me overcome those fears and it reminds me that even though I think I'm going crazy/insane its not what God intends for His children to be. He gave us a Sound mind and we have His love and by His power we are able to overcome.
