Praying to the dead

Deut 18:9-12

When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

Leviticus 20:6

If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.

It is forbidden and done. The question is not if they hear us or not. God does absolutely NOT approve, oppodisite. He despises it. And so do I

When the Priest breaks the bread the Priest drinks the wine only. Where is that biblical?

Making rituals for the dead to ''not suffer" and bless them? This is not biblical either (pagan rooted)

''Blessing" dead bodies is pagan as well and Jesus said to us let the dead bury their dead. Yet they claim holy water and all sorts of things will help a dead person.

Holy Water and crucifixes to drive out demons. Thats just a nogo and all roots back to pagans using symbols. Casting out devils with Devils. Pagan roots

They worship Relic which is again Idolatry, which also already shows up with their Saints like Blasius to whom they pray ''set someone else's house on fire" pretty much. Pagan roots

Confessing to a Priest for the forgiveness of sins, as him being ''exalted by God to do so" is unbiblical and a nogo. Confess your faults to one another so ye may be healed, not so you may reveive forgiveness. And that also again has pagan roots

Hi Demi,

I happen to agree that there's not much use in praying FOR dead people.

However, check out

1 Samuel 28:6-20

And what about the transfiguration?

I believe from Luke 16 that the dead cannot hear us.
It's just that I CANNOT BE ABSOLUTELY SURE.

I wouldn't say a denomination is PAGAN for doing this.

Always the ''but he did it" mentality
Like little children learning to steal and lie "but he did it so it must be ok for me"
jeez
Hey Demi.

Don't be so demeaning. It's not nice.

We have a lot to thank the Universal or Catholic Church for.
Unfortunately, it got lost along the way, but after hundreds of years and after doing much good for Christianity.
Let's give credit, where credit is due.

Well we will have to agree to disagree because for me any type of form or attempt to talk to a dead person is not allowed. If it were allowed, we could see them and interact with them daily.
Demi,

The afterlife is a place we know little about.
Your last sentence up above does not make too much sense.

No matter what we believe, we cannot say that Catholics are worshipping spirits or doing anything of the sort.
Again, try reading 1 Samuel 28:6-20.

Can we be absolutely sure about what goes on after Death?
Paul said we die once and then comes the judgement.

What about persons who claim to have died and come back to life?
There's a lot we don't know and I'm not ready to put anybody down for praying FOR dead people.

And i some distraught wife would like to speak to her dead husband at his tomb, which I see all the time BTW, I will not hold this against her.

Post no. 232 is a perfect explanation of the communion of saints. It's a very beautiful image if you think of it.

Every beleiver of God and member of the Kingdom of God, is together in one place in a spiritual realm.

17bees We are not to talk to the dead nor pray to them as we can do nothing for them, but Jesus is the resurrection and the life and so when he spoke to the dead the dry bones came to life. You are not thinking with the mind of Christ in saying he broke his own rules, you are thinking with the mindset the Pharisees had when they condemned Jesus for bringing a person back to life on the sabbath saying he broke the commandment because he was working on the day of rest
Thank you for your advice Blain, but I'm going to pick on you for a minute! But only because your post was a good example of some things. You said "... You are not thinking with the mind of Christ in saying he broke his own rules, " when I never said that Jesus DID break his rules, in fact, quite the contrary. And the rest of your post relies on that your errant information to suggest I am like the Pharisee and so forth. This is good example of not hearing what is said or reading what is written, but rather reading what one wants to read or hearing what one wants to hear. I think this is the petri dish of derision which can grow to slander and reach adulthood in vilification and can serve to separate an otherwise simple brotherhood in Christ.

I think this is a point FranC was trying to make.

No. I don't live near a cemetary.
I live in a fairly small town.
People die.
Those they leave behind grieve.
I know of persons who go to the cemetary EVERY DAY and sit by their dead person's tomb and just sit there and pray and think to the dead person.

When someone has been married a very long time, it's very difficult to live life after the spouse dies.
A softer heart on your part would be nice. A little understanding.

Sometimes the above lasts a few days, sometimes months. Eventually it stops, but we all have our way of grieving.
We are to encourage each other, not demean each other.

What's so Dangerous about it? Am I going to die? There are many Christians with whose doctrine I do not agree and yet I call them my brothers. A DOCTRINE does not a Christian make. JESUS makes a Christian. And who DO YOU say that I am? If one believe Jesus is the Son of God Believes in the Godhead or Trinity Believes he died for their sin and was resurrected what else does one have to believe to suit YOUR needs? Do you think God is YOUR denomination and no one else is getting in??? Please don't worry about me, but consider your own feelings and beliefs.
Those involved in pagan practices i personally wouldn't label them brothers and sisters. However i do love them and hope they come out of that. If catholics are going to a priest for forgiveness and not God directly that's a problem. God gave me a heart to look after others im more concerned about what God will tell catholics on judgement day than myself because i follow the scriptures

I live next to TWO cemeteries. And I NEVER see people just sitting on someone's grave and talking to their loved ones. They put down flowers, maybe clean off the grave and leave. But not once have I seen anyone sit for hours upon hours and just zone out talking to dead loved ones. There are a million ways to grieve, yes. But the bible does say NOT to talk to the dead, doesn't it? As in trying to conjure them up with a ouija board. I can understand someone saying, "mom I miss you" or "daddy I wish you were still here" or "honey I'm so lost without you". I DON'T understand why people believe that their loved ones can hear them. The bible says that the dead know nothing. To me, that translates as, they can't see or hear us anymore.

We could learn something about Catholicism maybe and learn not to hate our brothers in Christ.

You know, just because another deomination doesn't agree with ours, Not Only does it not mean they're pagan (Demi's term)
BUT they might even be right!! Who can know for sure?

It seems to me we don't even agree with the early Church theologians who knew an Apostle, or knew someone who did, so how could WE be so sure we're right??
Hi Fran :)

Well, this isn't a denominational difference at all. It's a gospel difference. Catholicism teaches a different gospel.

Christian denominations (for the most part) agree on salvation, but they just differ on non salvational topics, such as end times, predestination, etc.

Catholicism is not considered to be a christian denomination. It is its own separate religious system, teaching a different gospel, so it's separate from all the christian denominations, because of the unbiblical gospel it teaches.

There can never be unity between two different gospels. Chalk and cheese. But it's the most essential one to have right.

There cannot be true christian unity between one who is born of the Spirit and one who is not. They are not brothers and sisters unless they both have the Spirit.

It sounds like you're promoting unity, regardless of gospel. This is dangerous and deceptive, because it has the appearance of peace. Again, this is a matter of the gospel, not whether someone believes in a rapture or not.

Scripture says that Christ didn't come to bring peace and unity. He came to bring a sword....

Matthew 10:34-39: “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

Luke 12:50-53: "Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

The context of the scriptures above are not of violence. They're actually stating that Christ wants division between the truth and the lie. That a daughter and her mother will be divided because one has the truth and the other doesn't. Those who love the truth will hate the lie (not the person, but the lie), and so by loving the truth, the daughter will not compromise on the truth for the sake of unity with her mother. If the daughter compromises then she is showing she loves her mother more than Christ. Christ should come first. Both the mother and daughter are physically related, but they are not spiritually related, because one has the Spirit and the other does not... so one is in God's family and the other is lost in the world (the scriptures say satan is their father). There is a spiritual warfare going on and there will never be peace and unity between them because they are in different spiritual families, if that makes sense... so there will always be a spiritual battle between them.

Believers are called to be separate.

2 Cor 6:14-18: "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.”

Ephesians 5:8-11: "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them"

You can sugar coat it all you like, but that will not change the fact that Catholicism came out of pagan Babylon. The practices of the catholic church are Babylonian.

I should add that God does still get through to Catholics. There are many testimonies of ex catholics (inc ex priests) who got saved and then came out of that system, because once their eyes were opened to the truth they just could not remain in a system of darkness that does not teach truth. There are several ex catholics on this site that are very familiar with the catholic teachings, so it's not that the catholic teachings are being judged without knowledge.

Exposing a false gospel is a loving thing to do. You are reaching out to that blind person who has no idea they are walking along that broad road that leads to destruction. However, compromise is the worst because it tells them to keep going on their current route to hell :(

This is also for those reading along.
We could learn something about Catholicism maybe and learn not to hate our brothers in Christ.

Hello FranC,

First of all, the institution of Roman Catholicism is not Christian, but a counterfeit. Below is a summary of their beliefs:

1. Mariolatry, which is the worship of Mary. This was a carryover from "queen of heaven" worship and was transposed onto Mary. Then there is "mother and son" worship which also stems from Babylon and was transposed upon Mary and baby Jesus.
Within the RCC Mary is a co-savior, a co-mediator and is to be prayed to.

2. The pantheon of god's that were worshiped in Rome before Constantine deemed Christianity as the official religion, was transposed over to praying to the saints.

3. The institution of the breaking of bread and the drinking of the cup which is a symbolic act performed in remembrance of the Lord body that was broken for believers and the cup is symbolic of the Lord's blood that was shed for us. The RCC changed it to combining them into a Eucharist, where the priest calls Christ down into the Eucharist where transubstantiation takes place, which is the process where the appearance remains the same, but the substance becomes the literal flesh and blood of the Lord. According to the RCC's dogma, anyone who says that this is just symbolic act, then let them be accursed.

4). Then there is Purgatory, which is the teaching that when Catholics die they must spend an unknown amount of time in Purgatory in order to be purified. Yet scripture states that Jesus died once and for all. Those having faith are purified by having faith in His blood that alone cleanses believers. In addition, there is the teaching of indulgences, which for the purchasing of masses, the Catholic liturgy prays for the loved ones in purgatory in order to shorten their time in Purgatory.

5). The salvation of the Bible is not the same salvation taught by the RCC. They believe that baptism cleanses a person of original sin and all of their sins up to that point. Any sin after baptism must be absolved through the priesthood through the works of the sacraments. Yet scripture states that, when we sin, if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

I could go on an on about the differences of the RCC compared to the truth of God's word. Roman Catholicism is the woman who rides the beast. She is Mystery, Babylon the great! She is that city that ruled over the kings of the earth when John was receiving this information from the angel. She is that city that sits on and is famous for her seven hills. She is that woman who is dressed in purple and scarlet, which are the exact colors worn by the cardinals and bishops.

One of her future popes is going to be the one to play the part of the false prophet. When that antichrist is revealed, Roman Catholicism will receive the power that she once had and still longs for. The result will be that everyone will be required to be a Roman Catholic and anyone who rejects this will be an enemy of the RCC with the consequences being persecution and death. And if you don't think that she would do something like that, you might want to look back at the RCC's history and the blood that she shed as a result of the inquisitions.

You need to find out whose side you're on, because the institution of the RCC is a counterfeit church and an enemy of the true church.

I think it's clearly safe to say that everybody has their weird beliefs. A messianic rabbi once said that when the Messiah returns we're all going to find out we had at least one thing wrong. Most of us, more than one.

You're kind of legalistic. Is this what Jesus taught you? I'm really glad YOU won't be the judge come judgement day.

So you follow the scriptures, so you're not concerned about what God will tell you on judgement day? That's interesting.

There are several problems with this:

1. You sound kind of self-righteous because you feel that YOU have the truth and no one else does.

2. You seem to have the ability to know who is your Brother and who isn't. Mathew 7:1.9 would be a good read.

3. How do you know you're right? Maybe we ARE supposed to confess our sins to an authority? Do you realize that Jesus gave the authority to forgive to the Apostles? Maybe that autority has been passed down to priests?

Try reading John 20:22-23
What could Jesus have meant?

Now, I know that only God can forgive. The priest DOES NOT forgive, he only confirms forgiveness. Some people find this very reassuring.

So God gave Jesus the authority to forgive, Jesus passed this on to the Apostles, maybe they passed it on to us?

And anyway, how is this a pagan practice when all they're doing is following the Lord's instructions?

So much to go through.

1. Jesus dd not come to bring peace.
This is talking about the difference between believers and non-believers. There will NOT BE PEACE between those two categories. Non-believers HATE Jesus. He left no choice. You either believe in Him, or you don't want Him around.

2. It's a gospel difference? And not a denominationals difference?
There's a Protestant Church about 5 minutes from my home that teaches you could be SAVED AFTER DEATH.
There's a protestant Church that teaches that if you don't speak in tongues you DON'T HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.
There's a Protestant Church that teaches that if you walk up to an altar once and then cut out, YOU'RE STILL SAVED.
There's a Protestant Church that believes that GOD CHOOSES WHO WILL BE SAVED AND WHO WILL BE LOST. Nice God.

Would you say that THESE are denominational differences or gospel differences?
EVERYTHING could be considered a gospel difference.

3. Because you don't agree with something or other of a denomination does not mean they are wrong. Maybe you are wrong.
Do you know how BIG God is? He created the Whole Universe. Why do we want to put Him in a box all the time??

4. If the topics are NON-SALVATIONAL, what do you care what they do?
And if they're non-salvational, WHY do you say in your last sentence that they're going to HELL?
make up your mind.

Also, why don't you go speak to some Calvanists? They believe MUCH WORSE things than Catholics might.
They change the CHARACTER OF GOD. Maybe you could go help them out a little bit???

You say Catholicism is not considered a Christian denomination.
WHO made this determination?
What authority do THEY have?
What are they anyway? Jewish, Muslim?

Do you realize that the Catholic Church was the first Church? Does this mean anything to you?
Do you realize that if it wasn't for the Catholic Church there would be NO CHRISTIANITY?
And we'd all be speaking Arabic. Have you heard of the crusades? Who do you think won back our faith? Prostestants?

5. Yes. I'm promoting unity between CHRISTIAN brothers and sisters. Since those cutting our heads off call us the cross wearers, they don't care if we're Catholic or Protestant. They hate Jesus and they hate us. So it seems to me to be a good idea to stick together in these times.

6. The devil causes division. He's good at it. He does this in families too. It's a great method to get us focusing on stuff that isn't important.

7. Think about this. Let's say you have a sickly mother who is a non-believer. And she hates to hear about Jesus. Would you leave her because of your statements up above, or would you take care of her? So do you think Jesus really meant for us to leave those we love?

8. If we separate ourselves from the world, how will we ever witness? How do we give good testimony re our faith?

9. Catholicsim came out of babylonia. Are you getting mixed up with the Jews? Check it out.

10. Last but not least... Did you know that many Protestants convert to Catholicism? The biggest reason? They're tired of all the bickering, all the debates over scripture as if we were all little theologians. So they leave where there is more unity and end up happy about it.

So, yes, I plan on supporting my Catholic brothers and sisters.

People are just dying to get in there... you know how many dead people are in each cemetary? ALL of them!

I guess you didn't read the book of Macabees.
That's because it's not inspired by God... it's not His Word.

Nice God.
No need to blame God for those that are ignorant of God's Word.

Do you realize that the Catholic Church was the first Church? Does this mean anything to you?
It's meaningless since they began whoring after other gods, rejecting the Word of God.

Do you realize that if it wasn't for the Catholic Church there would be NO CHRISTIANITY?
Are you claiming accusing Jesus is weak and inept, unable to carry on when people fall away?

He ALWAYS has others so don't kid yerself... Jesus has nothing to do with false religions that try to get to God some other way other then thru Himself.

Have you heard of the crusades?
Yes, where those who were NOT being led by Jesus Christ murdered protestants and jews for refusing to agree with false catholik doctrine that is not biblical.

I've heard of that ridiculous time in history that still today people blame of Christians when it wasn't Christians at all, it was catholiks!

Yes. I'm promoting unity between CHRISTIAN brothers and sisters. Since those cutting our heads off call us the cross wearers, they don't care if we're Catholic or Protestant. They hate Jesus and they hate us.
Is this why your pope is becoming more and more in agreement with islam every day?

Your pope, who is meaningless to those that actually follow Jesus Christ, claims that ALL major religions lead to the same God which is false.

Your pope is prime candidate for false prophet, congrats!

Did you know that many Protestants convert to Catholicism?
And they won't be spending eternity with Jesus.

You'll see unless you repent and turn from your false jesus and his momma unto the true Jesus

Nothing personal, I'm sure you are otherwise a nice person... somebody needs to let you know you are mixed up in a false religion that claims to be the one true religion... this is some of satan's finest deception leading people into that which is false while making them believe they are serving the true God.

People are just dying to get in there... you know how many dead people are in each cemetary? ALL of them!

That's because it's not inspired by God... it's not His Word.

No need to blame God for those that are ignorant of God's Word.

I've never seen such projected fear....
Warning others that stand up for un-godly teaching... is fear?

It doesn't effect me one way or another since God forbids the unbelief of others from making the faith of God of no effect (Romans 3:3,4)... I have no fear of others following false teaching. In the end I cast my cares upon the Lord so I don't care what they do!

We are called to reprove or correct the works of darkness... whad'dya got jelly for brains er somethin?

Yeah, apparently it was your head that got bruised

PrynceNY You're kind of legalistic. Is this what Jesus taught you? I'm really glad YOU won't be the judge come judgement day. So you follow the scriptures, so you're not concerned about what God will tell you on judgement day? That's interesting. There are several problems with this: 1. Try reading John 20:22-23 What could Jesus have meant? Now, I know that only God can forgive. The priest DOES NOT forgive, he only confirms forgiveness. Some people find this very reassuring. So God gave Jesus the authority to forgive, Jesus passed this on to the Apostles, maybe they passed it on to us? And anyway, how is this a pagan practice when all they're doing is following the Lord's instructions?
Everyone has access to the truth even catholics yet they choose to do practices that Jesus nor his disciples told us to. Meanwhile you say regardless what a person practices as long as they say they love Jesus you have no problem with it. There is only one meditator between us and the father and that's Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). Not any priest or pope. There is only one "father" and he's in heaven not some random catholic priest. No priest has to "confirm" your forgiveness that's more catholic false doctrine. It's unfortunate false doctrine "reassures" people. Anything you ask in Jesus name will be given to you. Jesus is the only one who should "reassure" people

Actually, if one follows catholik teaching... they won't go to Heaven t all and will instead go to hell.
You're a good Christian Rockz.
Insulting other Christians and sending them to hell.
Yeah. This is EXACTLY what Jesus taught.
Have you read the New Testament?

Yeah. Stop listening to music and try reading. It might be a good idea..
Try reading Mathew 7:1-5
I do believe it was written for you.
