Obviously (at your age) I have no idea how you're getting them, but that's another subject. Since you have only been smoking a couple of years, think of it this way; as difficult as it may be to quit now, it'll be exponentially more difficult to quit in twenty or thirty years. I started smoking when I was younger than you are and now (I can just about guarantee that I'm older than your dad) it's a nightmare to quit. I've had a lot of success using nicotine lozenges to cut the cravings but at your age you can't buy them any more legally than you are acquiring cigarettes.

How are you legally able to buy cigarettes, since you're only 14? The legal age to buy them is 21.

I remember when I was in grammar school, our class was shown a film about smoking. Pictures were shown of the lungs of two young men in their mid-twenties who had died. The non-smoker's lungs were light colored, perhaps somewhat pink. The smoker's lungs were black. I have never forgotten those two pictures. I don't smoke.

A pack of cigarettes costs what, $10? A smoker smokes two packs a day costing $7300 a year. Over 10 years he spends $73,000. That would be a nice down payment on a house! Enough said! Where is the advantage of smoking??

Yeah I guess its better to stop before it gets really bad when Im older. I might be able to buy nicotine lozenges online using my mums card (with her permission to use it btw). Ill have to look into it

I know. Every since I was little I was told how bad smoking is yet when I was first offered a cig I still said yes and it did feel pretty good and relaxing so I kept with it. I even started working jobs so I wouldnt be spending all of my mums money on it. If Im going to be working so hard to get money I would much prefer that at the end of it I can buy something really cool like to buy my first car.

Try again. Tobacco is 18, alcohol is 21. Of course it doesn't change the legality of his possessing them.

Herr's how I quit about 2 yrs ago. First, I decided I REALLY wanted to. I was startled to see so many beloved celebrities who were taken bc of cigs let alone many mommies and daddies who won't b there for their families. I also took a peek at pics online of people with cancer but I couldn't take it too long. Second, I sincerely asked God to HELP me do this and that I really needed His help. Third, I started to stop buying cigs so would pick up long buts (I know yuk) and smoke them One was kinda torn up but I was desperate and wound up with tobacco in my mouth (dbl yuk). It made me so sick that afterwards I couldn't stand the thought of tobacco. I had a few cravings after but not that many. So, if you're SERIOUS, try taking the tobacco and eating it...I might have discovered the cure...lol...I wish. May God help you w/this, in Jesus' name, Amen.

I fell back after quitting a half year. I havent smoked anything with nicotine for almost a month.
Keep praying to stop and keep urself busy.
The habit is the hardest part.
I was able to go to nicotine free vaping now. Chocolate helps too. Try to keep yourself busy.

Hey James,

Welcome to CC...

When I saw your post about smoking I knew by instinct you were from the UK...Just to make sure I went to your profile and saw that you were from the UK...

Guess what? Fellow brit here too!!!! That's like totally awesome...

Anyway, most of the kids I know around your age smoke cigarettes big time. I know a girl who is just 13 who was introduced to smoking by her older friends. Everyone I know seems to have smoked or are smoking....

It's a trend going everywhere...may I ask.....how did you start smoking? Was it peer pressure? Also, if you need any advice be free to pm me (if you can).

I grew up in Michigan where the legal age to purchase cigarettes was 18. Living in the Detroit area I remember buying them at 12 as the stores didn't really care about your age or what you were buying. Bought some alcohol too on many occasions.

My aunt smoked from her late teens to 60 when she managed to stop.

She is now 83 with end stage COPD.

Basically smoking damages your lungs only it’s not always noticeable at the time.
But as you get older your lungs don’t expand and aren’t as flexible, it’s then that any
smoking related damage starts to become evident.

In my aunt’s case the small avoli in her lungs have partially collapsed so she can no longer
absorb all the oxygen she needs. She also cannot expell the CO2 properly and tends to
retain it.

Why am I telling you this? Because smoking isn’t just about lung cancer, there are
other awful illnesss waiting to creep up on you too, but people don’t realise until the
damage has been done and it’s too late to reverse it.

My aunt is now on oxygen 24/7. Everything she does, eating, sleeping, going to the
bathroom etc she is attached to a plastic nasal tube up her nose supplying her with
oxygen 24/7.

The lack of oxygen and CO2 retention has also caused her to have mini strokes and
damaged her heart. That’s because her heart has to work harder to get what oxygen there
is, around her body. She also now has vascular dementia due to damage to the brain
starved of oxygen.

Her kidneys don’t work properly as the lack of oxygen affects other organs too.

In her old age when she should be enjoying life, instead she is on dozens of
tablets every day. She gets tired easily and sleeps a lot, we are constantly
having to monitor her oxygen sats every day.

Just before midnight a week ago, I was woken up by a beeping noise.
turned out we had a power cut affecting 1000 homes. Only problem is the
oxygen machine runs on electricity. So I had to rush downstairs, drag out the
back up oxygen cylinder and swap my aunt to that.

I had to light a couple of candles but because the oxygen is highly flammable I
had to keep them well away from her and the oxygen and sit up with her until the
electric came back on two hours later, we’ve had many oxygen issues over the
last few years.

It’s no way to live and definitely not how you would want to live out your old
age.

If ever you want a reason to stop smoking go to your local hospital and visit the
Respiritory ward. I’ve been there more times than I care to remember when my
aunt has been ill. You will see people with all manner of problems, many of them
smoking related.

Last time I was there with my aunt, there was a woman in the next bed who had
lung cancer. They told it it was back for the second time and there was not much they
could do for her.

There is a guy at work diagnosed with lung cancer last year, they’ve given him
treatment and it was in remission but it’s just starting to return again.

Smoking related illnesses are no way to end your life. Exhausted, breathless,
unable to fights coughs and colds. Simple colds land my aunt back in hospital.

Do yourself a massive favour and do everything in your power to stop.
It will be hard, but believe me, it’s nothing compared to gasping and fighting
for every breathe you take in the future.

Me and my mates would sometimes skip class and go to the fields behind our school and we hung out with the sixth formers who would go there to smoke so we just kind of ended up joining in. I guess that is peer pressure.

I smoked for years and tried many times to quit. I got a job at a restaurant that opened up. One man almost hacked (violently coughed) himself to death daily. One weekend I decided to quit. When I went back to work, seven other cooks had also made the decision. We all gained 30 lbs, except the two who used meds to quit. They started smoking again. Instead of waking up and having a coffee and a smoke, I went for a jog. I didn’t drink any beer for a few months to avoid withdrawals. I skipped breaks at work for weeks to avoid friends in the smoking break room. Basically I reinvented myself. Instead of Steve the smoker, I became Steve the athlete.

Huh thats really interesting. How did you decide that you wanted to be an athlete? I would try to reinvent myself but I have no idea who I want to be

Well theres people who can legally buy them who give/sell them to us. Its surprisingly easy to get them
Which is still illegal, both for that person and you. If those people are caught they can face legal consequences. Same goes for you for possessing them at all. Not to mention the morally corrupt nature of such a person willing to aid in what is essentially suicide of a minor.
