I concede that it might be ONE of the reasons that God forbade the consumption of pork. But it is just us guessing about that because we know they stink and eat slop and carry worms. I can concede that there were benefits to not having them in the train of desert wanderers or in your neighborhood. But this same theory does not hold true to every unclean animal on the list.
Maybe pigs were not allowed simply for the same reason as other animals, because the nations around them were sacrificing them to their false idols and he wanted them to make a statement of separation.
Burying their refuse and washing their pots and pans was certainly sanitary instructions and I concede that there might be some of that in the dietary list but I do think it was mostly about being separate because we have that statement in the text, but no statements about nutrition or health and because they don't all pan out in a lab analysis as superior in health to the unclean list.
Today one would do will to eat Rabbit for protein and nutrition over Lamb. It would be a better health choice. And allowed by God since the New Testament specifically declares all meats clean.
Today I carry out the principle of being separate by following the Spirit and not indulging in the sinful practices of the world around me. So the lesson behind it is a theological one. This seems to be more inline with the rest of the bible.
I am not trying to be contrary but helpful in seeing what the message of the dietary laws might have been.
