Tagalog for the Linguistically Challenged

Looking at a Tagalog (Filipino) version of the Bible of Matthew 10:25 Alagad the word for "follower" is used...

Sukat na sa alagad ang maging katulad ng kaniyang guro, at sa alila ang maging katulad ng kaniyang panginoon. Kung pinanganlan nilang Beelzebub ang panginoon ng sangbahayan, gaano pa kaya ang mga kasangbahay niya!

It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub,[a] how much more will they call those of his household!

Disipulo, disciple, alagad, follower, servant.... are ( synonyms) and depends how u gonna used the word in a sentence in tagalog version..

when we were taught to speak the English language my trainer told us never to translate directly from tagalog to english. And i believe that goes the other way around. the thought would count most of the time.... translating per word and learning them would be a good start. however, when you are to speak a thought the difference will come out.....hmmmm......

like for instance KUMAIN KA NA BA? translating directly wouod be
ate you already

well in fact it should be
Have you already eaten?
a typical filipino would say
Have you eaten already? (filipinoism)......


Mahal could be expensive but
mahal in other forms could be INIIBIG

say 20000 then i would say..Ang mahal!! which means expensive!

I'm still learning tagalog and cebuano - mga salita na hindi ginagamit sa pang araw araw na pakikipagtalastasan.

Kung dili man gud nimo tun-an ug gamiton, dili ka mahanas. Naay mga pinulongan nga wala pa nabal-an kay dili man gud kaayo ginagamit sa adlaw adlaw nga pakig storya sa mga tawo.

I think this thread is just for me. I am from the US but I am currently living in Kuwait. I attend an international church but the congregation here is a little different. There is one other American, and Indian family and everyone one else is Filipino.

All I know is "mahal ko kayo!"
