so correct me if im wrong, when a christian dies, his soul goes straight to heaven?and when an unbeleiver dies his soul goes straight to hell?
years ago i went to this presbytherian church and they taught that the soul of beleiver goes to this place..i forgot what they called it but it wasnt heaven and the soul of unbeleiver goes to another place..so all beleivers souls togheter in one place and unbeleivers souls togheter in a nother place waiting for judgement day to be re united with their body and than cast into heaven or hell
soo all this is not true?
Lemme take a stab at it...
Was it Sheol?
Yeah, a lot of bible translations/version translate the following words into "hell": gehenna, abyss, lake of fire, Hades, Sheol.
And likewise for Heaven (third Heaven, Kingdom of God, the City of God, not sky or 2nd heaven etc.) but not as often as hell: Abraham's bosom and Paradise.
Both Abraham's Bosom and Paradise were in Sheol. Prior to Jesus resurrection no one went to "Heaven", the Kingdom, save maybe Enoch and Elijah but hereto there's debate.
Various denominations all have their takes on what the words mean/are but it's really not as confusing as it sounds.
Some sects of Judaism have/had a kind of purgatory-esque view of the after-life. Anywoot, if you want you can check out some of the background on these words/places below, by clicking on the words (don't worry, you won't be whisked away to an Orthodox site but instead to the Jewish encyclopedia site.
SHEOL (Hades is synonymous with Sheol so Jesus must have been speaking Greek)
ABADDON (worth taking a look at in regards to Sheol)
GEHENNA
PURGATORY (yes, this is in the Jewish encyclopedia)
ABRAHAM'S BOSOM
KADDISH
ABYSS
God bless
