I am all about modesty. With that said I have a request for the guys: Show us girls the same respect and consideration. Studies show that 27% of women have the same type of brain activity as men when visually stimulated. Which means you (men) are a visual stumbling block for women. And you don't know which woman is part of that 27%. So be conscious and cover up. Why can't you wear a shirt when you go swimming? Do you really need to show off your six pack abs and have your swim shorts hanging off your hips? Don't be a peacock! :p

Yay for my out clause in my post . :p

Before i go any further, I'm not saying men are pure on this issue as women are evil. I'm just writing this to address some concerns I have as a guy who's trying to follow Jesus.

Easy. Everywhere. The secret: LAYER

I have over a dozen shirts called "safety shirts". They're any shirt that you wear underneath that covers you up and tucks into your pants or skirt. I use tanks, camis, and t-shirts.

You can wear ANY shirt or dress with a well-covering, cute safety shirt.

And here's a side note, and I know the men will agree..

Showing just a little skin in the back when you bend over is no different than letting the front all hang out.

I didn't know this until Master's Commission where we HAD to wear safety shirts tucked in 24/7. The guys too. So ladies (and guys PLEASE).. cover up the back side. No crack and no back!

I have to say I myself am very modest. No I do not wear mt clothes all down to my ankles and sleves down to my wrist. But I refuse to go outside my house with a tank top on and I will not wear a low cut top without something underneath it. I feel my body is not there for a show. Oh sure I get laughed at.. But I have my standards and I believe God intended us woman to be modest our bodies are not to be put on show. That is something that should be kept for your husband only.
Chris thanks for posting this. I see too many ladies showing way too much skin.

so showing the bottom of your back when you bend over is disrespecting yourself?

If you worked in my office you would be asked to go home and find a longer top to wear. If it happens 3 times you get fired. So if it is wrong for the work place that is far from christian. The thing is something like that might just get the wrong guys attention. We as women cannot expect to be able to show off our bodies and then blame the guy for getting the wrong ideas. I know men have to have control but us woman also need to becareful the we do not tempt them as well. Shutting up now I am rambling..

I agree with you 100% Raeshelle!!
I wonder, are there any game men out there who will speak candidly in this thread to their 'sisters' about what are the visual 'triggers' for guys? I mean, when two guys came to the girls group I led, one of the guys spoke of how he finds it hard when a girls bra strap is showing....I mean, for young girls to understand, it may take a bit of transparency on the guys part to say - look, this is acceptable, but please refrain from this....
Just an idea!

well, that will b a problem with layering because I feel confined,i hate turtlenecks,or i can't wear t-shirts without cutting a V in the front, but its not a low V.the less clothing I wear the more comfortable i am.I even love to go barefoot lol if I can walk around nude,i'd would, like before Adam n Eve sinned.but I do realize it's not probable,I even hate the wintertime, because I have to wear more clothing.please pray for me
God bless

honestly, wear what you want
as long as you respect yourself in what you wear others will respect you
it's all how you carry yourself.
as long as you don't walk around expecting negative physical and sexual attention i don't see the problem
we can't always cover up every inch of our bodies and to me there are more important aspects to being a christian (like your relationship with GOD) than worry if you're showing an inch of your back. if people are going to assume things about you based on how much of your back shows when you bend over they're being judgemental when they should be worrying about their own salvation. i'm in no way saying take this to the next level, but in my opinion to worry about your back showing is taking it to a whole other level. God bless.

Modesty is one thing, but I don't expect a girl to wear a burqa or something. Ladies, use your discretion, that's all I've got to say. I think some of you might be being a bit too reactionary.... Although we should all be presentable in church.

but it's not just ourselves we need to be concerned about. men are naturally more visible and if they see a little skin, their mind takes it further than just what is shown. it may not sound right, but it's true. and yes, you should carry yourself with confidence, but there are women who are very confident and showing waaaay too much skin. what we're talking about is trying to care about your brothers in Christ. trying to do what you can to not make them stumble. i once had a boyfriend who told me the tank top/cami's I wore under my v-neck shirts were a blessing. we are tempting our brothers to sin when we show our skin in the torso area. i don't know about you ladies, but i certainly don't want to be to blame for tempting my brothers -- especially because i didn't think it was a big deal. guys are visual, girls are more emotional. a girl wearing a short shirt is no different than a guy talking for hours onthe phone with a girl getting her emotions all stirred up. it's the same thing. let's respect and honor our brothers and sisters in Christ. help each other out. :)

Narn is an expert on sites that sell women's clothing? Just kidding! :) Guys who like to shop are great!

I personally like Eddie Bauer, J. Crew, and L.L. Bean--very laid-back and casual... and yes, for any of you ladies who have a hard time finding clothes that aren't too short or show too much skin, the layering idea is great--both underneath (tank tops and t-shirts as some others here have suggested) and also over (such as with a cardigan or blazer if you need a dressier look at work, and you can find some good ones at the stores I'm mentioning in this post.) These stores have websites as well if you don't have a location near you--just look them up on Google.

Other good online resources (which are also reasonably priced) include Newport News and Chadwick's of Boston. Some even have specialty sections for tall, petite, etc.

Hope this helps!

P.S.--No, I'm not a shopping fanatic--I can just see some poor guy starting another thread: "From a Man to a Woman--Please Don't Spend All Our Money On Your Wardrobe" :). I mostly just like to window-shop... and I have a few friends who are pretty much professionals and pass along their tips.

Well the way I see it is God see us outside the church as well as inside.. So if I can't wear it to church I shouldn't wear it all.

Hmm I'm starting to sense a hint of legalism coming up in these replies.

I don't think we need a detailed laundry list of what you can and can't wear.

The main idea is to cover what needs covering, don't wear something too tight, and be 'reasonably' mindful of making your siblings in Christs stumble.
