"Many will be confronted by the spirits of devils personating beloved relatives or friends and declaring the most dangerous heresies. These visitants will appeal to our tenderest sympathies and will work miracles to sustain their pretensions. We must be prepared to withstand them with the Bible truth that the dead know not anything and that they who thus appear are the spirits of devils... The Apostles, as personated by these lying spirits, are made to contradict what they wrote at the dictation of the Holy Spirit when on earth." Great Controversy, 560,557.

We have the plainest warning that through the teaching of the immortality of the soul, the spirits of devils will make fire come down from heaven, which is to make it appear that the Holy Spirit has been poured out. With equal clarity we have been warned that the spirits of devils have power to do miracles in the sight of men. Therefore we know that it is not safe to accept every appearance of the "Holy Spirit" and every miracle as a witness of the presence of the power of God. More likely it is the counterfeit abroad in its work of deception.

That this is not the work of the Spirit of God is evident from the fact that these people have rejected the message of truth for this time. They are of those who, having rejected the messages of God sent to the churches in the 1844 period, have fallen lower and lower and further and further into the grip of spiritualism.

All these things are very well imagined but so not true. You see the mark of the beast was the fleurdelis it is our nations symbol for the boy scouts. And here is why: it was used as a merchants màrk or what we today call a trademark. Revelation 13:18 means this; the fleurdelis was once the national symbol for France. And it was also the cadency mark of the sixth son in French and English heraldry. In 1376 king Charles the wise reduced the number of fleurdelis on the French flag and coat of arm to three in honor of the Holy Trinity and being the mark of the sixth son each one represented 6. Which is why the 666 was the number of a man. Charles a Christian name means a man or fellow by definition. But he was not the beast Cardinal Richeleu was he. The king behind the king as prime minister of France.

Part 35 (LAST DAY EVENTS)

"The line of distinction between professed Christians and the ungodly is now hardly distinguishable. Church members love what the world loves, and are ready to join with them; and Satan determines to unite them in one body, and thus strengthens his cause by sweeping all into the ranks of SPIRITUALSIM. Catholics, who boast of miracles as a certain sign of the true church, will be readily deceived by this miracle working power; and Protestants, having cast away the shield of truth, will also be deceived. Catholics, Protestants and worldlings, will alike accept the form of godliness without the power and they will see in this union a grand movement for the conversion of the world and the ushering in of the long expected millinium." Great Controversy,588-589.

But the true people of God will not be deceived. They will know that the work of these forces will be upholding error and not truth. But when Jesus at last appears in the clouds of heaven, then the true children of God will say, "Lo, this is our God. We have waited for Him. We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation." Isaiah 25:9.

There is yet another means that the Devil uses in his efforts to bring all the people into subjection to himself and that is the instrument of CALAMITY and TROUBLE. While on the one hand through spiritualism he heals the people and thus appears as the benefactor of the race, on the other hand he works in his true role of destroyer.

This leaves the door open for Satan to work his will. He will not treat all the same as it will best suit his purpose.

"Satan has control of all whom God does not especially guard. He will FAVOR and PROSPER SOME, in order to further his own designs; and he will BRING TROUBLE UPON OTHERS, and lead men to believe that it is God who is afflicting them." Ibid, p.589.

"While appearing to the children of men as the great physician who can heal all their maladies, he will bring disease and disaster until populous cities are reduced to ruin and to destruction. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hail-storms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast.'The earth mourneth and fadeth away. The haughty people do languish. The earth is defiled under the inhabitants thereof, because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinances, broken the everlasting covenant." Isa.24:4,5; G.C.590.'

It is Satan's constant effort to make it appear that these calamities and disasters are visited upon the earth by the direct decree of God.

Part 36 of THE ORDER OF LAST DAY EVENTS

"And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils." Great Controversy, 590.

This is the very opposite of the truth. It is just as much the opposite of the truth as the charge to be made that the desecration of Sunday will be the cause of the wide-spread wickedness and immorality in the world.

Bu it will be believed and the natural reaction will be to war against those who stand for the truth as it is in Jesus. This will be but to throw off still further the protection of God and to open the door for Satan to bring more trouble on the one hand and on the other to lead to still greater wickedness in the land, which will lead to still greater pressure for the Sunday Law and so on in an ever steepening spiral to the one possible end, THE SETTING UP OF THE IMAGE OF THE BEAST.

Thus it is that all these diabolical forces are working toward this end. The mighty power of spiritualism masquerading as true religion will be the great motivating and unifying force in the movement. And it will succeed to a point and for a short period of time. Of this we will learn more as we proceed in this study.

Part 37 (Last Day Events)

Of course the devil will spare no effort or expense to make the issue as clouded as possible but despite that, the power attending the message will clarify every issue so that no one will have any excuse. "The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently." p.605.

For a period of time unknown to us at this moment and nowhere revealed in the prophetic Word, the battle will rage on until at last the people of God are brought to THE GREAT FINAL TEST which, as we have learned previously comes "at the close of human probation" (Christ's Object Lessons, 412) and not after the close of probation for there will still be time to change sides as we have already seen from Testimonies to Ministers,473.

Then, as the next following statement clearly shows, the one class will have received the mark of the beast while the other class will receive the final seal.

"The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth especially controverted. When the FINAL TEST shall be brought upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not. While the observance of the false sabbath in compliance with the law of the state, contrary to the fourth commandment, will be an avowal of allegiance to a power that is in opposition to God, the keeping of the true Sabbath, in obedience to God's law, is an evidence of loyalty to the Creator. While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive the mark of the beast, the other, choosing the token of allegiance to the divine authority, receive the seal of God." The Great Controversy,605.

It is on the bottom of page 605 of The Great Controversy that there begins such a step by step description of the events of the loud cry as is matched nowhere else in the inspired word. The first words take us right back to a point leading immediately to the beginning of the loud cry, and then moves right on step by step to the very end of it. We shall quote these words, pausing every here and then to draw our attention to the significance of the information given.

"Heretofore those who presented the truths of the third angel's message have often been regarded as MERE ALARMISTS. Their predictions that RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE would gain control in the United States, that church and state would unite to persecute those who keep the commandments of God, have been pronounced GROUNDLESS and ABSURD. It has been confidently declared that this land could NEVER become other than what it has been: THE DEFENDER OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. But as the question of enforcing Sunday observance is widely agitated, the event SO LONG DOUBTED and DISBELIEVED is seen to be approaching and the third message will produce an EFFECT which it COULD NOT have had before."

This paragraph then speaks of the things to happen just before the loud cry begins. On the part of the vast majority there has been complete disbelief in the possibility of free America ever imposing pressure and persecution on any who would not observe an ordinance of the church, but there comes the time when the event is seen to be approaching and then the third angel's message will grow in power and influence until it is joined by the angel of Revelation 18 at which point the loud cry proper begins.

Part 38 (Last Day Events)

This passing of the Sunday Law, marking it as it does the full and final fall of Babylon The Great so that her sins reach clear up to Heaven (Rev.18:5), brings the world to the greatest point of crisis in its history for which the Lord is not left without an answer. His answer is the fullest outpouring of His power upon men and women of His own choosing, just as in the past His Spirit has come upon faithful souls to meet the crisis of the past.

Thus we read on from page 606 of The Great Controversy:

"In every generation God has sent His servants to rebuke sin, both in the world and in the church. But the people desire smooth things spoken to them, and the pure, unvarnished truth is not acceptable. Many reformers, in entering upon their work, determined to exercise great prudence in attacking the sins of the church and the nation. They hoped, by the example of a pure Christian life, to lead the people back to the doctrines of the Bible. But the Spirit of God came upon them as it came upon Elijah, moving him to rebuke the sins of a wicked king and an apostate people; they could not refrain from preaching the plain utterances of the Bible--doctrines which they had been reluctant to present. They were impelled to zealously declare the truth and the danger which threatened souls. The words which the Lord gave them they uttered, fearless of consequences, and the people were compelled to hear the warning."

Thus it has always been in the past and it will be no different in the beginning of the loud cry. A fearful crisis will have arisen, the result of which will be that the whole world would be plunged into the most fearful pit of total destruction, into which the Lord will not let them plunge without ONE FINAL WARNING. Therefore, He sends His mighty Spirit in a flood tide of latter rain power upon His faithful, praying ones.

"Thus the message of the third angel will be proclaimed. As the time comes for it to be given with greatest power, the Lord will work through humble instruments, leading the minds of those who consecrate themselves to His service. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of His Spirit than by the training of literary institutions. Men of faith and prayer will be constrained to go forth with holy zeal, declaring the words which God gives them. The sins of Babylon will be laid open. The fearful results of enforcing the observances of the church by civil authority, the inroads of spiritualism, the stealthy but rapid progress of the papal power--all will be unmasked. By these solemn warnings the people will be stirred. Thousands upon thousands will listen who have never heard words like these. In amazement they hear the testimony that Babylon is the church, fallen because of her errors and sins, because of her rejection of the truth sent to her from heaven." G.C.606,607.

Part 39 (Last Day Events)

The Loud Cry Develops

We are still studying the paragraph on page 606 of The Great Controversy, which as has already been shown, describes the opening events of the loud cry. Before reading further into this paragraph, there is a further point to be noticed and kept in mind as we proceed. It is that each of the events is dependent on the one before it, taking place before it can transpire. A quick revision of the opening events so far declared to us in this paragraph will show the truth of this.

First of all, the time comes for the message to be given with GREATEST POWER. That time having come and not before, the Lord begins to work through humble instruments qualifying them with the outpouring of His Spirit. The direct result of this which would be quite impossible otherwise, is that they are CONSTRAINED to go forth and declare the words of warning which the Lord will give them.

Thus empowered and directed they are able and do lay open the sins of Babylon with the next direct result that thousands upon thousands will listen who have never heard words like these. In amazement they hear that Babylon the Great is the fallen churches because of the rejection of the light and truth of Heaven. Thus matters have really begun to develop, and our interest naturally centres upon what is to happen next. Of this we are left in no doubt as we read directly on.

"As the people go to their former teachers with the eager inquiry, Are these things so? the ministers present fables, prophesy smooth things, to soothe their fears, and quiet the awakened conscience. But since many refuse to be satisfied with the mere authority of men and demand a plain 'Thus saith the Lord,' the popular ministry, like the Pharisees of old, filled with anger as their authority is questioned, will denounce the message as of Satan, and stir up the sin-loving multitudes to revile and persecute those who proclaim it." Page 607.

Again notice that each of the events in their succession in this paragraph, is the natural and inevitable consequence of the one before it. It is a development of the earlier one as the conflict moves into the heat of that terrible battle.

Part 40 (Last Day Events)

But observe too just what are the first measures which are to be adopted against the bearers of the message. Will it be bitter persecution, or the threat of death? At this stage it will not be anything drastic, for the leaders of the apostate churches do not put much account to the tiny remnant of the faithful. At that time the people of God will not be a great host. The Laodicean message is to effect a great shaking in the Advent Church before the Loud Cry begins as is plainly shown in Early Writings 269-271.

History has always shown that only a tiny minority come out on the right side of these tests by which the church is skaken, and so it will be again. In referring to the people of God at the time when the conflict opens, the Spirit of Prophecy speaks of them as "the LITTLE COMPANY who are standing in the light," and as "this FAITHFUL FEW." Testimonies, Vol.5, 209,210.

When the Sunday Law is first passed it is not directed primarily to the people of God for they will be so small a minority, having absolutely neither voice nor influence in the affairs of men, that the churches will regard them as not even worth any consideration the one way or the other.

The Sunday Law will be brought in because the churches, having lost all the power of God because of their rejection of the truth sent to them from Heaven, have been powerless to stem the tide of evil which has swept over the world.

Seeing their own loss of face and fearing their own destruction as a result of reactionary forces caused by their own failure, they turn to the other source of power, the power of the state, to save themselves and the world from destruction.

This will be their motive, and the people of God will not even enter into their thinking in the whole matter, the situation finding a parallel in the experience of the Pharisees who thought that once they had put Christ to death, they had no more worries, so little account did they put by the church of Christ in that day. But how soon they were to learn that the Apostles were a mighty power to be reckoned with as reflected in their despairing and angry cry, "Ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrines." Acts 5:28.
