Bearing false witness is misrepresenting the truth about something. Sounds like you were openly speculating that something was happening. Doesn't sound like bearing false witness to me.

Your husband seems to be looking out for your best interest.its always dangerous to speculate about something you are not 100% sure about.Thats how rumors get started and this can cause people a lot of pain and misfortune. Its also gossip and I think many of us are guilty of both.May God help us all to be sensitive when it comes to situations like this because even if we find someone living in sin I don't think Jesus would want our first reaction to be to gossip about it.we should rather continue to love that person and pray for God to give us a loving corrective word that can bring them back to the narrow way.i learned this lesson the hard way with a lot of chastisement from the father and i thank him for it now.

I don't know if you were bearing false witness (not telling the truth), but you were certainly gossiping. Also a no-no.

Possible thread hijacking here:

I once had an epiphany concerning Exodus 20:16. Somebody (Sarah Palin maybe?) was asked a question along the lines of "If you were hiding Anne Frank and the Gestapo came knocking on the door looking for her, would you 'bear false witness' or give her up?" If I remember right, the person who was asked the question said that they would have given her up so as not to "bear false witness". It was a "gotcha" question, and they "got 'em". It got me to thinking about the verse in question. It explicitly says "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." Put yourself in that scenario: An innocent person's life is on the line based on whether or not you lie about their whereabouts. Extreme scenario, yes, but my point is that I don't believe the Lord would have us deliver an innocent person into peril for the sake of not lying to those who would harm them. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I think in certain scenarios it might be right to bear false witness for thy neighbor.

You're not only someone's wife, you're also someone's sister. Before your husband can accuse you of baring false witness, he has to admit to and deal with his own fault of eavesdropping. You should always look out for your sister.

Matthew 19:5and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?

Matthew 12:25
Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

2 Corinthians 10:6
And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

2 John 1:6
And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Ephesians 5 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Colossians 3:19
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

Lying... When a person that is speaking about something that is not the truth, is spreading false reports to others.
The most damnable lie one can tell is the truth when it leads someone to believe something that is false. Anytime the truth is misrepresented, it is bearing false witness, here is an example...

Ever pay any attention to a political campaign? "Under the presidency of Joe Smith, the nation lost a million jobs." Sounds terrible does it not? What isn't said is that those were minimum wage, part time jobs replaced by a net gain of two million, full time, high paying manufacturing jobs.

Yes, it is true that the nation lost one million jobs but the conclusion one reaches from such a statement is false. This is a terrible misrepresentation of the real truth. It is also LYING plain and simple.

If your sister is involved or potentially involved romantically with the person you were talking about, and you are possibly protecting her, maybe not.

But if she is not subject to any problem because of the alleged actions, then it is in fact exactly what bearing false witness is because #1, you were not there and #2, the alleged victim is not present to defend their self or confess.

Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

many times we witness someone falling or hear someone has fallen into a temptation.. Their "account" is between them and God.. The question i ask myself "first" when i hear or witness such things is .. does me speaking about it to another person please God or is it more pleasing to God to talk to Him about it? i always come to the conclusion "when i remember to put God first" it is more pleasing to God to talk to Him about it. this keeps us out of the way of many temptations.

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

God is the narrow gate wich leads to life.

We are to use judgment, and the law of love is to be the guide. Christ explained this when he told us about obeying to honor the Sabbath with rest. Christ healed on the Sabbath because the rule of love is above all law.
