Sunday school teacher wants satanic Halloween banned
Gloucestershire Echo/The Citizen

OUT-OF-CONTROL satanic worship may be a strong way to describe Halloween trick or treaters, but that's the firm view of a worried Sunday school teacher in Gloucester.

Youth worker Denys Golden, 52, has high hopes of staging an anti-Halloween march on October 31, and is inviting children to join him and find out how they can deliver an alternative message this year.

He would like to see Halloween banned in the city, as he claims it only encourages wrong-doing.

Mr Golden wants an official Robert Raikes day in Gloucester instead, celebrating the good work of the famous city philanthropist.

"A lot of major shops and supermarkets are buying into satanic worship by exploiting Halloween," he said.

"Costumes of vampires and witches are promoting evil and the bad guys in society. I want to help change that.

"Shops don't care about the effect on society, they are doing it for money. Trick or treat gives children the idea that doing bad things is OK.

"We have adopted this American idea but it is evil. :( It encourages children to be intimidating. Elderly people are scared in their own homes.

"Old people are not into having ghouls knocking on their doors. It isn't like carol singing which is uplifting. We should not be supporting it.

"If people dressed as angels and knocked on doors offering to do good, that would be OK. But that isn't happening.

"It is a dangerous culture that is bad on fear.

"People are scared to answer the door on Halloween.

"I want to celebrate a Christian ethos and use Robbie Raikes and what he stood for to help that.

"He saw the need for a Sunday school to help take people off the streets, away from crime and prostitution.

"I want to make October 31 Robert Raikes day.

"Grand Theft Auto is a satanic game. It has no bearing on authority.

"Encouraging young people to go around robbing, stealing, selling drugs and being violent is just wrong.

"There is no moral fibre with this game, the graphics are so real it is scary. As a parent, you worry about what the next game will be like.

"Many schools try not to promote Halloween and knocking on doors because it encourages a fear factor."

Mr Golden volunteers his time at the New Testament Church Of God in Stroud Road, and works as a youth worker alongside reformed tearaway Delroy Ellis at Increase the Peace.

He also wants to establish a Gospel Praise Festival to promote a positive message about being good.

Steve O'Connor, a spokesman for the Three Bridges Community Group covering Tuffley, Grange and Podsmead, said: "It is difficult as families will want to celebrate Halloween, but it is something that will need to be addressed if it is making people feel uneasy in their homes.

"If parents are out with their children, they should be aware of whose doors they are knocking on."

“This is an American "import" :( and do we really need something like this to swell the coffers of the shops that are selling the merchandise? I remember my first Halloween in the U.S. when I didn't have the faintest idea of what it was and I answered the door to "trick or treat" and said "I would like a treat please"--that was not the answer they were looking for and next morning my garden had been toilet papered all over the trees and slogans written on the house. I only hope that our children will be supervised and be polite if they are refused. We don't need any more sweets for children, they get too many as it is.”

I stopped all Halloween activities in my early 20,s then I had children and I continued the practice of no Halloween. They are now in their 20's and they don't do any thing related to Halloween. I do believe the devil is subtle and if the door is open just a little he finds his way in.

Growing up in England we did celebrate Halloween with a carved turnip but it was more geared towards getting money for fireworks to celebrate Guy Fawkes day on November 5th. The American customs of Halloween have crept across the pond and now they do celebrate more in the American fashion. From my own point of view I hate Halloween, there are Satanic people who do sacrifice animals especially all black or all white cats which I find horrific. The animal shelters in this area won't adopt out any all white or all black cats for the whole month of October I don't know if it's a nationwide problem but I've seen some of the poor creatures and I can assure you it's true.

I've seen programs on the TV in England on Satan worship and it's certainly widespread but I suspect what this woman is talking about are the thugs who use Halloween as an excuse to vandalize.

I think the "Halloween is Satanic" thing is a bit overhyped. Sure, I'm sure there is some of that (and I can't speak for what happens in the UK) but at least in America, most (I'd say close to 99.99% of) people spend Halloween at parties in costume or in front of the tv watching horror movies.

If putting on a costume threatens your faith....if going around asking for candy threatens your faith....

you need to work on your faith more.

Do you worship satan on halloween? Do you personally know anyone who does? There is a big difference between a satanic practice and putting on a costume.

Too easy.

I experienced Halloween when I was living in London. Seeing the aftermath the next day it is just sanctioned vandalism. If you don't give us what we want we will make you pay. It is not worthy of anyone who follows the teachings of Jesus.

England must be doing it wrong if vandalism is such an issue at Halloween. I hardly ever hear any stories in the US of this. And usually what does take place are not children of the appropriate age, it's typically older people. I hear of a lot more issues of vandalism at Christmas.

In England, they have gun control. Vandals know what's good for them, even if they pretend not to.

Halloween is pagan, so is Christmas and Easter, but the pagan influence is more subtle. the tree, santa, the Easter bunny. so if you are going to use these agruments, then if you put up a Christmas tree, watch a wonderfull life, go to a Church that has an Easter egg hunt, buy a candy bunny or egg, you are doing the same thing that treat or treating is, just in a different way.

playing dress up and walking around the neighbor hood and get candy is not a sin as long as young people understand that this is a activity, not a way of life. it is o.k. to have fun as long as you don't go to deep into stuff. as James said, keep yourself unspotted from the world.

I see folks toilet papered nearly every year and I know when I was a kid we threw eggs at cars and other vandalous things whether or not people "deserved" it.

I don't care if halloween was some pagan holiday 100 years ago. What's going on now? People set up effigies in their yards of murderers and criminals with weapons. There is one down the road with the Scream mask. Scream, the murder movie. Very insensitive to those who have been victims of murders, crimes, and deaths. Insensitive to the mentally injured. Folks walking around dressed like victims of crimes. Halloween is a celebration of death and rebellion.

Kids dress up as things God hates. They are told to blackmail their neighbors, give us something or we'll get you, and their neighbors reward them with tons of candy. Jesus died on that cross to defeat death!! And here is a holiday celebrating it.

[h=3]1 Corinthians 15:55-57[/h]New Living Translation (NLT)

55 O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?[a]

56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

'' If you don't give us what we want we will make you pay.''

England should be use to this principle. Its how their government works.

...and how does wearing this costume make you satanic? satan does not look like this..its a secular representation of the devil. Whilte christians would probably not wear such a costume, wearing one does not make anyone satanic and if seeing a costume makes you falter in your walk, your faith needs a workout.

How can christmas or halloween or easter be pagan to a christian? I never worshipped satan on any of these holidays, even before I was saved. This is more christian propaganda than it is actual truth. Just some fear mongering christians seeking to control other christians with false claims.

1 Corinthians 8:13...
Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.

(given this verse is directed at those who are new, young, and weak in faith... I found it fitting)

My Halloween is simply, well to put it best, EVIL. I take my kids trick or treating, this year I have a green Ninja and a pink Power Ranger, we usually go about 4 blocks depending on the weather. My kids aren't really big candy people. They like to dress up and see the other kids costumes. After we get home we usually watch It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

It sounds like there is a lot of trouble with Halloween in the UK. There are many churches in our area who offer alternatives to trick or treating, they have a big party. So there are options. Or just don't think about it. Simple as that.

I think it would be satanic to deny me free candy on the last day of October every year

"Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He's gotta pick this one. He's got to. I don't see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there's not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see" --Linus Van Pelt, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
