The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) currently costs about $80 billion per year and provides food aid to 14 percent of all U.S. households — some 47 million people. Those numbers swelled dramatically during the recession.

neo-fascism, this global kind (which is not the end-game)...is not like the nationalist authoritarian systems we saw after (or as a result of) WW1. those involved national industrialization, and to a large degree actual true "nationalism" (even though ludicrous national histories had to be invented - "patriotism").
but what we have now is deindustrialization of certain nations (yours) and the industrialization of others (china), by global managers, by design, not by accident or logical results of free market capitalism.
previously, arguments had been the nuttiness of ideas like - the collective vs the individual. always versus.....the end game is that on steroids, but which is reserved for after the neo-fascism is allowed to runs its course.
some conditions consitently present when fascism rises are: uber-bureaucracies and inexplicably
ineffective judicial systems (and deadlock/no compromise between govt "parties"....this is arranged easily through polarization - i.e: red/blue)

when you have unrest in the "middle class" is when you see the rise of fascism. deep polarization until the fascist elements (who are fed up with the "liberal" wing's inexplicable intractability) begin to act on the slogans they've been given as the quick fix to the deadlock: "change you can believe in; hope & change" etc....and/or "occupy this and that" tea party this and that". which are meaningless.

but if we had been paying attention, we should have seen people like Peter Drucker at work developing "management" models....and recognized those structures for what they are.
those guys are the ones who are setting up the Third Way...the thing that will have to come after the regional fascism (we can call it that now, since the sovereign nation-state no longer exists) has destroyed any remaining civilization as we know it and desire (by civilization, i mean actual civility among people in a nation).
