So what do *you* think about pet names for the guy/girl you are dating?

Do you like to be called darlin? princess? Does it matter how long you know someone? How much you like them?

Talk to me.

I just like to be called by my name...no matter how long I have known someone or how much I like them. Same goes for me calling them any pet names.

it's not a pet name so much as a nickname

But every since I was my Dad has called me Buckets
Usually "Buckets of Wonderful" "Buckets of Grace" "Buckets of Awesome" "Buckets of Pretty"
the list is actually endless and has even included such things as "Buckets of Fish Guts"

It is shortened by everyone else including my Mom to simply Buckets
only my one Grandmother calls me by my name

I have only heard my Dad say my name once
it was on the day he baptized me (he is a Presbyterian minister)

It is to the point that I won't so much as look up if my real name is used
teachers everyone just calls me Buckets

As to a pet name :) I guess as my rambling points out I wouldn't mind
yep I just said a lot to say very little

Note to self: make sure to occasionally call servantstrike princess.

I grew up being annoyed by pet names. I always thought I'd never use one or or accept one being used on me in the context of a romantic relationship. After about 10 months into my relationship, however, three pet names have managed to sneak their way into our conversations. I don't care to share them, but they are appropriate, endearing, not childish, and very personal to us. Two of them are Chinese and they make me melt pretty much every time I hear them. :)

There are still some pet names that make me cringe whenever I hear them being used (pumpkin, cupcake, sweetiepie.. why do people enjoy being labeled as edible treats?).. but it's one of those things that I have no right to really fuss over. To each their own. :)

Sometimes I love pet names and sometimes I don't. I think it has to do with how casual or sincere they are. Some people use pet names to deliberately flatter, and sometimes they are "overdone". If it comes out naturally, it's endearing.

I don't like pet names. I don't even like my own name.

Oh? So, are you "Queen" on the occasions you're not "Princess?" LOL :D
I may be a drama queen, yes.

Do you like to be called darlin? Nope. princess? Nope.
Does it matter how long you know someone? Yeup.
Frankly, I enjoy endearing pet names, and I've been called stuff like,
"my Differential,"
"Infinite Integral,"
"Angel,"
"my Riemann Sum,"
"Sugar Stuff," "
Rabbit,"
"my Turtle Dove,"
"Love,"
"Honey Bun," and other 50's geeky stuff as well.
"I am serious, and don't call me "Shirley." :D

I enjoy them. Giving and receiving. Its a form of verbal affection in my eyes. Though, as Grace said, it needs to be natural. There are generic terms like babe or something, which are fine, but something personalized as well is nice. But i enjoy finding various ways of affection.

Hey, as long as a girl is still in the room speaking to me...

I don't care what she says.

Okay, as you know, where I come from all affections are best kept within the marital design, or after a sparkling diamond whatchamacallit has been received. Only then do pet names become meaningful. Otherwise, "Dude" is just as cool as "Yo, Homie." LOL :D

But I'm a sappy hopeless romantic... it doesn't take much to make me feel special :p
