I know we went through this debate sometime in the past couple of years in another thread but rather than search for and resurrect a dead thread I figured we could revisit the topic in a new thread in an attempt to allow another thread to go back on topic.

Single = Someone who isn't in a romantic relationship. Someone who's available.

Single indicates one. If you're not married but you're in a romantic relationship, then you're a couple. If you're married, you're married and so on.

I concur with Tintin. ^^. If you tell someone you are single you are giving them the impression you have no tie to someone in a romatic way. Single means solitary to me. I would not tell someone I was single if I was romantically involved, because that opens the door for someone to make a move to initiate that kind of relationship. I would like to think people would have more devotion and loyalty to their mate/bf/gf and recognize their relationship.

Maybe there really are just people who are worse at Maths than me. Single = 1, couple = 2, several = 3 or more.

I'm no fan of Maths either, Buckets. Unfortunately, I still have to teach it.

Single has to be "never married"? I would really rather not be labeled as "divorced" forever. -_- Bleh.

Single to me is someone who is not involved in a relationship.

However, this is a public forum and people who are in relationships are certainly not wrong for participating here. I poke my head into the "young adult" forum sometimes, and I am no longer a young adult.

Also, I can't remember all of the options for relationship status there are at CC, but if there are only "married" and "single", then a person who isn't married pretty much has to choose "single", right?

THANK YOU SO MUCH for moving this topic here! ^_^ *hugs*

I've learned a lot just within the past hour about how people use the term single haha.

So, where I'm from, pretty much all the churches that are large enough to have a "singles ministry" consider single to mean unmarried, which means dating and even engaged couples are 100% welcome and are fully part of the intended demographic. Married folks are also welcome, but they're just not the main focus of the ministry. Because of this, nearly all my Christian friends use the term "singles" to refer to those who are unmarried. Hence why I was was extremely unprepared for the backlash to my post in the other thread haha.

That said, I don't actually run around telling people I'm single. I guess I use that definition more of in the context of church (or when filling out legal paperwork). For example, one time the pastor was talking about various groups of people represented in the church, and he asked the "singles" to raise their hand. My boyfriend and I were sitting right next to each other and we both raised our hands because in that context, we knew our pastor meant "unmarried adult".

*shrugs* I'm going to be more careful about how I use the term single. Don't want to confuse or offend people. It's pretty clear that the more common definition of single is one who is completely without a relationship.

Oh, no worries there, dear sister. You're very mature and not just for your age. Did you have an enjoyable Christmas? Also, did you manage to celebrate it with Alexis? I imagine Alaska's pretty cold this time of year. Be blessed, mate. :)

Christmas was amazing :) Alexis gets here tomorrow :D she is 16 now sweet sixteen was the 24th
We actually live way far away Alaska is huge
She lives way down south where it's amazing and not as cold
but yeah where I am is like -40 this time of year with 24hour darkness :(

How was Christmas down under?

Also good news Alexis is staying here for a while :) kinda issues with her parents but it's okay cause she is happy to come live with us and I don't have siblings so I'm happy
plus she can go to church every week now :)
She will miss her Dad and brothers I'm sure but she is excited
also just to be clear she didn't do anything bad :) it is over an issue with her stepmom

Anyways my Mom is awesome and my Dad is too and he's Lexi's real Mom's brother
so it's good news for everyone besides Alexis' Dad who I think is sad
well and her little brothers but they are better off not being around the fighting my Dad says

I don't really know actually what's best but I am totally happy to gain an awesome roommate :D
