I totally agree, you summed up what I have been thinking very nicely :)
The closer I draw to God I find the more "wordly" show's I simply can't tolerate the way that I used to.

I'm not here to judge what anyone watches I'm far from perfect,I'm just working out what I feel comfortable with personally.
After some soul searching I think I need to avoid supernatural type shows..ever since I was little I've been fascinated by movies like "the exorcist" even at the age of 10,I think it effects me personally as it later tempted me into the pagan community. Yes the tv shows movies I watched were what drew me into it! it goes to show what a powerful influence tv/media can have on us.
Also shows like gossip girl/ the oc I know I personally can't watch as these glorify money and make me start to idolise money.
But I personally don't feel effected by violence for example..though I know the scriptures say we shouldn't allow our mind's to dwell on ANYTHING that isn't Godly and pure the simple fact is we live in a fallen world and we can't avoid everything.
Anyway I hope this post has helped others to stop & think about what there allowing into there mind's like I did.
Wonderful testimony. You are the age I was when I began to realize I
was dishonoring the Lord Jesus by trying to mix the darkness with His
Light. You have a ministry because you have chosen the best over the
evil that comes in like as the 'angel of light.'
I guess for my part in this, the work is done. If a person insists on
watching things and try to mix darkness with the Light of Christ, there
is nothing anyone can do to keep them from doing it.
One day there will be a TRUTH reveal itself. Which one will it be ?

see, the problem with the 2 above posts, will all due respect to my elders, is this: we have liberty in Christ. some of us just want to make rules . not everything that someone does for pleasure is sin. all things can be turned into sin if we let it rule over us. but watching a t.v. show, as I said if it does not convict you or tempt you is not a sin. now I am not talking about porn or anything like that. we all need to make our OWN decisions about some things, not folks make rules, that really are not in the Word by the way, for us.
I have a problem with the red statement. There are people that are hardened to certain things & cannot feel conviction. That's where standards come in. We keep the standards whether we feel conviction or not. Those standards are set by the Scriptures.

Yes, I understand where you are coming from. I believe those christians who have a thoroughly solid knowledge of the Bible will successfully filter out reality from fiction. But since so few christians do ... your point is well taken.
This what I am trying to convey. Not sure however, you can be sure a person
has thorough knowledge and solid knowledge of the Bible. When you give
them permission to use it for study it is like assuming they won't be sucked
into the 'dark side of satan.' How do you help this person? What if he comes
back asking for prayer from the tormenting spirits ? Just saying.....

The part that is so hard to get across is be it standard or conviction, how do
we get it across to the one who is asking the question from being deceived ?
If standard doesn't get him away from it, then he needs to ask Jesus to help
him. Then conviction by the Holy Spirit will. I believe he is being convicted,
or he would not have asked. I know if my husband has something on TV
my spirit gets stirred up and obviously it does him too, because he knows I
am not comfortable with it. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate compass within.

Honestly can't think of any gay relationships on 98% of the shows I watch. I mean there was one on Game of Thrones but then one of the two died..so it was like punishment right? Negate the fact his brother ordered his red priestess to birth a shadow demon that slew him...thats not important. And you know the solution to kids seeing sex on tv? Their parents doing a better job. I wouldnt let my kids watch Game of Thrones, that would be stupid. It's not a kids or teen show.
I just mean current TV culture and how it presents and promotes homosexuality. And I'm not trying to sound crazy, but my kids were watching an animated show Sophia and the butler's voice is Tim Gunn, a gay TV personality. And my big fear is that we are not too far from them pushing a homosexual agenda through kids/teens TV shows, especially as people with those beliefs move into those professional positions, and position culture to meet their beliefs. I don't watch Game of Thrones, or any of those types of shows. I hear about Modern Family, Skins, etc, and I think it's a world we've never known before.

And I'm not trying to condemn anyone, but I know I want to walk more circumspectly tomorrow than I did today. And I hope that what I watch matches what I profess, which should be a desire for holiness. Man...if I turn out to be Ned Flanders...I mean I'm struggling with that thought right now, but ok praise Jesus!

Let me end it this way. The world created this idea that "Adults" have some license to sin. Or, since sin exists the world decided they would police it through age. As if age = maturity, but that is beside the point. I don't want to do something that I don't want my kids doing. Now be sensible with what I just wrote, but there is great truth in that I believe. So yes, the issue is parenting. But, when parents have this, "Oh I'm an adult and my parents don't inform me of my conscience anymore, I do" attitude we find ourselves with, as Mark Driscoll puts it, "A bunch of 30 year old boys that shave" (my paraphrase).

Wait...you were worried because the voice actor for a cartton show just happens to be gay? What child is a)going to care about who is the voice actor or b) try to figure it out anyways? What a paranoid reaction, talk about turning a molehill into a mountain. "Oh no this gay guy has a job in hollywood, voicing a cartton character, they must be trying to force their homosexual agenda on the children.."

Seriously get a grip. Raise your children right and stop worrying about the TV so much. Just because you can't handle it doesnt mean others are in the same predicament.

It's ridiculous now a days, how you can't even watch any type of show without some sort of nonsense in it. Good thing I stick to my Andy Griffin show....lol classic.

I love you but when your fingers hit the letters all I read is open rebellion. Bro...I don't obsess. I am ever aware of the times. if you love this world, which it seems you do, then giddyup and all that, but your posts reek of the type of error I used to know oh to well. The absolute tragedy is that we, as sinners, will put ourselves into a predicament that only God can get us out of. Oh, and then we'll say, "I don't know how I got here!" -- that's aimed at me, not you.. But if it makes you think at all...praise God for that.

You brought something to my mind with this paragraph. Sort off topic little...
Your quote about the being adult now.... That makes me think about how it
used to be we were not considered to be able to do, watch or buy anything
until we were 21. Now, look where we are. The children can watch PG 13
movies, and I personally would not watch, brief nudity ? Some language ?
I tried watching some PG 13 movies and they should have been rated R. All
we have to do is watch promos for the upcoming movie and see if it is going
to be fit for children.

I like Middle. It comes on Wed night at 8:00 EST. It takes place in INDIANA
and a family show. There is a precious young actor on there, I don't know his
screen name, but he is obviously feminine. I really love him and his character.
I know I tried to watch the one show you mentioned and I can't watch what I
know is blatantly going to be homosexuality or sexual. NO I do not watch shows
that are obviously blatant about what Christ had to go to the Cross for.
One more thing.... On the Middle... for about 3 years they allowed a young man
come on as a minister to youth with his guitar. He was allowed to be Christian,
without being pushy. I liked them because they did allow him to have a message
that God would approve of and every teen needs to hear. A couple weeks ago
I was so dismayed, because it ended with one of the shows characters having to
do a school project on Buddha. He was having to read some of the Buddha quotes.
Okay, Okay, I know that sounds like weird of me right ? Well, the point I am
making, we know Jesus Christ is Lord of all. He is a part of our Trinity, our
God the Father and Holy Spirit. We also know the secular world is doing all they
can to do away with anything Christian, and so now we will be adding false Gods
to take away from Jesus Christ. That's okay, we know who wins in the end.
Jesus Christ is coming again. ~ J~K~2

It does come down to personal conviction and I get that. The problem I see is that the 21st century is already no-holds-barred. I cannot imagine what will happen. The level of sexual discourse in movies and TV, the endless innuendo in kids' shows (often meant for adults but still absorbed by children)--the current teens are going to be so warped in ten years. We're going to see exponential growth toward destruction. I know the other side of the fence, so I'm grateful for the convictions He's given me.

Just wondering what people thought of christians watching shows/movies like supernatural? I know certain show's can open door's to the enemy to come into our life but I love these types of shows.
I think that is the problem. Why do we love them? The world loves them too. I think this should bring us to the reality that if we love something that the world loves maybe we are being taken? What do you think?

Personally, It's all about convictions...Does the TV show influence you in a negative way and ungodly thinking... Somebody might feel convicted watching the Walking Dead...I don't...and I'm convicted watching Family Guy...so I don't watch it.

But be forewarned about what you let into your mind and spirit...the things you let in...eventually come out. You should always be cautious about what you watch and what you are convicted by.

You also have to remind yourself that you should not be investing more time into TV than God because then the TV becomes your God.

but, according to some folks here we are allowed to have personal convictions , we have follow RULES that they make. not the Bible, them. they just use the Word to prop up their anti-whatever position, in this case what we can watch on t.v.

That's between the person and the Lord. For the Lord knows your straights and your weakness. And the Lord says, Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them (Mark 7:15). Other then the might be obvious that some should not be watching that would feed into that person sinful nature. And that person should know what that is. We all fall short of God's glory. And not everyone's struggles are the same. I believe many on this post are sharing the same things (in different words). As long as the person is honest with them self, for we know we can't hide anything from God.

If we really know something is what Jesus would not watch if He were
visible sitting in our room with us, we would not be comfortable. We would
be squirming, very uncomfortable, aware He is with us. That is how we
should view it now, don't you think ? The Holy Spirit resides in us.

You mentioned Family Guy. Oh my gosh, one night my husband had fallen
asleep on sofa watching a Western. He changes channels in his sleep. I
could not believe what I was hearing... he changed channel in his sleep,
and I am hearing descriptive talk about homosexuality. It was awful. I
had no idea it was like that. I had to wake hubby up and ask him to please
change channel.
Our kids are exposed to so much bad... How do we convince them 'good'
is a must, when adults don't even see 'bad' in the media?

But then even that is dependent on how we view Jesus and how much access we've given Him to our hearts/lives.

I know there have been some convictions I've grown cold on, then hot again. Like I dumped secular music when I accepted Christ as my savior and then years later opened myself up to listening to some again. Then a little more. And one day, maybe 4 years ago, I was listening to a song in the car and I was convicted hard, like realizing I had completely allowed secular music like Lilly Allen to play and…I had given myself over to purposefully listen to ungodly music. And I dumped it.

Same thing happened with some TV shows and movies. "Yeah it's a great movie but it has some nudity in it." "Oh that's fine. No biggie I'll just look the other way, pretend there's a bluebird in the corner of the screen." Wrong. It all opens the door in the wrong way.

So in reverse, if we truly open every door, every window to the Holy Spirit…I don't see how we could stop our quest to be lean Christians, cutting away more of the world's fat the closer we walk with God.

LOL!! No need to be apologetic because it not that serious of an issue with me. But I do thank you for it. I don't even like to watch cop shows because they show too much blood and graphic images. I pretty much stay away from these vampires, zombies and etc because I am not comfortable with them and no christian should be comfortable watching those bloodthirsty movies. Oh yes !!! I truly understand where you are coming from when it comes to the evil that is lurking out there. I have been very fortunate to avoid such encounters because of my knowledge from reading and listening to others. For example: A co-worker bought a computer from a woman in the neighborhood, and he turned it on and was fascinated with what he saw and I was shocked. The woman was a witch practicing santamaria (witchcraft/women or voodoo/men). When I told my co-worker what it was, he got very scared. I told him to return the computer and get his money back. I can tell you many stories like this, going back to the age of 16.
I missed this.. hadn't come back over to check it out. I believe you re: co-worker
purchased computer. I
have been on You Tube and got into a video checking out
what it was about and the screeching was horrendous , so demonic... I could not
get out of there quick enough.... I am sure we both could share some stories. I
began as a child ..... I still remember walking up our steps when I lived at home
and having a feeling someone was behind me.... Like you.. there is more.. Praise
God we have Jesus Christ our Savior... covering us with His protection and Blood.
BTW...thank you ~ J~K~2

I have no rules for anyone to live by, but my own. You have the right to follow
what you want. I don't stand before God for you on Judgement Day, you do that.
I have to give Him account for what I know His Word says, and what I do with that.
I am not ashamed of the Gospel. I am not upset if you don't like what I know to be
true and you don't like it or me. In the end .. it all will be revealed...
