My church was organizing an event for none believers and when we asked that question all of a sudden you see silence in the room!! :D

Eventually people started to share and we got all sorts of good answers at the end.

My question is about ANY sin. I'm not talking about sexual sin. Please don't focus on that.

I'd like to know your thoughts on this.

I'll start with my own thoughts first thinking, maybe because what's forbidden is usually desirable OR maybe sin fulfills the needs and desires of our broken nature. Our needs and desires are suppose to be fulfilled by God, but when we lack patience or when we are quick to anger or when our curiosity kills us, we sin.

Your thoughts?

Because sin is normally about self-indulgent, self-gratification, regardless of the short/long-term effect upon oneself or others?

The important thing to stress is that any pleasure derived from sin has a shelf life and a high price tag.

Could not have said it any better. :) I agree.

The user secularhermit said on another thread that sin (he was talking about sexual sin) gives you the impression that you live your life.
I agree with him; sin is apparently living the life, but eventually it turns against you and against living the real life in Christ.
So, when we go for the sin, we go for a "good" that is easily and rapidly achievable (we seek pleasure and avoid pain). Of course that that "good" is actually a lie, but we are sometimes blinded and urged by the desire that we commit it anyway and after we commit it, we regret. It is interesting that we can go on and on with the same sin even if we know that it hurts us just to get that brief moment of satisfaction (in my case - cigarettes).
Sin is bad, but it feels good. :(

A priest said that sin has two parts : first one is pleasure and then comes the pain (because you experience on both your body and soul the deception of it). A wise person, it is said, learn from other people`s mistakes; when we sin, we are stupid and narrow-minded and we really think that happyness lies in that sin, when it is exactly the contrary.
We also tend to believe that sin only affects the body and we think that our hearts remain untouched (because we admit that we are sinners, but we do not consider ourselves bad persons).

Yes, speaking non controversially about spiritual warfare, I say in the sense that our spirit and flesh are in a constant battle. A time comes in your Christian life that you have to stand up and enunciate "This means war!". But why we ask, is the sinful nature anything pleasurable? That is just for the flesh of course, as the fear of the Lord is to hate sin (Proverbs 8:13), and we are tempted when we are drawn away by our own lust and enticed (James 1:14). So our lusts can vary but the same principle applies which is that it's enticing to the flesh, sort of like the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Eve saw that it looked pleasing.
This must be a result of the fall, since we were then introduced to the concepts of good and evil, and our flesh from then on became sinful, as some may say everything is a seed. I suppose that's plausible. And here we are with open eyes as fools what we see such as material gain, greed, lust, pride, etc.., are appealing to the flesh the reason is as we've been going over is our sinful nature, the flesh wants what is foolishness to the spirit. Now, all of humanity being born into this growing seed of sinfulness if you will, has become prone to the sinfulness of others who may be likened to some sort of role model, a bad impression before us. Not to mention, there is a roaring lion before us who is preying on the weak and lame, known as Satan, prowling around in the bushes ready to strike his next victim! So do beware.
Fortunately we find our strength, courage, and confidence in Christ the Lord who has won the battle for our souls if we can accept that. Alright, I will wrap up with that. Good day fellow servants of Christ.

Living in sin, only makes you weaker, and the more weaker you become, its then sorry? that when Satan has you by his thumb. So the pleasure will be all his and not yours. Blind sin can take over you, By that? you can sin and not even know about it and why, or the meaning of it. That's called blind sin, however the more you sin, the more you are serving the HMV, and no I don't mean the Record store Hmv, The HMV I'm on about is His Masters Voice, " The enemy" The Devil Himself. So the pleasure of sin is not really yours just we are the devils guinepigs.

How ever there is only one way out. And I don't have to remind you I'm sure. But we are to give glory to God, so I will mention it. Jesus is the way out. Some takes longer to found out that truth.

I'm no Biblical scholar, but I would assume to man,sin is pleasurable because we are born into sin nature due to Adam & Eve sinning in the garden. It's as natural as breathing, hence why once we accept Christ into our hearts, even though our spirit is now sealed with the promise of salvation & in the heavens we now are viewed by God through the filter of Jesus & his blood shed for us,we still are commanded to put off our old nature. To renew our minds daily. To watch our speech,to give blessings & not cursings with our tongues. Our flesh will never be renewed, only brought into submission by His word through us. Flesh is now sinful since the fall, and can never be truly holy, thus why we don't take our human bodies with us when we die I'd imagine, and then we are given a new form...something that now matches our spirit & soul that is newly born of God in Christ Jesus.
Sin is as fun. It gives instant gratification. It's heart is Pride. it takes & takes & takes & never gives anything back except regret, fear, anger, sadness, pain, guilt, strife & confusion. So many sins...so little time. We seem to manage to cover them all. Great & small. Sinning in ways we don't even see as "sin". Disbelief, one of the most common that I think many times I boldly walk in & then as I am in the midst of it,I realize...whoa,this is really just so wrong, what am I doing? The sad thing about sin...is most of the time we walk in it..embrace it,with eyes wide open.

Thank God,He is long suffering with me. patient...loving...merciful...abounding in His grace to me. I make bad choices all the time...even with good intentions. He knows my heart thankfully.

Before sin, we knew nothing of pleasure, when sin entered the world, and over years, we became pleasurable to sin. Sad to say this, but its easier to sin, than to Follow God. So therefore I can see the pleasure in sin. But then comes the guilt, and the hurt, and the bad and negative after the sin. the pleasure soon disappears. So in that? the pleasure is only a short term basis.

Simona, it is true. It says easy come easy goes.

About repeating the same sin over and over again despite its negative effect on us, it shows how weak our broken nature is. It's really sad, you are right.
It says, stupidity is not about making a mistake. It's about repeating your mistake over and over again!!

So true Simona, we have to find every way possible to justify our sins to comfort our conscious and be able to sleep at night!! Basically, living in denial!! :)

Yup.

And while the ads, the billboards, the books, the "media" screams it feels good, it is good, will be good...do it...how many times does the media come back and show the wretchedness and poverty of soul and spirit after a person has mucked in the mire of sin?

Sin is a heavy taskmaster. Cruel. Brutal. Harsh. Leaves one so empty. Alone and lost.

Can I get an Amen??

It's sad Richie when we sin and we don't realize that we did. It simply means sin has become part of our life. A natural habit or behavior that we do it so smoothly without knowing it's a sin. I think that's a very dangerous stage of sinning when one sins n' it becomes part of his/her life. :(

No worries iTore, you don't need to be a Biblical scholar :)

You are right, the evil one tricks us by showing us sin as being fun, satisfying, enjoyable, all the good stuff. Have you read The Screwtape Letters for C.S.Lewis? It's REALLY good. It shows how the devil tricks us in SO many ways to sin, exactly what you're saying here.

Yes, thank God for His love and patience with all of us. He's like our GPS that keeps recalculating to put us back on the right route to heaven. Our role is to grow in our relationship with Him. :)

You are right Richie, it's easier to sin than to follow God because cheap things are very easy to be attained. Precious things with great value are SO hard to be attained or owned. You have to work for it.
Think of it that way, how easy it is to own a rock verses owning a pure diamond?!!! I'm not saying diamond because it's what every woman likes :D but because of how precious it is! :)

Julls, can you elaborate on how pleasure driven from sin has a shelf life?
Some examples:

Rebellion - You get YOUR way, but you end up with a mess you need God to clean up.
Sexual immorality - People become no more than tools for you to use and vice versa. You steal from yourself because you don't realize what you are missing in a godly relationship with the opposite gender.
Alcoholism, drug and/or pretty much any other obsession or addiction - You START out enjoying these things and controlling them, but in the end they control you and steal from you (as well as those around you).
