Joyce Meyer is an excellent writer. I read/heard her say one time that she went into preaching because she knew that she had a way with putting ideas into words that people could understand. My opinion: Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. These people are right - some of her teaching is not orthodox BUT that doesn't mean you can't learn from her. She's given me great encouragement over the years, though I haven't listen/read her recently.
As far as Joel Osteen, he's REALLY good for when you need a boost. But, his talents lie in video production - he says it himself - and he doesn't teach sound theology. Again with the baby and water stuff. He serves a purpose - but I personally don't think he knows theology very well.
(And just a word of advice: Not saying the people here on CC are doing this, but when someone criticizes a preacher, it's usually to push their own doctrine, or what they think is right. It's not about YOU getting good teaching for yourself - it's about being the one who is right. It's a pride issue. Not saying I can read people's hearts, but I can read my own, and I used to bash Meyer too.)
As for a book, pick up some C.S. Lewis girl! He's great! I really loved his children's series about Narnia (you can get them all in one volume now), Mere Christianity is good for teaching and doctrine, and the Screwtape Letters is good for comedy! Happy reading!
