BTW, over PM an interesting point was brought up regarding video cam. The recommendation to do video Skype or webcam is after the chatting is on a path of "exclusive relationship."

In light of catfishing gaining ground by way of anonymity to prey upon unsuspecting victimIts, it's imperative to know who exactly you are befriending beyond the chatter of these forums.

It's very okay not to do video or post your photo online as long as your heart is not being pursued, but once the transition is made to be in an "exclusive relationship," then yes, both parties should consider video Skype. :)

I actually DON'T have a webcam on this computer. :p

Number 1 red flag for me is asking for my contact info when you don't even know me.
Memorize these lines Kimosabe.

I wish I'd met her sooner.
Fortunately I stepped to it...
..had to be a new strategy she was leaving to an academy
Can I have your digits?
Sorry, I'm traveling, it's kinda hard to get at me
Whats your major by the way?
Fraudulent activity.

Ehh... If someone is that shy not to even skype before going to "going steady" status, that's kind of a red flag too isn't it? I mean, just have a burner skype account so the catfish doesn't get your last name, and no one should really care who gets it.

I'd say the tiering goes from chat to burner skype to legit contact information. Progressive lines of defense and all that.

Yeah as soon as there is some sorta emotional connection established, and it's clear it's more than hi/bye/how ya doing chit chat, it's time to get the other person on cam to verify they are at least the same person as in the pics. People can be very naive, and buy any excuse someone will give not to get on webcam, or not to take a photo that clearly verifies they are at least real. Folks, don't be naive, if after establishing an emotional connection they make excuses not to show their face on cam, or make excuses NOT to give a photo that clearly identifies they are real, then run for the hills.

If they have true intentions of meeting you eventually, they'll have to show you their face in the end. So don't go buying excuses. No matter how "legit" their excuse sounds. Wise up!

I love this line.....

ServantStrike says: Whats your major by the way?
Fraudulent activity.
One time I asked this girl where she went to school and she told me "Yale".

I replied "I SAID, WHERE - DO - YOU - GO - TO - SCHOOL?"

hahaha this thread keeps getting more and more interesting. I have this online friend, we've been friends for years and I recently discovered she had a whole new facebook and was using my pictures with her name to talk to strangers and such. When confronted about it she denied it all even though certain common friends noticed her activity as well. Since then I try to be extra careful with my pictures and identity online.

That's horrible.:|

But that's probably how these catfish can be catfish without being picked up by google image search.
Just make another friend and use their pics from Facebook.

is there a way to avoid the random pms from strangers (in the settings)?
The settings Banana mentioned work for the Forums only, not chat. At this time there is no way to block all PM's in chat.

well, I just facebook stalked some of you, so I know you are real.

...gosh, I'm creepy...

The sad thing is that some of these Catfish are crafty enough to create phony Facebook profiles along with phony Facebook friends to make it look legit.

Yes, I can easily agree. I suppose folks falling in love would want to know what each other looks like, right? :)

idk about this falling in love stuff. But If I have something to discuss with people I know. I make them ditch the cell phone (government spy device) and we go on a walk around. I never discuss real personal stuff over any electronic communications (phone, email, ect) it is always in person.
