The IP address should match the location of the person you're chatting with within a city-block.

I use mobile broadband internet access, and even though I live in VA, my IP address will routinely return DC or MD as its location. A lot of broadband users have dynamic IP addresses that will bounce around each time they connect to the net and not show a consistent (or accurate) location.

^ Yep. Mine is dynamic too but my router is hard wired, so to speak. It doesn't change every time I sign on, but I know how to change it. Mine reports to one of three places usually. One of them is my actual location and the other two are 20 minutes away or so.
Also..two words: Proxy server.
IP checks can be great, but not foolproof.

If anybody is curious what their own IP shows, just go to: https://duckduckgo.com/ and type "IP" in the search box. The first thing shown is very basic. Other sites go into more detail.

The best catfish and trolls already know this information, so y'all should too.

Correct, PopClick. The advice is the check the IP against the catfish's story. Red Flag is the catfish won't explain why the IP address doesn't match his story.

you know. I happened to be a mod on some other site. and letting phone have internet access IMO was a big big mistake. got real tired of chasing down multis who ended up just a few people using a phone but was showing the same "IP".

Now we also ended up naming the phone people "phone losers"

Tips:
The godly man will love you time after time and beyond a computer screen. A saint doesn't give up on you even when you call him at odd hrs needing prayer.

Tips:
The godly sister will never entice you to carnal thoughts, but instead, she will encourage your heart in loyalty to you beyond the computer screen.

Tips:
A godly man who truly cares about you will include you in his future by wanting to protect yours. A godly man speaks in the plural "we" when referring to himself, but speaks in the singular "woman," when referring to you.

Remember, a godly man will further protect your honor with his own heart.

A godly man brings integrity to the relationship he is building together with you by introducing you to his parents, his immediate family, his friends. Yes, you become his joys everywhere he goes, and there's nothing fishy about that.

After all, when God is maturing the exclusive relationship into a more permanent one, then of course, both parties (he & her) become transparent with each other; hence, FaceTime or video Skype become essential.

Red Flag
A catfish will want you to tell others about himself; that's the narcissist behavior driving the catfish. After all, he already has your attention, now he wants to be known in your circles as well. That's a Red Flag.

I don't look for love online. Never have, but sometimes it finds you. I don't like to PM. This is well known. I don't like to cam either. Both of those things have led to situations I do not care for. I want everything I do or say online to be right out in the open for all to see, which is why I prefer the forums to chat. Anyone can see everything I type here at any time. If someone wants to be in a serious relationship with me they need to step up, ask me out and date me in person. Period.

Anyone I've ever met online and seriously considered dating has been given my personal/office phone numbers, business website listing my physical business address (I never, ever, EVER put my personal address online for any reason whatsoever) and has been free to contact me anywhere at any time of the day or night. And they have. They have sent flowers. They have spoken with my co-workers. They were given every opportunity to confirm I was exactly who and what I said I was.

Do what you have to do to protect yourself, but I've been working the Internet for a very long time and I do not recommend online dating at all. I've said this time and time again. If you want to date someone, do it in person. Meeting them online is fine, but date them in person. People can type or talk on cameras/phones all day long, but there will still be some very dangerous things you cannot see or know about them.

Precisely. At the end of the day, both parties involved need to know you both exist outside cyberspace!

Attend church together; exchange pastor's phones; visit their employer together, etc. Whatever you find reasonable to verify the person's story and identity is a good sign of good intent he has to commit to a relationship with you.

Don't fall for the line, "I'm Mike, the manager at Coca-Cola. See?"

Like right; try calling a big corporation and ask for "Mike, the supervisor," and you'll see how far that'll get you.

As someone who specializes in security matters, I'm not a fan of messing with someone's employment. Requesting or giving out info on employees, especially for personal reasons, can cause legal problems for both you and the business owner. However, many businesses do have automated telephone directories with employees listed (unless it is extremely large and lists only officers/dept heads). Call the number listed on the website and listen for the person's name (Better if you do it at night so a receptionist doesn't answer instead). Hang up.

OR go meet them for lunch.

If I had gone to my car at lunch or after work and found someone sitting on my car with flowers, I wouldn't have minded that at all.

I totally agree there with you, Jules. On the one hand, authors recommend to verify the identity of who is your Beau, including employment, while on the other hand, this kind of stuff shouldn't even exist among the saints.

I believe we are to never lie, but be always transparent as far as the Lord is concerned, and bring the Lord Jesus with you in all your thoughts and conversations. I totally love your openness when you said that you'd be available for phone conversation with your sweetheart even at odd hours of the night.

In other words, you are available to inconvenience yourself for the sake of serving the one you love. That's just sweet and treasured in my dictionary.

The saints should never have the need to jump "lions, tigers and bears; oh my!" when things are done in the sincerity of Christ, but catfish are master deceivers. Hence, the recommendation of those authors: to seek verification to weed out the catfish.

The last man I went out with offered me the name of his church, and encouraged me to call his pastor and ask about him. I didn't feel the need to take him up on that, but I appreciated the gesture. Since I work for my church, he found my name on my church's website and verified who I was too.
