Aloha!
Hi guys! In general, what makes a good movie? List some of your top favorite movies that have come out so far and explain what made it your favorite. I'm not genre critical, so whatever kind of movie that floats your boat, maybe any suggested movies would be cool. I like a good thriller, scary like movie, I love to scream. I also like comedies that make you laugh no matter how many times you've watched it. And those movies that have a deep story that all makes sense at the end. So tell us what movies made the cut!

I like:

Paranormal Activity
The Exorcism of Elisabeth Rose (Don't know how it's spelt)
The Exorcist
Rambo (all of them)
Roxky (all of them)
The Terminator (1+2+4, not the third)
The Shawshank Redemption
and a lot more... But for a movie to be truly amazing it must be able to make you feel like you are a part of it. The ones Above make me feel like that.

Shawshank is a good choice. There are so many good movies that i cant name them all

Star Wars (originial)
Godfather
Duck Soup
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Ben-Hur
Taxi Driver
Lord of the Rings

I love the original three Star Wars movies (not the horribly awful ones that have been released in recent years) because they were the first movies I ever saw in the theater. This seemed to set off a trend, seeing as I also loved:

*Indiana Jones
*the FIRST Matrix movie (NOT the second two)
*Terminator 2 (the first was ok... didn't like the third... haven't seen "Salvation" yet)
*I've also enjoyed many animated and stop-animation movies, such as The Incredibles and The Nightmare Before Christmas
*some Jet Li films (I tend to like a little butt-kicking)
*I even liked Aeon Flux, though it was slammed by most...
*Ultra Violet
*Alien Resurrection (I love watching Sigourney Weaver show 'em who's boss)

I also liked G.I. Joe but Transformers... not so much... as I'm a sucker for good special effects but have to have likable characters and some sort of feasible plot, for the most part (I loved the Transformers cartoon but didn't like the movie as much... haven't seen the second one yet.)

I tend to love action, martial arts, some suspense/psychological drama, and comedies (though they're hard to find, as I don't like the raunchy ones and that's all there seems to be.)

For some reason, horror movies literally keep me awake at night. I've had friends just DESCRIBE movies like The Ring to me and I've had to sleep with a night light... (clucking noises)... Yeah, I guess I'm a big chicken at heart but I'd rather watch guns going off, a series of roundhouse kicks off the side of a wall, or buildings being blown up...

"Chick flicks"? No thanks... usually not for me (except When Harry Met Sally... classiic.)

In general I would say drama is my favourite genre, I like character driven films that examine life and human history no matter what the setting or what viewpoint the story is told from, but I love comedy films but not so much the kind that are common now, I prefer slightly older comedies.

Some of my favourite films in each by genre are:

Action - The Rock, The Matrix Trilogy
Comedy - Planes,Trains & Automobiles, The Three Amigos, Galaxy Quest. Trading Places
Drama - The Illusionist, The Count of Monte Cristo, Unbreakable
Epic/Historical - The Alamo(2004), Amazing Grace, Lord of the Rings
Romance - The Lakehouse
War - We Were Soldiers
Western - Open Range, Appaloosa, Dances With Wolves
Sci-Fi - Star Trek Generations, First Contact, Serenity

There's lots more but the only genre I don't really like is Horror/Thriller.

Some of my favorite films are:
The Godfather
Batman Begins
Casablanca
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
The Guns of Navarone
Ben Hur
Lawrence of Arabia
Letters from Iwo Jima
Munich
There are others, I like old-school films, especially WWII, period films.

sports films are not an option :(

It's funny: I watched an interview with Martin Scorsese just yesterday, and he is apparently not a fan of sports films. He said it's the one kind of movie he doesn't like. It's ironic because he made Raging Bull, which centered on a boxer; but he said of the film that the boxing was merely a vehicle for the larger story, and once he saw that, he had no problem making the movie. But sports movies in general he just has no interest in.

Best sport movie of all time - Mighty ducks.

hmmmmmmmmmmm, I tend to change my mind about what makes a good movie all the time. lemmeseeeee...

In random order:

Schindlers list - Because it's a really good way to show the different sides of that conflict, war and society
Reservoir Dogs - Tarantino never fails :D
Sin City - Cool concept with the colors and cartoonish characters
Identity - Confusing story...
Død snø (Dead snow) - Just hillarious
Pay it forward - Now that's a movie to use as inspiration

I like movies which I can connect with the emotions of the characters. Some of the movies which did this for me were -

The Count of Monte Cristo (version with Jim Caviezel)
King Arthur
Sahara
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Ben-Hur
Hidalgo
Lion of the Desert
Frequency
Taken
Indiana Jones
Star Wars
Kiss of the Dragon
Kellys Heroes
