Haha yea I should have done some research and I didn't but it was definitely eye opening, makes me wonder which is correct since everyone has their own interpretation.Never just visit a Pentecostal church without knowing what you will get yourself into. They should post a disclaimer on the front entrance (no offense intended).
Anyway the variance in worship can be drastic from one denomination to the other. Imagine going from a baptist hymn singing service right into a holy spirit filled dancing/jumping/yelling revival
It's in the end about the sufficiency of Scripture, or whether people are dissatisfied and want to try to add their own experiences as being supposedly authoritative.
If you have the Holy Spirit you are a child of God, the gifts come as the Spirit wills.
Seek the Giver above seeking gifts.

The best assumption we can make is that Paul found some disciples of John the baptizer, Who had become believers of the Jewish God; they had not heard the full Gospel of Jesus death resurrection and the whole truth. Paul preach Jesus for 2 yrs. with many maricles grounding these believers in Christ. More latter, Love to all, Hoffco.
If you accept the sacrifice of Christ for your sins and His resurrection promise of new life, you are saved. The gifts (such as tongues) are available for those who will receive them, but their evidence is not required for salvation. Among those who receive them, well, we humans often over-do such things, which is why Paul told some to put a leash on it. Pray for discernment, all the gifts should glorify the Christ, and if they are aimed at anything else be very suspicious.

Before you believe you are born again of the Spirit, he draws you to believe, after turning from your sin and believing in Him, then the Spirit dwells within you to sanctify you and seal you for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30). You must be both regenerated and have the Holy Spirit to be a Christian.

When you receive the Holy Spirit you will speak in tongues - book of Acts. That's what happened to me and 100s of members locally, nationally and internationally !

I just came upon 1 Corinthians 12 & 14 and it explains it greatly, thanks to a friend who just sent it to me. So it's a gift and not everyone can have it so I don't feel bad anymore
In fact, if people in church are claiming to want to compel you to 'speak in tongues', etc., it's probably time for you to find a more Bible based church!

What passes as "tongues" in churches today is not the Biblical tongues..........Holy Spirit given gift.........seriously, hurt feelings or not..........what goes on today is gibberish designed to edify ones self and convince others that one has the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

Essentially the Holy Spirit is within us the day we become born again. The charismatic concept of 'receiving the spirit' is more along the lines of receiving a new interaction, rather than an accepting in, each time. The 'receiving the spirit' idea of charismatics is the one that places emphasis on tongues and other 'signs'. But in reality these are two separate concepts, just worded too similarly to be clear to people who haven't yet learned the distinction.
That said, i personally, am not charismatic any longer, and no longer accept the charismatic view of the Holy Spirit.

That was then; this is now. The Bible is now complete and we don't need more authority to confirm the Gospel, as happened when the Bible in Apostolic times was not yet complete.
Not sure of what your definition of "charismatic" is.............but IF you mean Pentecostal, then neither am I. However, I fully believe in the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, and the gifts He imparts to believers.......That makes me "Holiness."

Yeah, what he said. You are baptized in the Spirit when you accept Christ. What others interpret as a later baptism is actually a first experience in letting the Spirit that's already inside you inside you flow out thru you. Tongues are popular because they're cheap and easy, if you'll pardon the expression. It doesn't take much faith to babble incoherently in a crowd that is doing so. It takes more faith to place a hand on someone and speak a word of healing, or wisdom or knowledge or such. Especially when you're away from the babeling crowd and out in the real world. Tongues is the least of the gifts, if there is such a thing. We should be available to receiving whatever gift is necessary to bring God's will to bear on a situation. And to do so away from the babeling crowd, where the need is greatest.
I am not sure what you mean with that makes me holiness, amm but in fact the gifts of the spirit are meant to build up the body of Christ, the fruits of the spirit such as peace, mercy, self control ,those are living proves of our constant journey to holiness. God bless you.
hadaza: The claimed gifts of the Spirit (which some people define differently sometimes, anyway) are supposed to edify the body, and if they manifestly do not, then this speaks for itself. Yes, your reference to Galatians and the fruit of the Spirit is very relevant.
