So lets see what everyone thinks.

"What is Sin".
-From a biblical standpoint.

Note: I'd prefer people not to spam with the vague verses like "the wages of sin are death" or likewise, because we all know that's something that can be interpreted in many ways and doesn't really add to the discussion as a whole.
=================================

My thoughts:

1. We know sin is not based on "morality". A lot of things are left out(slavery), a lot of things are considered "sin" which aren't really moral or immoral(i.e. eating pork), and as a whole morality is kinda "skewed" in the bible as far as the old testament is concerned.

2. The most practical definition of sin is to "go against god". Now there are a plethora of instances in the bible where there is not a direct sin discussed but there is direct punishment from god or commanded by god, it's safe say to assume going against god(and his commandments) is what generally counts as sin.

I disagree on your comment that sin is not based on morality/immorality. You are correct that slavery is never suggested to be a sin, except in regard to "Israel's" own countrymen. But I would like to point out two things: 1) Israel was taught to be kind to slaves both in the old and the new 2) If Jesus Christ died for all men and placed us under a new covenant, then, considering that all men are my neighbors, then we should come to the conclusion that no man can be our slave. But that we have all been released from slavery to sin to be slaves to Jesus Christ.

Yes, I do realize that Paul wrote Philemon, but it is a request for the release of a brother that was formerly a slave.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20
[SUP]12 [/SUP]All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. [SUP]13 [/SUP]Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. [SUP]14 [/SUP]Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power. [SUP]15 [/SUP]Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! [SUP]16 [/SUP]Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.” [SUP]17 [/SUP]But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. [SUP]18 [/SUP]Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. [SUP]19 [/SUP]Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? [SUP]20 [/SUP]For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

You disagreed with why it is not about morality, yet you didn't state why

But I can discuss your points on slavery anyway.
1. Christianity didn't come to that conclusion, so it was not self-evident. It's also a rather round-about logic compared to the other commandments which are pretty cut-and-dry.
(not to mention the verses discussing slavery).
Note: I'm not attacking the bible for not saying slavery is wrong. I'm just saying that it does not encompass all of morality.

2. If you wish to debate about biblical slavery, I'd love to do that. But that's not the topic right now so refrain from doing so.

Actually, I did address why, through scripture. If we have been joined to God, through Jesus, and having received the Holy Spirit, then we are to show the Love of God through our lives, our actions, and our words. If we engage in actions unbecoming of Christians, then we drag God through the "mud".

Maybe it would be helpful for you to think of this in the same way a you would a dirty cop. No one likes a dirty cop. Not civilians, not authorities, and certainly not other criminals. Yes, people do enjoy the benefits of the corruption while it is happening (if there are any benefiting), but they always know that he can turn on them at any time. It is an unstable relationship that only causes grief, currently and in the future.

Apparently, you're the Christian, you tell us. Also, it's God, not god.

“What is sin?
It is the glory of God not honored.
The holiness of God not reverenced.
The greatness of God not admired.
The power of God not praised.
The truth of God not sought.
The wisdom of God not esteemed.
The beauty of God not treasured.
The goodness of God not savored.
The faithfulness of God not trusted.
The commandments of God not obeyed.
The justice of God not respected.
The wrath of God not feared.
The grace of God not cherished.
The presence of God not prized.
The person of God not loved.
That is sin.”

- John Piper

Now some project negativity onto Christians when Christians say that something is bad, when it is. They will go as far as to say it is a hate crime. This is ridiculous. Now, some Christians can be ugly and destructive when addressing sin, and that is wrong. But to loving try to help someone who is stumbling around in sin, is not hate.

Another problem is that many Christians have a plank/log in their eye. And this to can be bad, because, even though what they are saying may be correct, it is hard to take them seriously when you see the very obvious plank protruding from their face. It is common and understandable to discredit the whole when there is a glaring inconsistency in a part.

I am aware of a plank in my own eye, but I like to think it is not too big:). More like an eye patch over one eye. I joke, but I am not perfect and I do sometimes wonder if I do more harm than good.

My take on sin....
Sin is the will of Satan. That is the deeds that Satan wants us to do to SEPERATE us from God. Sin is the ONLY thing that can seperate us from God. And ALL sin is a choice. Satan can lay his will on the table, like.... Hey look at that porn-site and lust for the ladies there..... Or God can say, .... No do not use the time on that site, rather answer this young man in CC on what sin is.

You see I had TWO choices a few seconds ago... I could go look at pron, or I can sit here and ask God to give me wisdom to answer you what sin is. My friend God says there are TWO ways (wills) on earth. One is a broad way to hell and that is Satan's will, and the other is a NARROW way of God to heaven. There is no third way or will. Many people teach we have a free will, but actually we do not have a will. God has one for us to be holy (without sin) and satan has one for us to remain in sin. We can only be in one of the two wills. God says very clearly we cannot serve Him and Satan, only one of the two. And the one we are obeying is the one we appoint as out master.

So sin is Satan's will, and no sin is God's will. That is how I get it in the Bible. One heart (the stony heart we get when we sin) will always sin. And the other heart (the fleshly heart from God) will NEVER sin. Look at the two hearts and how God change the men of God to WALK IN HIS WAY (WILL) and they will NEVER sin again.... The stony heart is the only heart that sins.... Ezek 36:26 and 27... A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
What is God's statutes and judgment in one short verse.... Mat 5:48.... Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

It is a sad state of affairs when we have had the bible for 500 years and people are not taught what sin is in their church correctly. Sin is only one thing doing your own thing. Read genesis God told adam and eve to do anything exepte eat the apple so they eat the apple that is sin Making some other person God making some other person the one you listen to, making a friend or counselor some one you listen to above prayer and the Bible,, putting your conscience under some other person,,,,,,, that is sin....... listening to your church leader instead of what the Bible says,, that is not tolerated by God......... and people who do not listen and do the entire word of God will not be allowed into heavenly universe ......... far too dangerous ........ God can see infinitely into the future the effect from every word and action....... if your words and actions match the Bible then God sees that there will be peace _______ if they are your own words and actions,, people will die and eventually the whole universe will perish,,,sin is contagious______ sanctification is learning how to live happily within the bounds of the Bible ______ and rejecting immediately every non Bible statement or principle~! the LAW is the perfect protection for the universe~. those ten precepts prevent any more satans from popping up~.~.~. eve would have never eaten the apple if she kept the law~.~.~. and guess who wants to tell us the law is done away with? ~,~,whoinvebted it~_~_~_ Satan, yes and his henchment for it protected the universe against HIM and he htes it the law works there is only one definition of sin SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and the ignoring of any word of God in the bible that is sin any other definition is totally wrong and we need to dump it 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

sin is the transgression of the law
and God loves his law
and he loves those who keep the law
The law is his character~ We have been so brainwahsed tand been sold the false bill of Goods that the law is done away with we are no longer told sin is the transgression of the law!
But that is what sin is all about ignoring the law
without the law there is no sin
yet we know that there is sin look around you so the law still is in effect

It doesn't really matter what you or I think, what matters is what God says in His Word...

...........worry not, ONCE AGAIN, he has recreated himself and STILL can't remember to capitalize God........

(or, refuses to for some reason only known to him...........)

Gotta give him credit though, he doesn't give up easily............kinda like a weed in a yard of beautiful grass........just can't seem to ROOT him out............sigh........

Your definition of sin depends on what doctrine you follow. Christian doctrines fall under two major categories: Doctrine of the Law or Doctrine of Grace.

If you are of the law, then sin is the failing to meet the requirements of this Law(of Moses), depending on your degree of recognition of the commandments contained in this law. Thus, your judgments of what is right or wrong to God is based on outward observation, what one eats, whom one associates with, how one dresses, language one uses, music he listens to, etc.

On the other hand, if you are a grace christian(like I am, and as preached by Paul), then sin is the rejection of grace and looking to the law for justification and definitions of right and wrong. So if you subject yourself to the law, you will think and behave as explained in the first category above.

I told you my opinion and asked for yours. Eh, grammar.

Some truth with a whole lot of crazy.

Seriously, I'm reading these replies and people are telling me to ask god for the answer, some ridiculous story about a dirty cop, and a lot of them just don't have any answer but are posting vague nonsense.

Guys, I'm looking for a simple definition from the bible. Not 5 metaphors and a housecat. If you don't have an actual explanation, please don't bother responding.

Its rude I know, but I don't want or need 3 paragraph replies that boil down to "i don't know so I'll just put whatever".

Doctrine of grace actually would fall under law according to the bible.

Paul can say that sin is the "rejection of grace" but people are punished in the bible for direct reasons of Sin, ergo disobeying the law.

there are two types of sin. Sins of pride This is the sin that Satan committed and convinced Adam to commit. The apple has nothing to do with it. Adam sinned by directly disobeying Gods word. sins of pleasure are sins that are pleasing to the flesh for a season and then they become bondage such as drugs, alcohol, pornography and so on.

The only answer to either of the two is the cross and faith in it.

I'm not asking the "type" and what is considered sin in the bible is already clear.

I'm asking what is sin itself. Please, reading comprehension guys.
