Begin rant.

I have noticed that when I put "Christianity and Very Serious About It" as my religion on certain dating websites, and then message people, they automatically see this picture of who I am based on a stereotype that exists in America. They don't even read the profile, all they can see is the stereotype and ignore me from that point on.

What stereotype am I talking about?

That since I'm a Christian and serious about it,
A: I'm insane and not very smart because I believe this in the technologically advanced 21st century
B: I believe everything that the extreme right believes, including the viewpoints of Adolf Hitler
C: I'm a Republican, and love guns and etc.
D: Fill in your own stereotypes here because I think you know what I'm talking about, and I'm afraid to offend someone. Haha.

The problem is, I only claimed to believe in Jesus Christ, I said nothing about my political and etc beliefs. People should not assume anything about me, except what I clearly stated, which is my belief in Jesus.

Rant over.

Has anyone else experienced this type of stereotyping on dating websites? Come on tell your funny stories.

P.S. A few days ago, it got so bad that I actually removed my religion status from the dating site. Then I felt bad, and felt like I'm betraying God. So I finally put it back to "Christianity and Very Serious About it" because its true, and I'm not lying to God and to myself. If they are not smart enough to see past stereotypes, and if their whole worldview is based on stereotypes, I feel extremely sorry for them. I'm not changing it again.

B: Um. What? Your username is eugenius not eugenics! Also, anyone who believes evolution is the answer would only be consistent in their beliefs if they took action like Hitler did. I'm not condoning his actions, far from it - they're deplorable.

You are correct sir, I actually argued this point on an Apologetics forum before, and got into a 45 minute argument with atheists, but lets not go there. Lets stay on topic.

Well, any true Christian would see "Christianity and Very Serious About it" and see it for what it was, and wouldn't have all of these secular stereotypes come to mind. So in some ways this is a blessing in disguise. I've told someone that I was a Christian and had them say that they were Catholic only to find out later that they thought that was just something that people said and that we were still going to have sex. Upon further research I stumbled across the following statistic,

"In a recent ChristianMingle study, 50% percent of female Christians and 39 percent of Christian males said they went to church at least once a month. Of the 716 Christians surveyed, 90 percent said they would be comfortable with premarital sex; 61 percent of these said without any strings attached."

So apparently saying that you are a Christian might not even get the message across these days. I think you'll save a lot of time and energy with "Christianity and Very Serious About it".

There is also a lot of pressure from society in general now a days to have premarital sex, and you are looked down upon if you don't. It looks like its especially hard to be a Christian in the 21st century.

This. If someone is going to has bad assumptions about a serious Christians, then

1. Is that person going to accept you and your faith for what it truly is? Can you open the ears of someone who's already plugged them up and is screaming, "LA LA LA LA can't hear you!" when the topic of Christ comes up?
2. Would you want to be with someone who doesn't consider THEMSELF "Christian and very serious about it?"

(By the way, most of us here have been on the various dating sites out there. Your specific use of nomenclature gives it away. You can just say it was OKCupid, man. We aren't going to judge; we're right there with you.)

There is also a lot of pressure from society in general now a days to have premarital sex, and you are looked down upon if you don't. It looks like its especially hard to be a Christian in the 21st century.

Well...yeah! The world isn't on our side! They're going the opposite direction we are, and if they aren't, then we're doing something wrong. Christ didn't say it would be easy, He said it would be hard. Paul's first epistle to the church at Thessalonica is all about that - staying true to God in a world that doesn't accept Him. We're out here in the fleshly world, surrounded by the fleshly minded, trying to live spiritual lives. We're strangers in a strange land. This is to be expected. Many will claim to follow Him, but if you look at their walk, you'll see it not be true...narrow is the road, my brother! It's a road too hard and narrow for many who claim to be Christian, and they're often going to not walk the path for that very reason. There's a great number of us here, I'd wager, who have struggled, either in the past or even now, with leaving the world behind and doing it HIS way, the way HE told us to.

If it feels like trying to find a needle in a haystack, that's because it is. I know your struggles as you describe them, because I see it myself. But in the end, I'd rather be alone in the world than compromise my commitment to Christ by compromising the kind of spouse I'll accept.

He never promised us a spouse. He never promised us ease. He never promised us unending joy while we walk this earth. Our reward lies beyond this, and we only reach it by keeping our eyes on Him. If you bind yourself to someone who DOESN'T have their eyes on Him, you're not traveling toward Him anymore.

Don't compromise.
Don't hide who you are, who He made you.
Let your light shine, and if it's too bright for a woman to accept, then she's no woman for you.

If you're talking about a dating website...
then it's best if unbelievers DO stereotype you,
and KEEP AWAY!

Sounds to me like everything is just fine.

Religious info belong in the profile and it should be simple if it is not a religious dating site. When you stated that you were "Very Serious," many non Christians or lukewarm Christians will see you as a "right-wing" nut or freak. It is just the world we live in.

Sorry, I must have missed something. How do you know that they assume these things about you, or that they haven't read your profile? Did they tell you that?

I'm also on okcupid and went with the christianity and somewhat serious about it. If people are interested in you and your religion they will typically ask what you mean. I let them know I mostly put it because I don't want to be associated with the religious right nutjobs in society and i believe the following things and done. It keeps people from assuming the worst and allows you to actually explain your own position on things.

I´m glad you did what you wrote on your PS Mr Eugenius.

I have spent all my life seeking my match and I failed more than I thought I could (so I have canceled all those accounts I had).

I´m not good to give any a tip, so I can share what I did: Wait on the Lord and follow JESUS. The rest would pass away (though I learned I will not date a woman with several kids).

Hi!
There was a time I thought I was a democrat. Nowaday I´m thinking I´m becoming THEOcrat. I had several guns, I was a good shooter and also like being a sniper, but I taught my sister´s son how to do it in a PC: "telling him the enemy must be killed". How could I teach any where´s the enemy? If a have killed dogs, birds and good feeelings?

I´m thankfull GOD warned me against those guns I lost but my faith of nominally being a theocrat has to be shaped in His beliefs by dying to my self, by believing in the ONE who really saves. :)

Explain to me how your argument that 'anyone who believes evolution is the answer (for what?) would only be consistent in their beliefs if they took actions like Hitler did' makes sense, because I'm very interested in understanding the logic behind that.

I think it's great that you put that as your status and those who choose to make assumptions about you aren't worth your time anyways.

If I was a girl on those dating sites and came across that, I would definitely be interested in exploring what your faith is to you. I would just make sure that you weren't too radical or off the wall xD

And like others said previously, it helps you not to waste time. :)

I see what you mean. Government and, by extension, politics has a place in our realm, because the justice and order of God demands it. It is, when working according to its purpose, a terrestrial manifestation of the Law. The Law convicts, sentences, and reins in the chaotic elements of human nature.

The Law does not redeem. The government cannot redeem. Guns cannot redeem. Only Christ can.

Our duty of priests in his Kingdom does not absolve us from our civic roles. We are to remain in the world and not of it; clever as serpents, innocent as doves.

Wow, those statistics (if true) are highly disturbing! Are these Christians even reading their Bibles to see that the Holy Spirit wants to help us to grow to be more Christ-like?
