Here is a good link explaining about food products which have been banned in many countries, but are still being used in the US and other countries. I was happy to see that a few were banned in Canada, and most of the others I would never eat. Papaya is the worst one, it has good digestive enzymes, but unless you get it from Brazil, stay away from it.

I can tell you the potassium bromate issue is true. I more than likely got my thyroid issues because of it. (Now, I have no thyroid)

I realize pseudoscientific nonsense is bound to run amok in a "natural health" subforum, but Mercola is a discredited website that's long been criticized by the general scientific consensus, as well as critics of alternative health and medicine dedicated to exposing unsubstantiated claims. Most of the article cited above is scientifically dubious at best, especially in reference to the alleged horrors of GMO food.

I'd also like to point out that foreign domestic policy with respect to health and welfare isn't always for the best in spite of good intentions. Amalgam fillings, for instance, are widely regarded by the scientific consensus as harmless -- yet they've been banned by several European countries, and in several others, health officials recommend against using them in spite of a lack of evidence associating amalgam with health problems of any sort.

I ate Papaya once. I believe that it came from Hawaii. I have to get in shape for when I relocate to Honolulu at the end of the year.

I will take pseudoscientific nonsense and "amok" natural health ahead of many of the general scientific dictates any time!

There are studies that show that keeping to foods that aren't altered in any way leads to better health. Usually they measure it by how long a people remain active.

For instance, a study of Crisco's affect on health, and compare it with Eskimos who ate blubber. Studies of people who eat meat from animals fed naturally to people who eat meat fed with the latest scientific methods. I decided long ago that if something is unaltered it is best. I have always even used wonderful antibiotics only for emergencies, and carefully. Now they say that is the best way to use them.

i knew about most of these, except for the "mixed nuts"...i usually buy raw nuts anyway, but if i ever go to a party or something i'll have to remember not to touch them!

A dr. told me once that Lithium caused my hypothroidism. I take homeopathic supplements along with my synthroid - specifically Apostrum drops 3x a day and Naturathroid. It has helped me a lot along with trying to avoid or limit all the foods that destroy thryoid function (like spinach, cruciferous veggies, soy, etc) basically all the "good" cancer fighting veggies. (I know, it's not fair.) I've discovered this don't eat list from this from Mary J. Shomon...a thyroid advocate i found on about.com. Google her for more info if you like...i found her articles very helpful, i'm on her email list, and even have her book "the thryoid diet." I don't know if it works the same if you have had it removed though.. hope this helps!

Hmmmmm, interesting you say that Cairparavel.i do like a lot of those vegetables....I like soy but I definitely limited that. I have been wanting to take natural supplements as well but until I can get at a dosage safe enough for me to take (Levothyroxine), I'll have to wait. HAVING NO THYROID ABSOLUTELY SUCKS.

I even read an article about this woman who was a health nut and super kale-crazy. She ate raw kale every day in her smoothies and eventually developed thyroid disease because of it. So don't overdo the kale! even if you are already healthy. I could totally backfire on you. Too much of a good thing, is too much sometimes.

It all true, but there's plenty of more products out there that isn't good for consumption at all; everybody is trying to make a fast buck and they will put it out there in the world that is harmful for the environment just so they can live in comfort while others suffers from the effects of their products.

look into eating seasonally...your body is more ready to handle certain foods when you eat them in the season when they naturally grow...
