This is something I've been wondering. I've always heard that the apostles and disciples both have twelve people are they the same? What is there purpose? Where can I read about the them?

Mark 3:13-19, Matthew 10:1-4, Luke 6:12-16 all talk about the main twelve disciples that Jesus also called apostles. Their purpose was to learn the good news of Jesus directly from our messiah and to take and teach it to all else that would hear. They were called apostles because they became teachers of the word, and were also disciples because at first they had to learn the word which is the meaning of a disciple ( a student ).

There are more than the twelve though. The main twelve are just the ones who walked with Jesus. The scriptures clearly state that there are more, and always can be more apostles and disciples.

Luke 10 states that are Lord appointed 70 more, Matthew 28 known as the great commission states that the apostles were sent out to make disciples out of all the nations. And if you read Acts you will see names of other Apostles that were not part of the original 12. Example: Apostle Paul was not of the original twelve, he was appointed later.

Disciples are followers of Christ. Apostles are also disciples, but there are only 12 apostles. Just like if a police chief had 12 policemen, but those policemen are also citizens, but a citizen is not necessarily a policeman. In order to be an apostle you had to be hand picked by Christ Himself- not through someone else, but directly. After Judas died the other apostles voted to replace him with someone else. Yet Paul wasn't even one they had to choose from, and certainly did not meet their qualifications. Matthias was not an apostle just because the others labeled him one. But Christ hand-picked Paul to replace Judas. This is why in many of His letters Paul starts out saying that he is an apostle of Jesus Christ by the Will of God. There are only 12. The 12 apostles from the New Testament, and the 12 sons of Jacob (whose name was changed to Israel) are the 24 elders around the throne of God in Revelation.

the 12 disciples became the 12 Apostles, Apostle means sent one like angel means messenger. An Apostle is like Paul who laid the foundations of the church. But I will tell you that are modern Apostles that lead the church back wehre it needed to be and Luther is one and Smiths wiggles worth is one.

the word 'disciple' means one who follows a discipline...that is they are being instructed and trained in a discipline by a teacher...in this case the discipline is christianity and the teacher is christ...

anyone can be a disciple of christ...jesus had many disciples and is still getting more and more disciples to this day...

the word 'apostle' means 'one who is sent'...that is someone sent out with a specific mission...in the new testament we learn that the distinctive mission of jesus' apostles was to reveal the new covenant mysteries...

because there were only a limited number of new testament mysteries...there are only a limited number of apostles...only sixteen are named in scripture...during their lives they participated in the revelation of the gospel mysteries and now they are in heaven...

CEF here is the spiritual steps of God's ministery....
Sinner is called to repentance, as a sinner starts His walk with God, he becomes a disciple. Disciples FOLLOW God to crucify the old man... Pick up your cross and follow Jesus..... Dissiples follow Jesus all the way to die off all sin and becomes saints. Saints are the DEAD sinner. These are people God sanctified wholly! It means Jesus lead them all the way to be as pure and clean as He is. They are now holy, and washed and forgiven. But! God is not done with them YET! God now has a pure and clean vessel to use AS HE SEES FIT.... God can appoint this vessel for ANY position in God.

These are the MINISTERING positions. the TEACHER positions.... Eph 4:11... And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
You see GOD GIVE some as and some as..... God can now give this pure vessel, Jesus has made pure, ANYTHING He wants that vessel to be. It may an office-bearer as these ones, it might be a deacon and table servant, it might be an elder or a bishop. It might be a healer. It might be a person that discern spirits. As 1 Cor 12 says HE GIVES AS HE WANTS TO WHOM HE WANTS...

So here is those steps... Sinner - Disciple - Saint - God's vessel. Eph 4 is a good chapter to read on this subject. May God's Word be multiplied in us and may God be the King of out hearts. Amen!

Not everyone that claims to be an apostle is an apostle many like the title but a true apostle would rather be called brother.

The gift of apostleship is a gift given by christ through the Holy Spirit an apostle is given a specific task in the body to edify it an apostle is also called a sheliach of Christ , a sheliac usually carries the authority of the one who sent him only in the jewish customs a high priest usually picked twelve disciples under him to become sheliacs and learn all the duties of the temple eventually one would be the high priest successor , a sheliach would also be a delegate of the one who sent Him to oversee the foreign brothers to make sure they are propperly observing torah and all rituals . An apostle is like the source but carries a deeper meaning in the greek apostolos being a sent one an apostle has a difference than a ussual disciple in the sense of commission and carries a wide or just certain duties but in truth all believers are disciples of christ but Christ choses who He will use.

Well luther continually refuted john and james , due to his misalignment of mindset , I and God would say no! . Wigglesworth i studied little about to speak of Him but an apostle would also display at least 3 if not all five of the ministerial giftings apostle prophet , evangalist pastor and teacher . And further he would be commisioned by Christ himself .

Well! Essentially, the apostles are witnesses of Jesus´ and, while reading Revelations, you´ll see them going along with the 12 patriarchs, those of the 12 tribes of Israel. The thing I don´t know is, if Judas or someone else was included to make them a number of 24.

Jesus said, to them: Mat 23:8 You must not be called 'Teacher,' because you are all equal and have only one Teacher.

So, to my mind, I see no hierarchical role. If something changed in church history, afterwards, I believed it was a man-made rule.

I.E.:

Luk 9:46 An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.

Luk 22:24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
Luk 22:25 And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.
Luk 22:26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.

Have a nice day!

I agree with the apostle is simply just doing His duty ,and by teaching the pure unadulterated word in direction of the Holy ghost it is God doing the work , we are but servants the apostleship like any other ministerial role like prophet orevangelist is simply our duty but does not make them higher servant but it is just our duty , an apostle or prophet or whoever it be is aware that they are , but not labeled or asumed by men and usually is allways comfirmed .

But the apostle does carry authority to conduct the work of christ only through the authority and instruction given.

Disciples are students (all true Christians). Apostles are TEACHERS - that office began by Christ to the twelve to lead His Church, which exists still in those whom they passed on their offices to, that succession of apostles. This Apostolic Succession exists still today.

The first Christians had no doubts about how to determine which was the true Church and which doctrines the true teachings of Christ. The test was simple: Just trace the apostolic succession of the claimants.
