Communism was never about lifting up the masses.
All it ever did was to place power in the hands of a few, impoverish everyone else and throw stones at capitalism.
To ever, ever compare communism with compassion for the poor, is truly and without a doubt not only blasphemy of the highest order, its said from the mouth of satan himself.
Educate yourself on the true ideologies of marxism....communism, and their weak sister, socialism before opening an ignorant mouth again and equate communism with ANYTHING christian, or good.
Absolutely disgusting, foolish and cries out the fact there is no Holy Spirit indwellment in any person even in the smallest way suggesting communism has any merit other than pure destruction and death.
I am truly amazed...flabbergasted...astonished that any christian could spout these horrible words.
I need to use mouthwash just imagining it.
Idiot.
And holding a belief about a style of government negates someones Christianity? Atheism isn't even one of the main tents of communism.
Communism (from Latin communis – common, universal) is a socioeconomic system structured upon common ownership of themeans of production and characterized by the absence of classes, money,[SUP][1][/SUP][SUP][2][/SUP] and the state; as well as a social, political andeconomic ideology and movement that aims to establish this social order.[SUP][3
[/SUP][SUP]Someone could eaisly hold communist ideals and still believe in Christ. In fact commujnism isn't far off from what the early church practiced:
Acts 2:42-45New International Version (NIV)
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

I have to disagree. When Karl Marx and Frederik Engels sat down to write the Communist Manifesto, they did believe in raising up the masses. They left out a key ingredient, God. God is the one who seeks to aid the masses. But alas, too often, the secular world thinks that they can do it on their own. Unfortunately, in modern times, the secular world turns to socialists and communists to aid the poor, when they should be turning and helping the Churches which are really doing the work.
Oh, I don't disagree that Marxism leads to tyranny. My point was that Pope Francis' statement is not unfounded.A Marxist would argue that was tried in the poor law parish system and performed poorly (which Dickens reflected in 'Oliver Twist', 'A Christmas Carol', etc... ) but at least the parish system didn't engage in sweeping democide, hard labor prison work camps designed to kill off most of the inmates, etc... that the Marxists did!

There has never been a successful Communist country...
His statement was that Communism as an ideal has stolen the banner of helping the poor in the eyes of the modern world. He also was saying that those who adhere to communism as a way to helping the poor may be closeted Christians. Meaning that all we need do is to reach out and evangelize the youngest communist generation, because it is from Christ where the true almsgivings will come from.I'm still trying to figure out what his points were as the article was such a terribly written mish mash that I couldn't accurately decipher them. Perhaps you can.
What was the pope saying and what were his points?
Again, evangelize the Communist youth with what? The Eucharist? Why doesn't he set the example by proclaiming the Gospel instead of taking political sides? His statement was that Communism as an ideal has stolen the banner of helping the poor in the eyes of the modern world. Communism is what's at the future of human development.
Only if there is no personal God.
