OK so in your mind your fanciful world you believe yourself to be on a earth that is rotating at 1000 mph, counter-clockwise (Northpole), so now do a 180 degree turn and go in the other direction, imagine yourself, or even do this experiment yourself on a treadmill, OK the treadmill is not going 1000 mph hour, but it will do, so you turn round and go in a clockwise direction, and what happens?????
The tread mill is a great analogy! Especially when it is the long one at the airport that you have to share with the other people who got tired of walking. If you stand still, relative to all the others on it, you are still but, compared to the others who decided to walk and stayed off the treadmill you are moving even as you feel like you are still.
It doesn't matter how fast the tread mill goes you and the others can walk forward or backward. the only issue comes when you want to get off the treadmill and it is moving. Then the relative speed you feel comes face to face with the actual speed of the treadmill.
