[h=1]What does the Bible say about feminism? Should a Christian be a feminist?[/h]
Question: "What does the Bible say about feminism? Should a Christian be a feminist?"

Answer:
This question is especially important to Christian women. Does the Word of God address feminism? The modern concept of feminism was not present during the time that the Bible was written, but that does that mean that the Bible has nothing to say on the basic issues of feminism. Even when the Scriptures seem to be silent on something that affects us today, there are eternal principles that speak to the underlying issue.

First, we should define feminism, since the term can have different meanings for different people. Basically, feminism is a philosophy that advocates equal rights for women and men—socially, politically, economically, and in other ways. Early feminists fought for and won suffrage for women. Today’s feminism goes further than demanding equal treatment of men and women, however. Modern feminists fight for language equality (saying “chairperson” instead of “chairman,” even if the person in question is male) and gender equality (redefining femininity and masculinity). The more radical feminists actively seek to overthrow any vestige of male dominance in society, to the point of opposing the biblical roles of husbands and wives, defending abortion on demand, and promoting lesbianism. Radical feminists deny there is any difference between men and women, teaching that any perceived differences between the sexes are due solely to social conditioning.

Modern feminism is a counterfeit solution to the real issue of the inequality of women in a sinful society. Feminism arrogates to itself the right to demand respect and equality in every aspect of life. Feminism is based in arrogance, and it is the opposite of the call to the born-again believer to be a servant. The modern, militant feminists call women to rise up and rebel against the order that God has given to mankind. That brand of feminism seeks to impose humanistic values in direct opposition to the Word of God. Feminism was originally a positive movement, focused on giving women the basic rights God intends for every human being to have. Tragically, feminism now focuses on destroying all distinctions in the roles of men and women.

What then should be a Christian’s view of feminism? A believing woman, who is seeking to obey God and walk in peace and grace, should remember that she has equal access to all spiritual blessings in Christ. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). A believing woman should not allow herself to be used as a pawn in the worldly agenda of the feminist movement. Men and women have a God-given privilege to fulfill the plan He has set for us. Rebellion against that plan and the arrogance that seeks to put self above God’s Word bring difficult consequences. We see those consequences in the destruction of the relationship between husbands and wives, the destruction of the family, and the loss of respect for human life.

“For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world” (1 John 2:16). The principles of the fall are present in this verse. Eve believed the lie that eating the fruit would bring her wisdom. She lusted, and she took something that was forbidden. This is the basis for the modern feminist movement. Women have bought into the lie that feminism will bring them the power and freedom they think they want and deserve. However, the promise is empty, for the premise is rooted in pride—and pride goes before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).

The last decades have seen the rise of a society that is so concerned with political correctness and so sensitive to being “offended” that civility has lost its way. However, this is really nothing new, for there has always been inequality in the world. It is sad but true that artificial barriers have always divided humanity—barriers that have no basis in God’s Word. It is sin in the heart that causes inequality. It is sin that causes men to treat women in ways that are meant to demean or objectify them. And it is sin that seeks counterfeit solutions to counteract these inequalities. The only true cure for inequality is obedience to God’s Word. If men and women would walk in obedience to God’s Word, radical feminism would be seen for what it is, and the harmony that God has ordained between men and women would result.

I am not sure what the point of all of this was, because I don't think I have met a "modern feminist" on this site.

LOL!! Where have you been?? A few have confessed to being feminists ... and that's why I am able to discuss it. It isn't something that I decided to pull out of thin air. It is a subject that most Christian women dread to discuss because many of them know that their relationship is influenced by feminism. Feminism is interwoven into the fabric of today's marriages & relationships. There is no way to avoid it except practice the faith by the book.

I have been right here reading everyone's posts. Whereas some of these ladies may in fact be feminists, I don't believe they would define themselves as the "modern feminist" the piece you posted described. It feels like you are trying to attach an extremist label to all of them where it is not warranted.

Unless you can find a post where I condemn all women as feminists ... then you just "judged" me.

No where in what I wrote did I state that you called all women feminists, but I did write that you seem to be attaching an extremist label to all of them - being feminists. There are varying degrees of feminism, but it seems as all you see is the extreme of it. No judgment.

count me as another who is baffled as to why this has been shared. this is a thread about "the husband's role" and the "evils of feminism" thread is down the hallway, in another forum.

pray tell, what does this have to do with this discussion?

i personally know of two self-identified feminists, and to the best of my knowledge, both have openly rejected what modern feminism espouses.

regardless, neither of which are here. and no one here is preaching about or aligning themselves with feminist ideals.

perhaps when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail?

All I can say is if you find me offensive either scroll down to the next post or put me on ignore. It's just that simple.
fair enough. but to use your own earlier quote, in post #37 in this thread:

I prefer he use neutrality to get his point across. If not, then I will hold him accountable.

i'm mildly baffled as to why you feel entitled to be heard, hold others accountable for their views, yet completely disregard a respectful, thoughtful effort to hold a mirror up to your own views?

i'm sorry, sir, but i am accountable for what i share here, and i believe you are too.

for what it's worth, i hold no ill will towards you, and my observations are not intended to offend -- just honest feedback.

Maybe this bible verse will better explain where I stand with the subject of feminism. ither a woman incorporate the practice in her relationship or she doesn't. There is no middle ground here. My sister has been married for 39 years and she consider herself a feminist but she leave it out of her relationship. IMHO, most women can't because it is simply too tempting & easy.

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." (1John 2:15-16)

I think it is rational and just common sense to discuss the matter on a civil note, and just move on where there is a disagreement. Maybe you just like a fight or war on this day. I am sure there are other posters who can accommodate you.

I fully agree, but laughter generally is not a "civil note." If you want to transition out of a conversation, there are much better, less condescending ways to do so.

ok, that's a great verse. thank you for sharing it.

but i'm not a feminist. i don't see any feminists here *looks around*. no one here is singing the praises of feminism, including me.

i'm a Bible-believing, Christ-following Christian. that's my allegiance. and i really didn't see anyone here who is preaching feminism, as i looked back over the thread.

but i hope that it is an encouragement to you that i am (and many other women on this board) entirely disgusted by what feminism has become, and the role it has played in the home and elsewhere.

one thought: please don't confuse boldness with feminism. they aren't mutually exclusive. conviction of values doesn't mean that i (or any other woman) am running roughshod over men, or want to somehow control, manipulate, dominate, or is somehow buying into the secular view of what marriage. or that i (we) need or want a man for his financial resources. i personally care very little about such things, and i'm not alone in that opinion.

maybe your hatred of feminism colors your ability to recognize some of your sisters here are just as disgusted by sinful, worldly causes such as modern feminism as well as many of the male-centered causes, such as PuaHate, men's right movement and its ilk.

as i said in an earlier post, the fallen world has levied a heavy price upon us, and we are all paying for it. the bible clearly gives us clear instruction on what the family should look like, including both the husband and wife roles.

finally, i know women who have become "feminists" as a reaction to being abused by their husbands. and i'm sure others (both men and women) have been driven to a cause as a reactionary measure. these men and women deserve our prayer, our understanding, and love because they are searching for what is right, typically.

i hope to be used as an encouragement to the lost and disillusioned, not one who pushes them further away from the love and truth of God and His word. to lovingly restore, not condemn. they deserve love and compassion, not ridicule and judgment

because this is the standard we are held to:

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles
proverbs 24:17

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
romans 15:1,2

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
1 john 4:20, 21

Again, there is no middle ground !!! Either you practice the Scriptures in regards to marriage or you practice "feminism" instituted by Satan to destroy marriages. It is just that simple. Many Christian women want to incorporate both and wonder why many of their marriages fall apart. God will not be mock. I have one sister who abides by the Scriptures and her marriage is still growing after 39 years. Have another sister who is completely the opposite and instituted feminism into her marriage and it was a very rocky 7 years and she finally got a divorce but he wouldn't put up with her. Please remember both are feminists and the difference was one didn't incorporate the feminist principles into her marriage while the other did. Women on CC who have an issue with my rhetoric regarding feminism in marriage really should take up the issue with God because He has already states how He feels about it.

what did i say that led you to believe i am somehow standing upon, or supportive of any feminist principles, i.e. middle ground?

i don't know how to be more clear in my emphatic renouncement of modern feminism.

I didn't !! just gave my views. I don't have a problem with your views or anyone's views, regardless how off the wall they may be. What I do have a problem with are insults, attacks that are personal and have absolutely nothing to do with the thread. Some will go as far as bring up issues from others threads and twisting them into personal matters. That's how the thread got derailed. I was on the secular boards for many years and that was a favorite tactic used by women who got frustrated with male posters ... and then play victim. Some things never change. I will have none of that. LOL !!

I think that I took a wrong turn in Albuquerque. Something went wrong, that is for sure, a long time ago.
