This is a technical point as we could ask is Rom 7 picturing Paul as a Christian or before conversion?
The application is universal.

I guess paul just spoke about himself. no one else has that issue.

funny thing though. I suffer with the same war in my life. how about you ?

Why would a legalist argue that Romans 7 is an unsaved or unconverted man? They are arguing against their own philosophy. And we are arguing in their favor, telling them its ok, the Romans 7 man is saved he's just a little.... trying to find a word that is not condescending and that doesn't describe me as well... can't really find one... stubborn?? willfull? stiffnecked?? Isn't it weird that when you describe something you see a little bit of yourself in the description? Isn't it even more weird that what people attempt to teach is what they most desperately need to learn? Blind spots... they can be embarassing.

Isn't the word of God amazing in that a person can teach it incorrectly and the words themselves and the Spirit of God can act and bring about healing and Victory?

We're dumb but we try real hard...

I believe Paul was speaking of himself (as a Christian) in Romans 7 as an example of the struggle all Christians have with the power of sin in their lives. Romans 7 is applicable to all Christians. An unregenerate person would not even know or understand about such struggles....no struggle with the power of sin would mean no salvation because there would be no conviction of sin.

Would you say the unregenerate would have some tinge of conscience when doing wrong or right?

Romans 2:14-15 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

The struggle Paul spoke about in Romans 7 is a Holy Spirit conviction of why Christians struggle...not just a "tinge of conscience when doing wrong or right". It is a true Holy Spirit conviction that reveals to the unregenerate person that he/she is a lost sinner in need of a Savior. The lost don't see themselves as "lost" or "sinners"....so why do they need Christ? Most believe that their "good works" will outweigh the "sin" (bad stuff) and get them to heaven.

Martyn Lloyd Jones had an interesting twist to the 'who' of Rom 7.
He said it was neither Christian or unbeliever but rather the person who was beginning to being awakened through the work of the Holy Spirit and his conscience was for the first time being pricked by the law. He didn't find deliverance from that state until receiving the freedom that comes from Christ's work and the Spirit. So I guess the Rom 7 person was a 'pre-christian' of sorts according to MLJ.
An interesting twist and equally interesting Jones was a Calvinistic Methodist.

I've never heard of a Calvinistic Methodist. I always thought that Methodists were Arminian.

I wonder.. I just can't see paul talking about salvation at all. I see him talking about the struggle with following God at any given point and the war the spirit has with the flesh at that same point.

its an everyday struggle. Not just a pre-salvation struggle.

So how could one fall into to sin? I believe that if I follow the Lord and try to do good I will be saved, though I may accidentley lie or purposely lie if I have sorrow for the deed and ask for forgiveness it's fine, wether or not I am saved for ever I don't know but the safest is to folloe the Lord and not make assumptions.
Would falling into sin be doing any form of sin? As no one is perfect and lives perfectley and everyone sins someway or another some more than others.

6. Does the sinner stay in this condition after Faith comes?
from post #1

Hello gotime
You had said that after faith comes the person is no longer in bondage...I agree if you are talking about the spirit is no longer in bondage but you will have to walk in these bodies of flesh.GOD is strong but we are weak.
That was a good job on this thread/post but I disagreed with this part where I stopped.
the change took place in the spirit and what is flesh is flesh and what is spirit is spirit
A person will remain carnal in the flesh if they do not do what paul said to do.

Romans 12:1-2
king james version(kjv)

1.) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of GOD, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto GOD, which is your reasonable service.[SUP]

2.)
[/SUP]
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by therenewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of GOD.

Why assume that these doctrines are excuses to sin?

It is not right to assume motive in a debate, unless a motive is made plain.

I do not see where this opinion is coming from,
that Christians who believe in eternal security or that we have a sin nature
are believing these things as an excuse to sin.

There is no logical connectivity,
nor has anyone on this thread presented these as an excuse to sin.
Are you sure without any Scripture quote, you justify our confession is false?

Also in humble and humility and in love, beloved gotime, sadly you have become men pleaser, rather than GOD pleaser, in faith sound doctrine knowledge of the New Testament, confessing to that you have posted, to support 'likes' in everything you hear, for you fear your position here in this forum.

Is this respected person witnessing and speaking according to all the replies made regarding this matter, in order to justify our confession is false?

Don't you as still as a respected person in CHRIST, in your 'self' confusion, not witness for your 'self' in one of the replies, that boldly confesses, Romans chapter 7, is also for born again and sanctified/set apart believers, who have been actually in the first place in gifted salvation, have been liberated from sin and death, by being born again of water and of the HOLY SPIRIT, who teaches the New Covenant, the 'Law of the SPIRIT of life', in order to be Kingdom wise people and excel in the righteousness that exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisee's of the Old Testament, as believers now being rooted and as co-heirs and are children, justified representative of the Kingdom of GOD here on earth as the church, who are rooted and abiding to all of CHRIST's sayings, of the established New Covenant, using HIS living words of spirit and life, that is if one, in taught sound doctrine knowledge faith, practice them all the same in action faith and justify themselves as true worshipers of GOD, made by CHRIST as worshipers in spirit and truth?

If you still do not understand my confession of the New Covenant in sound doctrine spiritual Kingdom knowledge, then i am an alien to you and i am not able to help sharing with you, even though they have been explained clearly in simple English Language and not in unknown tongues.

May GOD, the FATHER of our LORD JESUS CHRIS bless you with HIS kindness and peace.

Who is actually making our own discernment and assumption?

I am not sure what you mean?

My position is based on Scripture. Its all there to read.

I stand by what I have said, If you want to site something in particular so that I know what you are referring to please do.

Yes, it sounds like an oxymoron but look it up.
I believe George Whitefield was one as well.
