God telling someone to marry someone who is currently practicing prostitution is wrong. For what fellowship has light with darkness?
I just go by what God told his people at that time in his Torah. And the Torah does not explicitly condemn a man for marrying a woman who engages in prostitution. But if enough witnesses are present when the act takes place, it would certainly condemn that woman.

I believe that marrying a prostitute was a sketchy idea, but not inherently wrong. Gomer was not another man's wife; God was not ordering Hosea to marry a married woman. What Gomer did to Hosea was inherently wrong, though. God knew it would happen, but he is not the one who commanded Gomer to commit adultery. And that is key. It was her choice.

God ordered Hosea to marry her to illustrate a point about his own People prostituting themselves to idols. Idolatry is spiritual adultery/prostitution.

Some other tidbits about this case:

1. The Torah only explicitly commands priests to marry virgins I believe. Hosea is not said to be a priest but a prophet. David was a prophet but was also not a priest just as an example.
2. Our modern standard of morality or cultural taboos have no bearing on the Torah. I know of people who think that eating organ meat from clean animals is somehow not kosher. But what they really mean is eating organs, skin, etc. doesn't sit well with their dietary preferences.
3. It's likely Israel at this point was in such a bad way that no court of law would have ordered prostitutes killed for defiling the land according to the Torah. So it's unlikely that Gomer could have been publicly executed by any godly form of community even if two or more witnesses ever caught Gomer in the act of prostitution. In the absence of sufficient witnesses which the Torah required, I believe God found an opportunity to prove a point to his People by showing her mercy through Hosea.

So you expect God wants me to shut off my moral compass when I read His Word? Can you explain to me the morality behind God's decision to tell Hosea to marry a prostitute?

yes.
we should throw away our own moral compasses and accept God's ethos. He is ontologically God. He is God without our permission. He is God without our understanding. He is, and there is no one like Him, that He should be judged. when we disagree with Him, we're the ones who don't understand aright, not Him. 100%

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him,
and he shall direct thy paths.

(Proverbs 3:5-6)

the "morality" behind God's instruction to Hosea to marry a prostitute is God's grace!!

But God commendeth his love toward us,
in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

(Romans 5:8)

can you name a prostitute or promiscuous woman in the gospels that Jesus didn't show compassion to??
every one of us that make up the bride of Christ are sinners bought by 'sblood. every one of us comes to Him needing to be cleaned, and He washes us each!!

Paul believes that joining to a harlot is wrong.

"Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit." (1 Corinthians 6:15-17).

Jesus view of marriage is about one man and one woman joing together (Where two fleshes become one). In other words, the intimate act between a man and a woman is the joining and coming together as one flesh. If Hosea joined with an harlot, he would be joined to all the other men that she slept with. For sex is only to be within the bounds of marriage and it symbolizes the joining of two into one.

Also, God's law on sexual purity in marriage is also equally important to consider, as well. If a man found a woman to have lied about her virginity, he was not bound to marry her. See, the whole point of marriage was for a woman to be faithful before that marriage so as to dedicated to him. Are their exceptions to the rule. Yes, I believe Rahab is a special case because she repented of her sin. She was not still a practicing prostitute when she married. For explaining that there is an important spiritual message so as to make a point to side step the issue of morality in this situation does not change the morality. It is still wrong if believe God told Hosea to marry a practicing prostitute. For what fellowship does light have with darkness?

Okay, if everyone believes God told Hosea to marry a prostitute (Which is no doubt influenced by their reading of that verse in Modern Translations), then please explain to me the morality behind such an action. I don't see it as being moral and good. Please help explain it to me using the Scriptures of how such a thing can be good.

In other words, I believe people are doing gymnastics with the definition of the words involved and are not really thinking with their heart and or what is morally correct. Explain to me how God telling Hosea to marry a prostitute is a good thing?

For what fellowship does light have with darkness?
It is not influenced by modern translations, it is in the King James Version if you read the whole book in the context that Hosea being a prophet was told by God and he obeyed to go do this as a prophecy against Israel and later generations.

Hosea married Gomer as part of a prophecy against Israel. Gomer represents a whore Israel in the days of Hosea (note the kings Hosea says lived at the time. And all they did is this not written in the books of the Kings and the Chronicles?) I always found significance in how God tells Hosea to name their children Jezreel, Not Pitied, and Not My People. The adulterous wife's lovers are likened to the baalim. Therefore God makes her desolate and naked and send her out weeping into the wilderness until she repent of her whoredoms and return to her husband and he take her back and to tell Not Pitied she has obtained pity and Not My People that you are my people. These prophecies have even come true all ready from Hosea's time to the enslavements by Assyria, Babylon, and Persia, to the coming of the Messiah, the Diaspora, to the return to the land of Zion to even a further bit still even unto the Revelation.

Just by Hosea essentially acting out the prophecy all ready fulfills it and in the grander scheme of things starts the chain of the prophecy about Israel and much history passed and to come all at once. Thus it is Hosea is a true prophet of God.

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

I agree. But that does not answer the morality of the issue of God telling Hosea to marry a practicing prostitute, though.
maybe you should start with how it's different for Hosea to marry a practicing idolater ;)

I understand there is a spiritual message. For one, I do not agree with the spiritual parallel exactly. Israel as God's chosen nation was not unfaithful at it's creation as a nation by God. Second, it still does not explain the moral issue of God telling Hosea to marry a prostitute, either.

Compare Hosea to the story of Noah and how long it took him to find a wife. It is meant to teach a spiritual lesson.

Hosea 1:2 is saying she was merely one woman amongst a group of an idolaterous people because it clarifies that point in the end of the verse. It says a children of whoredoms, and then it says for the land (not Gomer) had committed great whoredoms, departing from the Lord.

I don't think it is funny to poke fun at the goodness or morality of the Lord our God. I believe this is a very serious matter that is not to be taken lightly. People are just blindly accepting that God can do evil and they are unable to explain it. They are hiding behind a spiritual parallel as to their answer and not really answering the moral issue of it.

Folks are still by-passing the moral issue. Telling me to read such and such chapter or story in the Bible is not an explaination as to why God told Hosea to marry a prostitute. It is another smoke screen. Hey! Don't look over here (at the moral issue). Look over here! I have another distraction for you!

In other words, tell it to me straight. You either can explain the moral issue behind God's decision in Him telling Hosea to marry a prostitute or you can't. I have no problem in my reading of Hosea 1:2. There is no moral issue to resolve or to figure out.

sorrow is better than laughter, but a cheerful heart is good medicine.

you haven't explained how it's more ethical for Hosea to marry an idolater (which the law condemns to death)
than to marry a whore (which the law condemns to death).
or why God cannot show mercy to either.

there's a perfectly good Hebrew word for "idolatry" that is not used here in the text.

here's the moral issue:
we don't deserve Grace, but it is poured out to us like water!!

The message is as it is written. Just read it as it is.

Hosea lived in the later days of the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Just a little bit before the captivity by Babylon. It is possible Hosea may have even lived in the early days of the enslavement. Again, how those days were, is this not written in the Books of Kings and Chronicles?

Yes it does explain the moral issue. The moral issue is Hosea obeyed God as a prophet of God and did what he was told directly by God to give a prophecy from God to the people of his time and after. There is no sin in Hosea therefore there is no sin in God therefore the command and prophecy stands forever.

Not to contend with you since you make a good point although...
Even though grace may cover a certain amount of sin.
That doesn't make one less of a sinner...which is a moral issue too.

I don't believe she was an idolater. She was of a people who were labeled as idolaters. Big difference.

Hosea 1:2
"The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for [or because] the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD."

For the last part of the verse explains the context of that fact. In other words, Gomer is a wife of whoredoms (or idolatry) because the land had committed great whoredom (idolatry) that departed from the Lord. This passage does not say that she actually worshiped false idols.

Yet again I point out that the Hebrew word used for this description, number 2183 only means, prostitue or adulterer, it is not a word which can be used for Idols. But if course that is inconvenient for certain people which is why we having such a lengthy reply on this.
