Can you lose the Holy Spirit?

Started a series with one of the ministries I'm involved in last week about the Holy Spirit. Since then it's been on my mind. I know some people say if you turn back to the sinful life then you never really were saved to begin with. I'm curious as to what some of the opinions are about this.

Psalm 51:11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
 
yes you can lose it, David has a very good prayer of repentence.

and my wife not like the verse, like a dog returning to his vomit.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is a promise from God I have not seen where God takes back the HS. However the scripture does teach we can quench the HS and that means to put out or extinguish

Romans 7:15 I want to do what is right, but don't do it. Instead, I do what I hate. Any type of Christian who struggles with a sin and falls back to it can relate to this verse. For some it takes a liftetime's worth of full repentance. How would the spirit wash out on those?

Huh!! If it is not there , it is not there. Translation: It is gone and does not exist.

Is this saying a backslider cannot return? Just curious

As for the Holy Spirit:
Can there be darkness where there is light?

the Spirit moves you want to do what is right.
the flesh, to do what is wrong. that Spirit causes you to hate wrong.

i am never without my Lord, but i need Him every hour. yes, a lifetime!


the answer to Romans 7 is in Romans 8 --

1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

there are many older and many wiser people on the forum than me, but i haven't ever found a time not to need His mercy - if i ever thought i was good enough, it was only because i was ignorant. i see no end to this of my own doing -- i depend on His mercy too to walk in the light.
is that odd? i need Him to set my foot in the right path, and i need Him to first love me to enable me to love as He loves. a single drink from His well and i have never been thirsty - but every day i want more!
He said He would remove hearts of stone and replace them with hearts of flesh -- He didn't ask me to first change my own heart, but to come to Him, stony heart and all. i suppose He had to melt it some even to make me hear Him calling. .

well, the Spirit can be quenched. i don't believe we can be free from sin without Christ, and we certainly can't be forgiven it without Him, and He's the one who gives us the Spirit.

is He merciful? is He faithful to work the changes in us He sent His Spirit to do? can the Potter make a vessel.. :)

if i worried that grace had departed from me, i wouldn't think to much on if it is possible to happen, but put my energy to seeking more of it from the one that gives it.
this very thing happened in my life, and i came to know that it was better still to trust Him at His word to save me than to doubt He is able to do what i am unable on my part to reach.

Chapter and verse so I can look it up. Joel speaks twice of the Spirit in terms of future prophecy.

That is a shaky passage to stand on concerning 'losing the Holy Spirit'. It mentions 'enlightened' but not 'sealed' and therefore the one in question was not one of His Children in the first place.

this again shows no change in nature...still a dog...still eating his own vomit.

Question: "Will the Holy Spirit ever leave a believer?"

Answer: Simply put, no, the Holy Spirit will never leave a true believer. This is revealed in many different passages in the New Testament. For example, Romans 8:9 tells us, “…if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” This verse very clearly states that if someone does not have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, then that person is not saved. Therefore, if the Holy Spirit were to leave a believer, that person would have lost the saving relationship with Christ. Yet this is contrary to what the Bible teaches about the eternal security of Christians. Another verse that speaks to the permanence of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence in the life of believers is John 14:16. Here Jesus states that the Father will give another Helper “to be with you forever.”

The fact that the Holy Spirit will never leave a believer is also seen in Ephesians 1:13-14where believers are said to be “sealed” with the Holy Spirit, “who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” The picture of being sealed with the Spirit is one of ownership and possession. God has promised eternal life to all who believe in Christ, and as a guarantee that He will keep His promise, He has sent the Holy Spirit to indwell the believer until the day of redemption. Similar to making a down payment on a car or a house, God has provided all believers with a down payment on their future relationship with Him by sending the Holy Spirit to indwell them. The fact that all believers are sealed with the Spirit is also seen in 2 Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 4:30.

Prior to Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven, the Holy Spirit had a “come and go” relationship with people. The Holy Spirit indwelt King Saul, but then departed from him (1 Samuel 16:14). Instead, the Spirit came upon David (1 Samuel 16:13). After his adultery with Bathsheba, David feared that the Holy Spirit would be taken from him (Psalm 51:11). The Holy Spirit filled Bezaleel to enable him to produce the items needed for the tabernacle (Exodus 31:2-5), but this is not described as a permanent relationship. All of this changed after Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Beginning on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit began permanently indwelling believers (Acts 2). The permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of God’s promise to always be with us and never forsake us.

While the Holy Spirit will never leave a believer, it is possible for our sin to “quench the Holy Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19) or “grieve the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 4:30). Sin always has consequences in our relationship with God. While our relationship with God is secure in Christ, unconfessed sin in our lives can hinder our fellowship with God and effectively quench the Holy Spirit’s working in our lives. That is why it is so important to confess our sins because God is “faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). So, while the Holy Spirit will never leave us, the benefits and joy of His presence can in fact depart from us.
