I do... but it's not loaded. (I also have no intention of EVER shooting anything. I just like going down to the shooting range and making big holes in defenseless paper targets.)
I'm still torn on the juxtaposition of one's vocation as protector of a family vs. allowing anything to happen and calling it God's will.

I would suggest this, however:
If you have no handgun, it is possible, though extremely unlikely, I would think, that anybody in your family would be killed by an intruder.
On the other hand, if someone breaks into your house and you aim a handgun at them, it is very likely that someone in your family WILL get killed.
Isn’t it safer not to have a handgun?

Oh my gosh! That is extreme twisting of scripture right there!!! Protect yourself.... yes.... but guns?!?! I don't think God would advocate them at all. Honestly, if there is one thing I will never understand about American's is their fascination with owning firearms....I just think its plain sad, especially as Christians. Shouldn't we be trusting in GOD to be our protector and provider? Also, as mentioned above.....

P.S - Incase you think that Im sheltered and live in a safe country - I assure you, that like anywhere, there are the same risks here.
When I lived in the Pacific Islands, we had a home invasion where we lived. Had any of us woken up, and tried to fight back, especially with weapons, we would ourselves have been killed. Thank God we slept through it!

Jesus sent his disciples out while Jesus was with them and they did not take up swords. However when Jesus came to the day He knew of what was to come He did tell His disciples to take up arms even to the point of selling goods to do so.
Also,, I am not one to lean on the Old Testament Too much but in Exodus it gives clear implication to me but, there is still some arguement of translation but, to me it is very clear..
Exodus 22, it gives clear instruction on the home invasion in day and night conditions.. They say that basically if a thief enters your home in the daylight and he sees that you have a means to defend yourself you are to not kill him but, basically run him off..
However if it is at night and you cannot tell what he has and you are scared then you are well within your right to take him out.
Now, there is my real response!! I will admit I hate to quote old Testament. I dont like to use anything that I cannot use in it's entireity but, sometimes I find what I perceive to be good instruction.
There is more in Leviticus but, God went to extremes trying to rescue His people from themselves and that is why I did not mention it here.

Not only is it advisable to have a handgun, but I would have many others as well. I would advise at least getting one shotgun, you will have a much bigger spread and are much more likely to deter your attacker. I would also recommend getting a rifle of some sort. Weather it be a 270 or 30-30 makes not a whole lot of difference in the caliber as long as you sight it in. Then I would recommend getting some form of assault rifle. I've gone with an M-4 bushmaster with a laser dot scope. I find it works well in any situation. If you live in the US you can shave down the firing pin to make it automatic. With this type of arsenal you will never lose a battle.

I agree with you on this. I find it very strange living in America that we are a very religious country but we do not really walk the walk. America has a lot of violence and poverty and for a country as ''Christian" as we supposedly are, one would not expect that. Our culture generally glorifies violence and pretty much ignores the part where Jesus says forget those who persecute you and pray for your enemies. So you are not alone in your confusion!

If everyone has a handgun anyone can shoot each other, if NO ONE has handguns, they have to be slightly more clever to do it.
I see no point in using firearms for "Protection", all a firearm can do is harm or kill. This intruder, if he has a firearm, got it the same way the one wanting to protect himself did... so in my view it just increases the risk of people getting killed and hurt.

I hate guns and violence. And i think its really unfortunate how many people love to own a firearm, and I think that while we should defend ourselves, that sometimes that means putting freakin locks on ur doors and making your HOUSE safe so that you will be too... Also i agree with Joy that we should be trusting in God to be our fortress and protection as David did
