I will give a little back ground
i was a humanist/ relativist/ universalist until I was 33
I have a bachelors from an Ivy League college
i own a business that does millions in volume every year
i have read the bible at least 20 times

Now I take jesus as my savor
a) because it is logical and historical
b) because it saved my marriage and my business

what I can't find as logical or historical is the concept of bible as the only rule of faith

1) the last book in the bible wasn't written until 95ad and the bible wasn't bound and distributed until the 300's and even then only very limited until the advent of the printing press
2) the Christians in Goa India went 1500 years without a New Testament
3) the bible disputes it in 1 Tim 3:15, (2 Thess. 2:15) to name just a few
4) no were in the bible does it say what books belong in the bible
5) no were in the bible does it say clearly the bible is all we need
6) jesus didn't write the bible
7) I can't find any of the first Christians supporting it only contradicting it

The gospels and epistles were in circulation long before the bible was officially compiled. They were commonly copied, shared, and passed between the early churches. Most of the new testament was written within 20 to 40 years following the death of Christ. If the writers were inspired by the Holy Spirit, then its wrong to presume Jesus had no hand in its content or its preservation. Who gave John the revelation of Jesus Christ in Revelation? When religion organized (Roman church), there were some heretics, but the letters canonized were substantiated and authenticated via verification of known or proven authorship. Gnostic gospels were ejected because the authors were unknown, and most were penned +200 years after the fact.

It boils down to either believing the Bible is the infallible, inspired word of God or not.

It's not hard for me considering thousands of men for thousands of years have been trying to prove biblical scripture to be incorrect. No one has been able to do it. The Bible is the worlds largest history book, if it were not the infallible, inspired word of God, someone would have succeeded by now.

If you do believe the Bible then you will know that when Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me," the Holy Bible is the only truth known to mankind.

My point is I believe in the bible 100% because of the change in my life my problem is that the bible doesn't say it is all you need it says you should look at tradition and the church as the versus I stated above say

I agree 100%

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16). Jesus is God (1 Timothy 3:16) and is even called the Word of God (Revelation 19:13). The "Spoken Word of God" (Which existed before the close of Revelation) and the "written Word of God" comes from the "Living Word of God." We know the Bible (i.e. Holy Scriptures) is divine because of the observable evidences that back it up. Most people take it on the observable evidence of their transformation and how God moves and talks to them within their life thru the "Written Word of God." While it is good that we walk by faith in God's Word, that does not mean our faith is contrary to Science, History, and or Evidence of God's divine handiwork. There are many evidences that back up the Bible and make it unlike any other book in human history.

No other Revelation or book compares to it.

Also, Revelation 22:18-19 closes the book on any new words that can be added to the Holy Scriptures, as well. Yes, I am aware that it is talking about the book of Revelation. But I believe it is a "double fulfillment" type passage that also speaks of the Bible because Revelation now exists at the end of our Bibles today and not as a separate manuscript at the time of when John wrote it. To learn more, on that, please read my explanation on #2 (II) on Revelation 22:18-19 for a more complete explanation.

I mean, one of the tactics of the devil has always been to add to the Word of God. He did in the Garden of Eden with Eve and he still does it today. The Catholics and Jehovah's Witnesses have church writings that add to the Word of God. The Mormons and the Muslims have additional books that add to the Word of God. People all over are cropping up out of the wood work with a new vision or dream trying to add to the Word of God.

Hi, Matt. :)

these are interesting reasons...could you elaborate your conversion for us?
(if it's not too annoying to derail your thread)

We are not to live our Christian lives looking to tradition and the church. Many do and many make grave mistakes.

Heb. 12:1-2
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

We are to look to Jesus, the only way is to commune with Him through the Word of God.

God places His word above his name. Psalm 138:2 "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name."

God has given us all we need in His word. Religion is made up of man, with Jesus it is a relationship.

I think the Apostle Paul says it best.
Phil. 3:7-10, But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.

The Bible attests to its own adequacy as the singular rule of faith. Rev. 22:18-19 "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book." This makes the Bible a rather exclusive document but, this cannot be accepted on the basis of logic. This has to be accepted on the basis of faith. Scripture does not call us to logic but to faith.

I think the reasons you give for doubting scripture as scripture are pretty lame.

!. To use the timeline of Revelation is silly, I think. Christ didn't live on earth as a man for 4,000 years at least after Christ first made his appearance as part of creation. That has never been something to use to question the reality of Christ with.

2. For many years after creation scripture wasn't even written down, it was all memory work. Then it was several years after the crucifixion that the last of scripture was written, that had nothing to do with the reality of God as it gives us.

3. You are making scripture say what you believe, not believing what scripture says.

4. There are many things that scripture does not tell us. For instance, scripture says God created the heaven and earth in the beginning, but God doesn't say when that beginning was in our years.

5. The bible not stating that it is all you need does not say a word about that it tells of God.

6; Jesus is God, and the bible does say it is breathed by God.

7. Some of the first Christians were pretty mixed up people like Origen and Clements. We still have mixed up people. That has nothing to do with the reality of the Lord.

Yes the bible says all scripture is inspired by god it doesn't say only scripture is inspired by god or does it outline what books are scripture

No. The names are the same, but they are two different things. However they are connected, though. Think of the written Word like a love letter to man that God (Christ or the Living Word who is Spirit) abides with. In other words, Christ convicts with His Word.

22 For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks look for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ executed on the stake, to the Jews a cause for stumbling but to the nations foolishness. 24 However, to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because a foolish thing of God is wiser than men, and a weak thing of God is stronger than men. (1 Corinthians 1:22-25)

Jesus never said "read the book" he said keep the commandments and have faith

What exactly is you impression of the Bible. Do you believe the Bible to be the inspired revelation of the mind of God or do you see it as simply a product of the human mind and human reason?
