My point is I believe in the bible 100% because of the change in my life my problem is that the bible doesn't say it is all you need it says you should look at tradition and the church as the versus I stated above say
Let us take a look at a few verses which speak about traditions that conflict with the Word of God.
Mark 7:1-13 "Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not,
holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him,
Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of
you hypocrites, as it is written,
This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them,
Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."
It is quite clear what Jesus is saying here. Any tradition held by men that makes the Word or Commandments of God of none effect is wrong.
Galatians 1:13-14 "For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews religion, how that beyond measure
I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: and profited in the Jews religion above many my equals in mine own nation,
being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers."
It sounds like Paul is telling the church at Galatia that his past zeal for the traditions of his fathers led him to persecute and waste the church of God.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 "Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and
hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle."
Paul tells the Thessalonians to hold to the traditions they were taught in word or epistle. As we all know, Paul was taught by Christ Himself.
Galatians 1:11-12 "But I certify you, brethren, that
the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ."
Note Paul mentions "our" epistle in 2 Thessalonians 2:15. Who was teaching the Thessalonians with Paul?
1 Thessalonians 1:1 "
Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ."
2 Thessalonians 1:1 "
Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
In Peter's conclusion to his first epistle, he mentions the character of Silvanus.
1 Peter 5:12 "By
Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand."
In a few of Paul's epistles, he gives a testimony of Timotheus' (Timothy's) character.
1 Corinthians 4:17 "For this cause have I sent unto you
Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, ad I teach every where in eery church."
1 Corinthians 16:10 "Now if
Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for
he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do."
Philipians 1:1 "
Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:"
With all of these character witnesses of these men, what traditions would they be teaching the Thessalonians? Those delivered to them by Jesus Christ of course.
What church is mentioned in the Scripture? The only church we should look to. Christ's church!
Ephesians 1:22 "And hath put all things under his feet, and
gave him [Christ] to be the head over all things to the church,"
Ephesians 5:23 "For the husband is the head of the wife,
even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body."
Colossians 1:18 "And
he [Christ] is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all
things he might have the preeminence."
Conclusion: When the Bible speaks of traditions and the church, the only things it could be speaking of are things created by Christ Himself. If the tradition or the church makes the Commandments/Word of God void, it is false. It is my prayer that the Scriptures can give you comfort on this subject.
