Ive been in such a rut for a long time, id say almost a year now. And I cannot stand it. I pray to God that I will change, that I will wake up and I will be my old self again......but it doesn't seem to happen. Sometimes ill be OK for couple of days doing things that I used to love but then I loose all motivation and disappointment follows. I feel like I don't deserve to be happy for some reason. I just don't know what to do anymore. I want to be better. Any suggestions?

Have you considered the thought that it could be depression? Any life circumstances that are making you feel dragged down?

I've felt this way for a good while as well, at least a few years and it still happens. Having something to do (being a job for me) has helped somewhat with this since it forces one to keep their mind off of simply giving up and whatnot. Change of pace can help if you can do so.

Depression isn't something one should take lightly either, since while it may seem minor at first it can get worse if kept ignored. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or others then seek help immediately.

Self criticism is probably what destructs most while feeling down and depressed and it should be avoided. Try analyzing your shortcomings and see what you could to do improve yourself from them, even if it can be hard to do. If not then seek someone who's able to do so, maybe a good friend or relative, but depending how bad this is then try a professional.

No matter how worthless you feel, you are not. Ultimately, God knows why things happen and why we can be caught up in situations. I'd suggest to try seeking and evaluating yourself with Him and at least acknowledge that you're here for a reason and you're loved and have worth. He'll use the very weakness and turn it into something good.

I agree with JustAnotherUser! If this has gone on for a year, you need to seek medical help. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to recover.

Someone with depression for a year, can recover in a year, with medical help. If a person has depression for two years, it takes five years to recover. If you have depression for five years, untreated, you will have it forever. I know someone who did not get help, because he thought Christians were not supposed to get depressed. 20 years later, he was on two antidepressants, and ten after that he is stable only with the medications.

It doesn't matter what triggered this episode, you need to get help.

And yes, God will help you through this. Please read the Psalms. They are transforming for someone who is going through depression. And that is from personal experience.

Praying you seek help soon!

Sounds like depression to me too. A visit to the doctor should be your next step.

What makes you feel that you don't deserve to be happy? Can you give a specific reason? You might need to look at that. Maybe we could help you.

Agree that professional help is a good idea..........but so would be seeking counseling from your Pastor and having your Congregation praying for you.......Never underestimate the power of prayer, OR the power of God.

I know that bad things happen to people all the time even probably worse then whats happened to me. But lately its just one thing after another and I feel that im the one to blame for it. I am disappointed in myself and until I can fix it all then I think I will be able to be deserving of happiness.... I know I probably sound crazy

I also want to thank you all that have replied. Its hard sometimes to keep that all in. I greatly appreciate the suggestions

Yes, i've battled depression for 24 years. It is part of my personality type and Not something i can willfully control. And you have a lot of the same problems i've always struggled with. Once you begin to understand this and accept it it can make it a bit easier to let yourself feel you are as deserving as anyone else. Because what you're feeling and going through is not your fault, but is something out of your control.
Not that it means you no longer take responsibility, but you can more clearly understand where your responsibility begins and ends. It will help you define and understand your limitations. This is what has happened for me, the more i understood what i why i was feeling how i was, and realizing these feelings are not my fault, and learning that others go through the exact same problems for the same reasons, it made me feel better. Less hard on myself.
And yes, some days are harder than others. Today i may feel ok, not too down on myself, and tomorrow i may hate myself. But how you deal with it, using knowledge, makes the overall struggle easier.
So, i also think you should speak to a professional. And while i am not a professional i am quite experienced on the matter, so if you want to talk about it or ask questions, feel free to send me a message. I'll offer whatever advice i can or just listen. Ok, i usually offer advice, wanted or not haha.

here's my own experience in all this...

when a clinical depression sets in, we tend to sink deeper into darkness
till we can barely remember what light looks like. :(

it's so terribly gradual it can be hard to realize.
any light we do see, we assume to be a train coming at us.

when i was depressed (and didn't know it), i was blessed to know a Christian doctor.
he called me. every. day. he just kept gently suggesting he might be able to help.
and you know? he really did help!

you're likely not thinking clearly right now, sweetheart.
once the neurotransmitters in the brain are sufficiently 'out of whack',
(and yes, that's a clinical term...:) )
they often need outside help being readjusted
.

there's absolutely NO shame in it, either. ♥

i remember reading in a medical journal about 4 years ago
a psychiatrist saying the average high school student today
has the same level of anxiety and depression
a hospitalized psychiatric patient did in 1950.

life is hard, and God is good.
praying you're able to find some help.
we are here for you!

love,
ellie
