Present!!! Well...kinda. Just had a late Thanksgiving with the kids due to the highway being jammed up. We were celebrating today since they were with their mother yesterday. Since, according to my kids, Thanksgiving is all about comparing mom's Thanksgiving meal with dad's the verdict was:

turkey - mine was more moist. even the white meat
rolls - hers was waaaaay better
stuffing - we tied
green bean casserole - I won because she didn't make any. Even if she had, I would have still won because I used two secret weapons: wine and bacon.
sweet potato casserole - I won that one
desserts -a tie.

I got to hear all about her kitchen mishaps. Then I told the kids that they should have helped. They told me that she gets mad at them when they try to help because they "get in the way" (I knew that she was like this and felt bad for bringing it up immediately after having done so.). This was after I had already given them assignments (one was to make the stuffing, the other to assemble one of the casseroles - I had done a lot of prep work due to an out of town music gig.) Sometimes I'm still amazed at our different parenting styles.

About to have dessert. Will be in and out. :D

I missed where you said what your job is? You'll need to train yourself, if you are standing for long periods, to shift around a lot. Bend your knees, shift your weight, do stretches while working. Your feet will adjust, and your body will learn, but it helps to do some deliberate movements to ease the stress on your body. It does get better!

You will get used to this. The prolonged standing always got to me at the beginning of the school year when I was teaching. I got used to it by the second week. Hang in there!

Today I walked around a mall for a good hour.
Pondered life.
Prayed.

Bought yoga pants.
Sat down in one of those kid play areas and pondered again.
Drank a smoothie.
Wondered. Why does my sister have a life and I don't.

Realized I was jealous.
*Does not understand*. and if I wanted a life, would I even have the energy to have one?
Thinking about taking some culinary courses, not sure yet.

Also saw some kids decorating their friends car with pretty words when I left, didn't seem like a good idea. But I hope they learned their lesson afterwards. (The decorators, not the customer).

Also. They don't have any good movies out anymore. they're all kind of creepy and have weird themes. Maybe I'm just weird and notice off patterns, I have no idea. But I'm pretty sure I am dead on about that.
I feel kind of better , I don't know.

yep, what they said--pretty much my sentiments. and also to make sure to wear well-fitting shoes with some support and an insole if you need it. what you were told about making sure they're not pinching or whatever (by zero, i think) is true, too.

but here is another tip evie: blisters come from friction in your shoes, which is why you get them often running. make sure your shoes aren't pinching, but that they fit snugly enough as well, so that they don't move or rub your toes. you should be able to move your toes, but not your foot in the shoe. if they slide at all, they're not snug enough and you WILL often get blisters.

you can fix that sometimes with a nice layer of socks.

oh, my poor toenails/feet were sort of messed up for awhile when i started running, and i didn't know better. i was getting blisters like crazy, especially under my toenails. i think i was missing a few for quite awhile, from my pinky/fourth toes. my solution was to cut the tops off of my running shoes so that my toes weren't hitting the tops of my shoes, which i think caused that. it looked weird, but it was pretty effective.

anyway, that was quite awhile ago, and i finally figured it out, with the right shoes and the right socks.

oh, that toenail info is my tmi for the rest of the year. : D

hmmm, fascinating. i have to admit, it's my hatred of the traditional green bean monstrosity of disgustingness that inspired me to re-create it, since my family always had that nasty thing there, usually passing it past me as much as possible. even the look of it sort of makes me... ok, i'll stop there.

several years ago, i decided to try to re-create a better version of it, with fresh, (baby) haricot vert, bacon, carmelized onions and a a few other things that i can't really remember. i think it had some white balsamic. it was really good, and i ended up giving out my recollection of that experiment. i wish i had written it down.

and there wasn't a single can of campbells soup. : D

i think it's the mixing of that and the texture of canned beans that does me in. ; p i really don't like the weird flavor of the soup--or maybe i just had it too much in earlier means prepared by my mom/grandma, since it was such a staple from the 70s/80s. plus it seems so unnecessary. but i know i'm probably in the minority in saying that. people seem to enjoy tradition.

so how'd you do it?

I steamed the green beans to a nice crispy-but-not-soggy state....sauteed some onion and garlic in olive oil and bacon fat (oh yeah, I cooked bacon for the topping)...threw in some seasoning, I forget what exactly...didn't have fresh mushroom so I used dried (never have used dried mushroom before - I was impressed with the results)...deglazed the onion pan with wine, then added butter and flour for a roux...let that darken a bit because I hate that floury taste, then added some cream and milk...after thickening I added the green beans.

That was the day before's work. It was easy for my daughter to mix it up and throw it in the oven...then add the bacon topping about halfway through the baking process. Very yummy. And no Campbell's soup. That stuff is an abomination. :p

that sounds scrumptious. i have never tried to do anything "cream" or "milk" with green beans. i guess i am afraid it will taste too much like that casserole, but maybe i will next time.

you know what kim? when i come see you, i'll teach you how to make a white sauce. it takes almost no effort, and trust me, you'll never use cambells-cream-of-crappy soup again. ; p

seriously, i know lots of people like it. mostly the texture and some subtle flavors in it are what i object to. and then of course the ease of the alternative. : )

actually, i am pretty sure all of my family has some of that stuff in their pantry too. no big whoop, i still love you. : D

My mom just called me. My dad is going to hopefully have surgery done on Monday. One artery in his heart is entirely blocked, so they want to do a bypass of that one. It depends on how bad the muscle is from when he had his heart attack at age 45. They also want to put stents in.. Thanks to all of you who have prayed for my dad. :)

I love you all too :D, and contrary to popular belief, I've actually had a few adventures of my own in the kitchen, back in the day.

Yup, I've actually made: roux, white sauce, butternut squash ravioli (both pasta and filling from scratch), fudge, stuffed sole, blueberry teacake (though all the blueberries sank to the bottom), ham and asparagus strata, homemade bread, frosting... and a few others I can't remember, as it was a long time ago.

My philosophy has always been that if a person can read, they can cook. I'm not saying they can cook necessarily WELL :), but once upon a time, I had a bit more energy, ambition, and most important of all, someone to cook for.

P.S. I actually hate canned soup. However, my Mom is not a cook and made some casseroles that used canned soups when I was a kid, so sometimes I do have a craving for one of those (tater tot casserole, anyone? :))

P.P.S. Do I get bonus points for knowing what a mirepoix is, as well as "the other" holy trinity? :D

The kicker is, while I don't cook anymore, I still occasionally take sneak peeks at all kinds of cooking shows. 99.9% of the time I'm not interested in what they're making but I like the little tips you pick up along the way.
