Type out lesson for tomorrow's Sunday School class first?

Of course not. Procrastinate first.

I haven't started a thread in a while. Why not? And why not flip the coin to the favorite Christmas song thread? We all have the Christmas song (or songs) that we are particularly fond of.

But after being bombarded by them for even up to TWO FLIPPIN' MONTHS...some of us are ready to punch the next thing in a Santa hat that we see if we hear one more shake of the sleigh bells. But there are even songs that make us feel that way the very first time we hear them in November.

I'll go first. As I did in the Fave thread, I'll throw out both a sacred and secular example.

The stupidest of all sacred Christmas songs is The Drummer Boy. Yeah, I said it. I can think of nothing more inane than the idea of OH THE LITTLE BOY IS PLAYING A DRUM BECAUSE HE COULDN'T BRING A GIFT LIKE THE MAGI!!! The song isn't even centered on Christ, it's centered on the kid. Newsflash, kid: first-century drums in Judea do not sound like "pah-rup-pah-pum pum." Also, you're PLAYING DRUMS FOR A BABY. Parents of infants everywhere applaud you; clearly, this is appropriate behavior. And this is just the LYRICS. Don't even get me started on the banality of the melody. I honestly think the Czechs wrote it as a joke (which is why no one in the Czech Republic will take credit for it), knowing someone from the West would co-opt it and use it. "Look at those American morons! They actually think a Jewish kid playing a snare drum for an infant makes sense!"

Regarding secular Christmas songs...imagine the most joyous, beautiful moment in your life. That stupid George Michael song? It's the exact opposite of that.

New Auld Lang Syne By Dan Fogleberg

Every year they play it with the Christmas music on the radio.... It's about old lovers reuniting in a liquor store .... The only thing remotely about Christmas in the whole song is a line that says " the snow was falling Christmas Eve."

ARGH!!!

This thread has officially pulled my Christmas heart right out!!!

1. I LOVE the 1984 "Do They Know It's Christmas" and loathe every other version I've heard of it.

2. I ADORE the Little Drummer Boy and always get chills over the lyrics, "Then... he smiled at me..." because here was a poor little boy with no money for a gift. It always makes me think of how the only thing we have to offer God is prayer... and usually a very off-tune one that's never quite in sync. But... but... I respect differences of opinion! :D

The one bright Christmas light in the bunch is if you are talking about George Micheal's "Last Christmas", yes, I thoroughly hate that song too! Whew! I was beginning to think I didn't have anything in common with anyone here.

And for my contribution... "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" was THE thing when it first came out sometime when I was in grade school... But they played it so much that now I just cringe even when I hear the first few notes.

As a music lover this is a hard thread to read, because I automatically want to click and hear the songs... nah, no thanks.

There are two Christmas songs I despise. One is "Santa baby." It sounds like when Santa gets there the singer is going to invite him to bed.

The second song I hate is any old christmas song that has been done a thousand times by a thousand different singers/groups, but someone else has to dig it out and record it yet again... and every singer tries to put his own little style into the song, sing it with his own twist. What, you think a thousand different versions of that song isn't enough? Or can you really not find anything better to put on your Christmas album? Gimme a call, I have tons of recommendations for songs.

All I Want for Christmas is you, Mariah Carey.

I did hear Michael Buble sing it and it was much better.

The Christmas shoe song drives me crazy too.

The song about the Christmas shoes is one of my Mom's favorites, when they start singing, I need to buy these shoes, you see there's not much time, I sing it in this real redneck voice and my Mom hates it.

The local mall has church, school, and other local area groups come in to sing the days leading up to Christmas.

One night a group of kids were "singing" Sia's "Chandalier".

Besides being an awful "song", what does it have to do with Christmas? I therefore name it the worst Christmas tune out there.

:: cringe ::

I don't like the Mariah Carey version of "All I want for Christmas" but there are a lot of "Christmas" songs on the radio that don't mention Christmas. I really like Boney M's "Mary's Boy Child" though
