My one big personal beef is when people complain about this, that, or the other, but sit on their duff and do NOTHING to make any contribution. That's one of my biggest pet peeves both here and in real life.

I just feel that if a person has a complaint, they should start doing something about it themselves.

I very rarely see the people with the most negative feedback ever trying do to something positive about it except criticize, which I guess they somehow think is going to "help", and then they wonder why all the threads are the same or no one wants to try posting new threads.

I remember Cristen saying that someone criticized her for writing threads and many of us suggested that person should then start writing their own. I don't think they ever did, which was completely unfair. I don't mind constructive feedback for myself or anyone else, but please, if you're not going to do your part in the work to make it better, why bother saying anything?

Writing a thread or trying a new idea here is often like jumping off a cliff with a lot of "helpful" shoves when no one is supportive of the idea or has nothing to offer by jabs. No wonder some people are probably afraid to post here. I'm really hoping that will change though.

I hold back from writing more threads/posts because I don't want people to be like, "Oh great, there's Seoulsearch... AGAIN!!" which is why I've been trying to write shorter, more upbeat posts. But Cristen is absolutely right--if only a handful of people are willing to say anything, what more can we expect?

Nothing makes me happier here than to see a wide spectrum of respectful posts from a VARIETY of different users. We don't have to agree--that's part of what helps us all learn--but we can disagree in a peaceful manner.

Actually when this thread started I was a bit skeptical. A thread about what kind of threads we want? If we want a thread we start one.
I think for those of us who are natural communicators or post regularly, we often overlook the fact that it's much harder for others to vocalize their feelings. It took me a very long time to realize that a lot of people are interested in the topics but are hesitant to participate. Many don't know how because communication, especially verbally or in written form, is not something they're confident or comfortable with.

Just a few weeks ago I read a post by a very sweet guy who said he loves the more thought-provoking threads but his mechanically-inclined brain was not good with words, so he said he always reads but never posts. I have a friend like that too. He can fix anything. But to actually express himself in words? He'd rather pick up a hammer and smash something--even when he's not angry. I think we may have more users here like that than we realize because of the times there will be 3 regular users reading the forum and 83 guests!!

I also came to realize the some might desperately want a way to participate but feel they have no means. I will never forget a long time ago when I wrote a thread about Men Who Had Survived Sexual Abuse. I was in chat one day and a young guy (about 20 years old) stopped in and said, "Seoulsearch, thanks for the thread," and when I said, "Thank you," he wrote, "Peace out," and left.

I had never seen him anywhere on the forum before and have never seen him since. But I've never forgotten that, which is why I've also tried to create more polls over the years, as a way to try to give more people a voice in the forums.

Speaking of voices... Lynx, I listened to the link you left for Lil in another thread... twice. Your accent is amazing! :)

My voice changes depending on the situation, as does my accent. I have no idea why. Also when I sing a song my voice seems to adopt the accent of the person I heard singing that song. It's weird, I know.

To the topic at hand: I thought if someone wanted to start a conversation he'd just start a thread. Why would someone not? If I hated the thread, and said so, what would it matter? I'm just a nameless person he'll never meet, with an avatar of a cool cat. But I suppose some would care more about what people on a forum thought of them.

Perhaps there could be a person - probably an administrator or moderator, perhaps Banana Pie or 1stillwater - who could actively solicit questions or topics that people want posted, but don't want to post themselves? Maybe a sticky labeled "THREADS YOU ARE AFRAID TO START" with instructions in the thread to PM somebody who would evaluate the topic, decide whether it should be posted and proceed to post the viable ones.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who mentioned this! I like putting a voice to the text (it can help me interpret people's posts a little better), so I love hearing everyone's unique voices, and am always curious on what a certain person sounds like. I always worry that that's creepy. lol (I remember the first time I heard your voice Kim and I was like, oh that's so cool! lol)

I'm this way too! How cool would it be to have a thread where everyone responded with recorded voice messages?
...not that I even have any idea how to do that.
Anyway, that's what I like about chat, the rare times I go in there...putting voices with names and stuff.

SLIGHT EDIT: Change the suggested sticky thread title to "THREADS YOU DON'T WANT TO START YOURSELF." Also, if the person PM's the moderator a topic that has already been hashed out 14 billion times, the moderator could send the person a list of links to threads on that topic, and a polite suggestion to read them first, and then come back if they have not addressed the matter.

For that matter, the moderator in charge of it might keep a few text files with links to threads on certain topics. They'll be at hand in an instant instead of having to Search and compile a list every time someone sends a PM.

Well, I know that mods are already swamped with more than enough work here as it is (demonstrated by a Bible Discussion Forum troll just a few minutes ago), so that's why I suggested that people who wanted help with a thread idea, whether they want to write it themselves or have someone help them (which is why Still mentioned "ghost writers") are welcome to PM us regulars for help.

We could have a vote on whom among we regular chatters would be in charge of the sticky thread and receive the PM's. I know who I'd vote for.

Why is problem-solving and life hacks in the same selection as games and puzzles??

I was thinking along the terms of a sort of a "Coping With Everyday Life And Having Some Fun" category based on past topics... In my own mind, I was lumping things like games people had started (matchmaking, Catherder's Dare game and combine two thread titles game, etc.), along with puzzles and problem-solving threads we've had (Ugly once posted a math problem, if I remember right, and that was a lot of fun to watch people try to come up with the answers), along with "life hacks" such as tips on how to save money. I've read things in those kinds of threads that I still remember and utilize to this day.

I guess when I wrote that "category" I was mashing all those things together, kind of like the "Comics" and "Life" section of the newspaper combined.

You kind of do that when you're writing a 30-answer poll. Go ahead and try it sometime. :) I'm always up for tips from others to see how to do it better... but only when people give me a solid example of their own first so that I know they understand how much of a challenge it can be. :D

I would be willing to help people write new threads. I am not sure how this will work out, but I want to volunteer for this idea. :)
