Hi all,

I just had a question about missionary work.

I'm 17 years old, graduated from high school, and I'd like to travel abroad, serve God, and explore the world before my life becomes a career/university life.

Do you know of any services that take on Volunteers for free? I live in Canada.

Are you interested in a certain language, country? Has God put a certain place on your mind. I would recommend going to the place where you would like to learn the language or see if there are certain areas or cultures you have dreamed of exploring. God puts those desires on your heart. I am currently in Asia, and God put the Chinese language and culture on my heart. This covers many cultures, nations, territories, and Islands.

There are short term trips everywhere but I would recommend at your age, studying abroad with a safe company. That way, they will lead you to the right accomodations, help you with your Visa and help you learn the culture and best crash course for the language. StudyAbroad has programs to place you all over the world. Start researching now!!!! You are at a good point in your life to do this. I warn you! You may not go back to Canada.

Ps.... I took one volunteer trip fell in love with China, and within months I was back and working through Asia.

Have you tried YWAM (Youth With A Mission)? I have friends that have done mission work and discipleship training with them and have said they're an exceptional organisation. I could be wrong, but I think you have to get financial and prayer support from your church community to join. Maybe check out their site if you're interested.

I suggest an enlistment in the Armed Forces. I believe that the military may take volunteers. At the very least it would get you out of the house. The freedoms that we enjoy are paid by those willing to serve God and country to protect the homeland.

I would never advise going with an organized church unless God strongly saw you with them. I see many professing American 'missionaries' who carry this title and are false, trying to spread a creepy false American gospel here. If you are a true missionary you will not call yourself that.

Wow. What's your problem? Someone seems to have upset your applecart.

The "Gospel" many people bring under the banner of Christianity is not good... Many organizations are "nON-profits"
These n-ONprofits go around preaching a gospel like the prosperity gospel... They get converts to join and they tax those people with little to nothing and call it tithe, then they have other people give money to "help" the missionaries...

My opinion is, If God calls you to be a missionary, NOTHING can stop you... You don't need money or food or shelter... You have the creator :)

I am not saying that all organizations are bad... But people from other countries have very very sour tastes in their mouths from this...

It's pretty disingenuous though, to write off most or even many because of that. For example, YWAM are huge but they preach the true gospel, not the prosperity gospel. Also, it's not wrong to be trained to be a missionary. All callings need some form of training, it doesn't invalidate them.
