I wanted to put this in the young adults forum rather than the singles because I wanted to also have people who are married to respond, but I want a man who is willing to take control and lead the household, I want a man who will stand up to me, yet is also willing to take my feelings into consideration. The reason why I entitled it if I was asking for trouble, was because I know many people who ask for this, end up in abusive relationships. This is food for thought.

I don't think it's asking for trouble. I think the man should lead but he needs to lead God's way. He needs to look to the Lord for support and help. Listen to this song. I really like the lyrics and the way it explains it all. The children look at the mother, the mother at the father and the father at the Lord for guidance. I mean yes, a mother can look at the Lord and the children at the father but that is the general sense of the family unit. I say as long as you marry a Christian man that loves God more than anything, he will not hurt you.

Also I suggest you read "Lady in Waiting" by Jackie Kendall and Debby Jones. It has helped me discover what it means to be a woman of God and how to prepare for the future, whether it be as a married woman serving the Lord or as a single woman serving the Lord. :)

Sorry, I'm not married but I'll be honest and say I don't believe you are asking for trouble. Its sad that women who are looking for a man who will lead, stand up for her and be sensitive to her at the same time end up in abusive relationships.

That isn't too much to ask for at all and isn't even fairy tale love. Its what God would want a husband to be like, strong leader and a sensitive lover at the same time for his wife.
Just be honest and genuine when looking for the right guy. Don't set unreasonable standards or look for a relationship that isn't reality because its then when your hopes crash down and you may end up in the wrong place with the wrong person.

I get the question. Because it is tricky. The same wants you have for a good man can also describe abusive men.
I think the distinction is in how considerate the man is of you, and those around you. It's like the old concept of going on a date and observing how the man treats the waiter, cashier, etc... Is he demanding, complaining, treat them poorly? If something goes wrong with his order does he blow his top, or seem to be trying very hard to not explode? Does he talk down to people?

Another thing to look for is lets say he gets mad and says some things not too nice to you. We can all have bad days or make mistakes. And many will come back and apologize. The key is does he repeat the behavior or does it keep happening? Does he blame you (or the person who is the aim of his anger) for 'making' him mad or does he own his anger as his problem?

When he leads does he lead with demands, or using scripture to guilt or sway you into doing what he says? Does him being the leader mean to him that he has to always be in charge of everything?

Really the best thing to do is study up on the behaviors and red flags of abusive men. Then, when in a relationship, be honest with yourself about what you see. It's easy for a woman to see problems and ignore them, or make excuses. Or to just think 'this could never happen to me'. Because it can happen to anyone, potentially, male or female.

The issue with the strong leadership role is that most guys who adapt to such roles easily or desire them are 'alpha males'. Many (not all) alpha males are strong leaders. Strong work ethics. Are more athletic and can therefore make you feel more protected from any physical harm.
The flip side to alpha males is that they also tend to have less emotions or harder time showing them, leaving you having a lack in your relationship. Because of their leadership tendencies and their physical attributes (things that can be attributed to higher testosterone levels) they puts them at a higher risk of becoming abusive, either verbally or physically. 'Alpha males' that encompass all the positives of their kind and also the level of sensitivity women seek is not common. It's possible but not common.

It also helps to consider that not all leadership is obvious. Sometimes the best leaders are not those that step into the position willingly or eagerly, but those that lead as an equal. I am not an alpha male type, so i don't naturally take to leadership, yet there was a situation years ago where an opportunity came up for a group of us to need a leader. People were insistent i lead. After some debate i reluctantly accepted the role as 'technically' i'm in charge, just because we need that spot filled, but that a few of us were actually leaders. They all agreed, yet in the end i was always placed as the decision maker. I was able to lead when it was needed, but i did not lift myself up as the leader. People became very loyal to me and willing to do anything i asked of them.
So don't presume that a man that doesn't fit your idea of a leader can't lead in another manner. Ideally get to know a man before crossing him off your list, just because he doesn't seem to fit what you're looking for at first glance.
And remember, a good leader is also someone that knows when to delegate. Not need to do everything themselves.

Also, there are married people who use Singles as well. And a number of singles who are divorced or widowed. Some of which came from abusive relationships in the past, whether dating or marriage.

You're still young, focus on your life and enjoy the little things that are around you at the very moment. When your time for love comes, it will come! But for now keep locked on your personal priorities and endeavors and your eyes focused on Jesus to get you to where you need to go. He won't fail you!

I am sure Adam and eve had other bad days after they sin yet Adam was the head and they are saved it is the imperfections in the relationships that makes it perfect
Men are to lead yet be equal
just like Christ and the church

You are young too! I just have always wondered about it. I have kept hearing since the women's movement, women generally have to have control and was curious if there were anybody that agreed with my stance on men being head of the home and the family. God has not failed me so far and I know that he will never leave me or forsake me. Since I was about sixteen, I began praying for the man that God has in store for me, whenever that time may come, that God will prepare his heart and he will prepare me for him.

Reads to me like you want a man who will be a true and definite leader, yet someone who will have a gentle, compassionate, loving, nurturing side that is truly interested in & concerned about you, your feelings, and your well-being.

If a man is truly the way we are attempting to describe, the relationship shouldn't be abusive.

I'm impressed that a early 20's gal feels this way about the ideal husband.

If there was something about your description I'd change, it's the part about him standing up to you. I'm guessing you mean that you want a man that will challenge you to being a better person. In challenging you, he'll probably have to point out your flaws and encourage you as you strive to overcome them.

:)

People end up in abusive relationships for the opposite reasons. The man is not a leader, just a brute tyrant. Leadership requires the traits you mentioned - a sense of authority while also taking the needs/desires of another into consideration. What Christ is to us is how we (men) should be to our wives. Leadership is the utmost sacrifice... many men are power-hungry because their view of leadership is warped.

So anyway, I'm not married, but I think you are on the right track with your criteria, sister. ;) Thanks for posting it because it serves as a reminder for what we who are not leaders should aim for.

I just want a man that will deliver Chinese food right now. I don't think that is asking for trouble.

I agree with what JonahLynx said; it sounds like you have apt criteria for a leader of a man, cmarieh.

Hi cmariah, My sister has been in a bad relationship with someone and been abusive to her. She broke up with him finally she was 18 He was 19. She then decided to walk with God she started going to college and got a.nurse degree and been working a lot and one day a man came to her life who she known since Jr High they been good friends and he himself has a relationship with Jesus. He prayed for her for a long time and finally a year later He asked her to marry Him. God knew what plans He had for my sister. Now they have 4 kids and she owns a clothing company ( she had decided to be a stay home mom and works at home) and her hubby works at a paper company. :)

You aren´t asking for troubles, but answers. :o

As a divirced one who dislikes a controling or leading woman, i acn share, without fear, the best is having someone to walk WITH, side by side (not leading and certainly not needed to be pulled to move on).

Many of those who get divorced faced it because one of the spouse wants to "lead" and the other is unwilling to be led (Happily you said you want to be led) But, since you said "you want your feelings be observed into considerations", I hope you never start to pull the string or robes to move him other place.

I rather chose Amos 3:3

Really this is how my marriage works. It is kinda the Biblical template for marriage IMO. A husband is suppose to work like a president and a wife is supposed to be like his entire cabinet of advisers and vice president. My wife and I have a fantastic relationship and just got done running a small marriage group through our church with the "laugh your way to a better marriage" curriculum.

The problem with abusive men in relationships is that they run their relationship as if they were a dictator instead of a president.

It is natural for you to desire the kind of man you desire. It is how most women are wired despite what bra-burning feminists will tell you.

Just be cautious to distinguish a man who is like this through love rather than a man who is like this through ferocity/aggression/entitlement.

I don't "expect" my wife to cook me dinner when we get home from work. But I am incredibly grateful that she does :)

When you say you want a man to stand up to you, does this mean you want a man that will oppose you?

If so then it is a simple fix that all you need strive for is a man to stand up with you and you with him.

I know what you mean, I sorta want the same thing. I have a strong personality sometimes and can be stubborn and I want want to let the guy be the head of the relationship. Maybe it's not just them stepping up, but he being willing to step down too.
