I was twelve years old and it was summer and I was a kid and I was suppose to be enjoying my time off from the rigors of learning my ABC's but my mom had other plans for me. We lived in an area that had a prevalence of berry farms and that year there was an abundant crop and a dearth of crop pickers and our neighbor had all these raspberries that needed picking so I with my mothers blessings became a reluctant berry picker at a wage of 5 cents a pound.
For the first few days of picking the weather was nice and the berries tasted good but then came a rainy Saturday and the berries didn't stop growing on Saturday and I didn't know too much about which day of the week was the Sabbath but I did know that there were good kids shows on TV Saturday morning such as Rin Tin Tin, Fury, and Lassie and my mom and dad went some where where that morning so I somehow ended up on the couch in front of the TV instead of in the berry patch.
I had been watching TV for maybe half an hour and not feeling too badly about missing work when the windows started shaking and I found myself sprawled on the floor. I had heard stories about such events and although I never had experienced an earthquake before I decided it might be a bit safer in the berry patch so I skedaddled it off to work.
