And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
(Colossians 2:13-19)
abolished? no.
a law for me to judge or be judged by? no.
Emmanuel has come. He is the substance.
Dear posthuman, it seems that you're completely unaware that besides the weekly Sabbath, there were other sabbaths which were observed in conjunction with feasts. These sabbaths were shadow of Christ and they foretold the rest from the bondage of sin that we would receive through the sacrifice of the Lamb of God.
For the sake of the argument, let's examine what Paul is talking about in the passage that you cited.
1. He's talking to gentile christians (dead in trespasses and uncircumcision of flesh).
2. God forgave ALL of their sins with ONE sacrifice (Christ's sacrifice)
3. God cancelled the record of the trespasses that were against them with legal demands. Speaking in secular terms, it's like having crimes on your record, and the judge makes you do community service for these to be expunged, while others can't. But through Christ, God the judge has erased that list of crimes that was against and would accuse us on the final day. ALL of our sins have been expunged. I capitalize 'ALL' because we're going to come back to it.
4. That list of crimes (trespasses) have been nailed to the cross and rulers and authorities can no longer accuse us.
5. THEREFORE (this words implies that there is a connection between what he just said and what he's about to say) let no one pass judgement on you in question of food and drink, feast, or sabbath days; these are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is Christ.
Very well, let's now analyze the 5th point and clearly you'll see that Paul is not making reference to the 4th commandment. Going back to Leviticus 23, we'll read about these: food, drink, feasts, and sabbath days, and how these are simply shadow of the true substance, Jesus. I'll only quote some of them since there are too many, all in the same chapter.
Leviticus 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the
feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord; seven days ye must eat
unleavened bread.
Leviticus 23:13 And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the Lord for a sweet savor; and the
drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.
Leviticus 23:27-29 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord. And
you shall do no work on that same day: for it is day of atonement...
Leviticus 23:32 It shall be unto you a
sabbath rest, and ye shall afflict your souls...
Only by reading and understanding these passages can we know what Paul is talking about in Colossians 2. The Israelites had to perform these rituals every year for the forgiveness of their sins over and over, while in Christ, ALL of our sins are forgiven (past, present, future) without having to sacrifice Himself over and over. That's why Paul compares the complete atonement in Christ as I listed on the 3rd point, with the ceremonies performed before Christ's sacrifice.
All in all, Paul is NOT talking about the 4th commandment, but merely about the yearly sabbaths. We don't need to keep observing these along with the feasts, drinks, and foods since the real substance has come and all of our sins have been forgiven.
The passage that you quoted does not say what you think it says. Consider that if you're not keeping the Sabbath holy, you're living in disobedience.
With love in Jesus.
