We all got a momma, whether biological, adopted, alive or not. And usually Momma has some good advice she learned along the way that she has taught us. What has your momma taught you?

After I locked my key in the car and had to get a locksmith (on a freeway exit, and he was eating breakfast at the local diner, and I had to wait for him to finish...) my momma taught me to get a copy and keep it in my wallet. I can't count the number of times this has saved my locked-out self.

Momma taught me when I put a trash bag in the trash can, wrap it around the edge, gather up the loose bag, put my thumb in it and spin the can. When it is tight, tuck the knot under the tight bag. It will not fall in. Ever. I use this trick every day at work. My bags don't fall in, no matter how many customers put how much trash in.

My momma taught me to eat healthy, to listen to what my body needs rather than what my mouth wants. Much of your health after 30 depends on what you put in your body before you were 20. I have better health than some people ten years my junior. And that's just because I'm only 36... there's not a lot of time for people younger than I to have health problems yet. I fully expect to be more healthy than some people 30 years my junior when I'm 20 years older.

My momma taught me how to listen to an animal and learn its language. All animals have certain actions that mean certain things, and when you learn what they are you can tell an animal "I am a friend" in a way he will understand. I've been places where a dog will let me pet him, or a cat will curl up in my lap, and the owners are saying, "Wow, he never does that with strangers!" Well... I'm not a stranger. I done told the animal I'm his friend.

I think I have a cool momma. And when she was subbing at the local school and happened to be sub in my geography class, my whole class agreed she was the coolest sub ever. :)

Weeeeell... if you've just sprained your ankle that might not be the best time. =^.^= But yeah, my momma had her Steve Camp albums we liked to hear.

My momma taught me that if you're trying to turn left at a red light and there's no break in traffic from the other direction, edge up to the middle of the intersection. When the light turns yellow and then red they'll have to let you through before traffic from the sides can go. It's kind of cheating... but it works.

so, your "momma" taught you to break the law? ; p

also...

my favorite phrase that my mom taught me--although i don't get nearly enough mileage out of it:

it's always a woman's prerogative to change her mind.

My momma taught me:

We don't always get what we want.

Things are in the place you left them (unless momma came through and cleaned).

Don't buy it if you can't afford it. (and don't believe the seller when he tells you that you can afford it).

Lynx, I'm having a brain block. How do you put your thumb in the loose part of the bag and then spin the entire can around? For some reason I can't get a visual on this, and I want to because it sounds like a handy trick. All I ever do is just tie the loose edge in a knot.

My momma taught me how to clean a toilet, inside and out, by hand, with a washcloth, Bon Ami cleanser (a mild abrasive powder) and a toothbrush.

Normally, I use a bowl brush with a handle. But occasionally, for purposes of seasonally thorough cleaning, I go the old-fashioned route (and wear rubber gloves.)

Never marry someone who refuses to clean a toilet or thinks they're too good to do it.

Er... sorry. I got this confused with the "Ten People You Should Never Marry" thread.

That loose part of the trash bag that you would tie in a knot, gather it up and wrap it around your thumb. Then tilt the can on one corner, use your thumb and the corner of the can as the pivot points and spin the can so that the bag tightens around your thumb and makes a hard knot. Then pull your thumb out and tuck that knot under the edge of the now-really-tight bag.

My momma taught me to read when I was about three and a half. I think it was in self defence so I would stop bugging her to read to me. Mom never believed in TV as babysitter, so I played outside, read books, etc. You know, the way kids used to do.

My momma taught me if something is important you make the time. Like when she found out what the school system was trying to shove at us, she made the time for the next seven years to homeschool us. She made the time to take us on field trips too.

Speaking of which, the Memphis Children's Hands-On Museum is incredibly cool. Just for the record.

My mom taught me all about men - what they are all about, their agenda etc. My mom wasn't/isn't a Christian so I guess she was only up against the wolves.
