The Cult of “Selfy

The current fad of taking a ‘selfy’ is said to be taking ones’ own photo at an event for ‘memories’. Actually it is nothing of the sort but rather a ritual of the old cult of narcissism and those who participate in it continually show their brain dead herd mentality. People seem to believe that the ‘selfy’ is a recent trend made popular by celebrities, this is not true and it actually goes back to Victorian times in Europe and USA (approximately 1885 – 1905).

The trend back then was if a child died in a family, then a family ‘portrait’ was to be done before the child was buried. The portraits for the most part were to compel the siblings of the deceased to be photographed with their dead brother/sister. Even worse the deceased were made to look ‘alive’ by means of wooden supports on their back so as to make them ‘stand up’ – much in the way cardboard cut outs are.

One child may have been deceased, but you can see in the eyes of the siblings that something had died in them too because they had been forced to participate in this – it was the death of their innocence. For the parents who did the forcing it was their dignity and for the photographers who took money for this, it was their soul.

From World War 2 there are plenty of ‘selfies’ from the Axis forces who murdered civilians and then proceeded to be photographed posing with the people they just murdered, much in the way ‘big game’ hunters pose for photos with the animals they just killed. And as film/photography technology started to be more available to the public, the advent of ‘snuff’ porn came to be.

Now on to this day…. We have serial killer Daniela Poggiali who has killed 38 people, (Though it’s suspected she killed close to 100) residents in a nursing home and proceeded to take ‘selfies’ with them. There is also Blaze Binder who also worked in a nursing home who took ‘selfies’ with those who were dead or dying, she describes herself as a ‘soul stealer’ (Binder boasted she is a Satanist). In both cases I suspect they did not act on their own solely. And now we have Maxwell Morton who killed a classmate and then proceeded to take a ‘selfy’ and post it on Snapchat. Also add in what Islamic State does, we see that none of these things are to do with reminiscing but are souvenirs for sociopaths, psychopaths and other narcissists.

We see it in everyday occurrence, example if someone is hit by a car and 10 people happen to be present then usually 3 people will call an ambulance and police, 3 people will stand by expecting someone else to do something about it, 1 person will ring a friend with “Like wow dude guess what I just saw! Gnarly dude!” …. and the other 3 will be taking ‘selfies’.

And it’s not just limited to the average halfwit; during the funeral of Nelson Mandela we had the spectacle of national leaders taking ‘selfies’. Nothing to do with honour, respect and memories but rather a souvenir of arrogance. Purely physical souvenirs of purely physical events as far as the ‘photographers’ are concerned. And quite correct too as sociopaths have no soul, psychopaths have no logic and narcissists love pictures of themselves.

You may disagree with everything I’ve written, that’s your choice. You may think that self worship is the way to go and you may be wishing…. “Like wow man! I really am dying in get in a viral selfy!” Be careful what you wish for…. The next Maxwell Morton might just have a spot for you on Snapchat.

Even better if you think you’re made from stern stuff, look up ‘Victorian era dead child portraits’ or Daniela Poggiali or even Blaze Binder.

Is this the sort of world you want to live in?

I think you're on a strange train. You, yourself, are boasting an "icon" as your avatar, which is little more than a "selfie".

Romans 14:12 .) So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
13 .) Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.
14 .) I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

Not buying this. The whole 'because a few people who did wrong did something that makes the thing wrong' isn't logical.
And to claim that everyone who has ever taken a selfie but is being narcissistic condemns a lot of people you have never met, just because you made a broad statement.

And the point another poster made wasn't that you were calling yourself an icon, but that your own avatar, in essence, is a selfie.

I believe you just may be in passing out such a leaflet. Be careful: you can't throw dirt at others without losing ground.

I don't see the point of making this handout. If you're trying to
change the world ... give them the gospel. That's the only hope
for the fallen human race. Telling people they are self-centered
and sinful is not anything they don't already know, if they are
honest about it. Telling them Christ paid the penalty for sin, and
has opened the door to Heaven for all who believe in Him, is the
good news they need to hear, understand, and believe.

If this is going to be a gospel tract, with a gospel
message at the end, the selfie cult idea might be
OK as a lead in, and as an example of sinfulness
and the need for a solution to the sin problem.
But I would keep that part short and quickly get
to the point of the gospel message. Most people
won't take the time to read a long handout especially
if it seems to be judgmental. That's not good news.

No I did not say that, I just pointed out that selfies are not genuine memories but rather souvenirs.
If something really means something to someone then they will remember it.

And the point another poster made wasn't that you were calling yourself an icon, but that your own avatar, in essence, is a selfie.
No it is not a selfy, it is an icon of St. Joaquim the father of the Virgin Mary.
I never met him, so I have no memory of him but I do feel that he should not simply be discarded from history. And the icon painting was not a selfy by himself on his own behalf.

I believe you just may be in passing out such a leaflet. Be careful: you can't throw dirt at others without losing ground.
This is a dirty war

But now dishonesty is a virtue, and as most people take whatever is on TV as gospel then are we surprised they act out in such a manner?
And it shows... serial killers, pedophiles and other sexual perverts are now accepted as the 'average run of the mill' criminals.

Telling them Christ paid the penalty for sin,and has opened the door to Heaven for all who believe in Him, is the good news they need to hear, understand, and believe.
And most of them will tell you to get stuffed.
Why bother reading the Bible when you can spend that time hustling a dollar?

I only posted one side in the OP

Fact is in western nations people cannot accept responsibility for their own actions because they have been mollycoddled like spoiled children. It is only when they get a kick up the backside that they are forced to confront what is happening in their societies.
As long as they think 'bad stuff only happens to other people because they are losers and I'm entitled' then can we expect anything to change?

Gee, Leon, it's a shame you weren't alive 2,000 years ago so you could have told Jesus how He had it all wrong and was doing everything backward with all that soft "love" stuff.

FYI, most people spell the word "selfie" not "selfy."

If I go to the VA to get an X-Ray of my heart, would that be considered a "selfie" of me 'n' Jesus?

That was all interesting information, I didnt make the connections to the historical information and our current day selfies. As for selfies being a form of narcissim, I think on logical grounds they mostly are. But do I want to live in a selfie world? Yes, yes I do.

Well I think what you said was very well thought out, and if you can see that about yourself to then it wont hurt so much when people react negatively to your ideas.

The information is interesting. When you apply blanket ad hominems to your leaflet, however, people will take umbrage to it. And rightly so.

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
