John chapter 13
[21] When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
[22] Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
[23] Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
[24] Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
[25] He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
[26] Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
[27] And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
[28] Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
[29] For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
[30] He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
[31] Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
[32] If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
[33] Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
[34] A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
[35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
[36] Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
[37] Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
[38] Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
John chapter 14
[1] Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
[2] In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
[3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
[4] And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
[5] Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
[6] Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
[7] If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
[8] Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
[9] Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
[10] Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
[11] Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
[12] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
First of all, who was Jesus speaking to here? Well, this conversation took place at the Last Supper which Jesus had with His twelve disciples and one of them, Judas Iscariot, had already left after having received the sop from Jesus (John 13:26-30). IOW, CONTEXTUALLY, Jesus was speaking to the remaining eleven disciples.
Secondly, contrary to popular opinion, the "Father's house" is not heaven. In fact, Jesus described the "Father's house" earlier in this same gospel of John when He said:
John chapter 2
[13] And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
[14] And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
[15] And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
[16] And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
[17] And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
According to Jesus, "my Father's house" is the temple in Jerusalem. I'll come back to this in a moment, but just keep that in mind.
Thirdly, as Jesus had previously "said unto the Jews: Whither I go, ye cannot come" (John 7:34, 36, 8:21-22), so was He now saying the same to His eleven disciples (John 13:33). Where, then, was Jesus "going"? Well, He was "going unto His Father" (John 14:12) and unlike the unbelieving Jews who would never spend any time in heaven which is where the Father was at that time, Peter and the others were given an assurance of some time in heaven when Jesus said:
"Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards." (John 13:36)
Although Peter and the other ten disciples weren't going to immediately follow Jesus to the Father in heaven, they all would eventually follow Him there in that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (II Corinthians 5:8). IOW, when they would all eventually die, their bodies would be buried, but their spirits would go to be "with the Lord" in heaven. Here's the thing, though:
Nowhere and I mean NOWHERE in scripture is it taught that heaven is the FINAL DESTINATION for Christians. No, heaven is merely an intermediary place for departed righteous spirits/souls until the time comes that Christ returns to establish the kingdom of God RIGHT HERE ON EARTH. IOW, the Bible speaks repeatedly of "the kingdom OF heaven" as the Christian's final destination, but not of "the kingdom IN heaven" as the Christian's final destination. Jesus taught us to pray:
"Thy kingdom COME. Thy will be done IN EARTH as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6:10)
Again, "the kingdom OF heaven" is COMING TO THIS EARTH. In fact, Jesus had just finished saying:
Matthew chapter 5
[3] Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4] Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
[5] Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Again, there is a "kingdom OF heaven", BUT "the meek shall inherit THE EARTH" because that is where "the kingdom OF heaven" is COMING TO at Christ's return:
"But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace." (Psalm 37:11)
Again:
Revelation chapter 5
[9] And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
[10] And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Etc., etc., etc.
Anyhow, Jesus told His remaining eleven disciples to whom He was actually speaking that He was going back to His Father in heaven to prepare a place for the eleven in His "Father's house" that where He was they might be also. Here's the important factor which is generally overlooked, though:
John chapter 14
[2] In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
[3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
IOW, it wasn't until the time that Jesus "COMES AGAIN" that this promise will be fulfilled. Well, what does that mean? Where will Christ be when He "comes again"? Will He be in heaven or RIGHT HERE ON EARTH? Friends, where Christ is going to be when He "comes again" is precisely where "His Father's house" is. Again, when a Christian dies, their spirit goes to be with the Lord, BUT they don't get a glorified body until the time of Christ's return:
I Thessalonians chapter 4
[13] But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
[14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
[15] For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
[16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
[17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
[18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
At Christ's second coming FROM HEAVEN, He will "bring them which sleep in Jesus with Him". Again, the departed spirits of Christians are presently in heaven with Jesus, BUT they do not presently have their glorified bodies and they will not receive them until the time of Christ's second coming when He brings them BACK TO EARTH with Him. IOW, seeing how the eleven to whom Jesus was actually speaking in John chapter 14 presently have no glorified bodies in heaven, why would they allegedly need "mansions" (a HORRIBLE translation) to live in? Friends, we get our glorified bodies at Christ's return BECAUSE WE'LL NEED THEM TO ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD RIGHT HERE ON EARTH:
I Corinthians chapter 15
[50] Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
[51] Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
[52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
[53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
[54] So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
[55] O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
Yes, friends, we'll need our glorified bodies to "inherit the kingdom of God" and, again, said kingdom IS COMING TO THIS EARTH...even as Jesus taught us to pray.
Here's the deal...
Jesus had PREVIOUSLY told His disciples to whom He was actually speaking:
Matthew chapter 19
[27] Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
[28] And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Again:
Luke chapter 22
[28] Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
[29] And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
[30] That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
"In the regeneration" or at the time of Christ's second coming when the saints will receive their glorified bodies that they might enter into "the kingdom of God" RIGHT HERE ON EARTH, "the Son of man", JESUS CHRIST, "shall sit on the throne of His glory" or upon David's throne from within a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem and the twelve apostles (Matthias has replaced Judas) "shall also sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel". Seeing how Christ Himself will be residing within the temple in Jerusalem at that time from which He'll be ruling the world, He was merely informing His eleven disciples to whom He was actually speaking in John chapter 14 that they will likewise be "dwelling" there with Him in that "in His Father's house there are many DWELLINGS OR ABODES OR ROOMS"...which is what the underlying Greek word which is translated as "mansions" in the KJV actually means.
We're NOT getting "mansions" in heaven, friends.
Again, not only is heaven an intermediary place for Christians and NOT our final destination, but none of us will even have glorified bodies in heaven by which to allegedly live within a "mansion". No, we receive our glorified bodies, as the eleven to whom Jesus was actually speaking will, at the second coming of Christ or when "HE COMES AGAIN"...just like He actually said in John chapter 14.
Isaiah chapter 2
[1] The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
[2] And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
[3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
[4] And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Again:
Micah chapter 4
[1] But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
[2] And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
[3] And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Again, there is "the Father's house" or "the house of the LORD" and it is where both Jesus and the eleven to whom He was actually speaking will be residing at His second coming or when He "comes again" (John 14:3).
I hope that this helps.
