Well, while I'm here on this thread... I wish I could find a hiking or fishing or dancing buddy in Texas.

Hiking, fishing, and dancing? How are you still single?

Dancing always looked like fun to me. I've been looking for a dancing partner in my neck of the woods here. It's not expensive, you can do it just about anywhere at any time, and lessons are easy enough to come by. It's even pretty good exercise.

But I have a tip for you. Dab a tiny bit of this behind your ear, and go to the nearest sportsman's club.

Just a tiny bit though, too much and you'll attract car guys and not fishing and hiking guys - they'll confuse it for diesel fuel.

No well rounded self respecting man could ever mistake gun cleaning solvent for diesel fuel, they smell nothing alike.

I figured the kerosene in the Hoppes would throw people off. Although, Hoppe's has banana oil in it, which totally takes the edge off the kerosene, and gives it it's distinct aroma.

Next you're going to tell me no self respecting man can't tell the difference between diesel and kerosene. They blend the two together so much it gets confusing though - although the diesel is not straight run off of the distillation column, but instead goes through secondary processing.

Yeah. it's like a pipe and a cigarette. Like when you're heating a space with a kerosene burner or the same burner with diesel in it .

No kidding - that's all it is? Kerosene and banana oil?

Actually it's more than that..........from Hoppes MSDS sheet, Kerosene is actually the second ingredient by volume

I haven't had a whiff of Hoppes in over fifteen years and can still remember its aroma distinctly.

so what it's doing is working a little like wd40 with the high evaporation thinners and leaving the un-distilled oil from the Kerosene on the gun and whatever that citric stuff is to make it smell good.

You can learn a lot about a man by the solvents he uses.

So are you a break free guy? Rem oil? Windshield washer fluid (don't laugh, it does wonders for neutralizing black powder).

Well to be fair, the banana oil is more of a myth. Jim is right with the MSDS.

The sweet smell is the Amyl Acetate, or so I understand.

But you're exactly right, the thinners evaporate quickly and leave a nice scent behind. It doesn't do enough in the lubrication department so you need to augment it, but it does well for removing fouling.

I mean it's hard to find a good solvent that also acts as a good lubricant. In that regard even WD40 doesn't completely fit the bill - although the people's choice works well for almost every thing.

Squeaky mechanical object? WD-40. Need to lubricate something in a hurry? WD-40. Ran out of cutting oil- yep, WD 40. Break up with your girlfriend, you guessed it, WD 40.

you're not kidding about the smell of hoppes--it's very distinctive. it kind of makes me want to sneeze.

and removes adhesive residue when you're in a pinch, which makes me very happy : )

In recent years I've used a lot of mineral spirits, acetone, MEK, naptha and other solvents, but that's all in the line of work.

I haven't had need of gun cleaning solvents in fifteen years because I haven't owned one in that time.

And you are awesome for both knowing the smell of black powder and Hoppes. I guess you fall into the don't love it camp, as it's a either love it or don't love it kind of smell.

Havent... owned one...

I don't need a muzzle loader, but darn if it isn't fun to play with. I don't say what else I do or don't have except in chat, but this stuff is fun :D.

Also, all this talk of solvents and industrial cleaners has been one of the best threads on CC in a long time for me. It's really fun to work with one's hands sometimes. And I do know some do it for a living and it's not quite as fun - although sometimes my living takes me out into the field where it's below freezing and snowing, so I think I can safely say I still enjoy it (although I don't work with my hands).
