Your reccomendations for a laptop, you have any?

Whatever computer you choose make sure you get an antivirus. Currently, I have Avast and I have never had a single problem with it. I used to be an avid supporter of Norton, which is what my computer was installed with and was very disappointed. Good Luck on finding a good laptop.

If you want a nerd's opinion, go to ebay and get an off-lease Thinkpad for somewhere around $150. Every Thinkpad I ever got is still running.

Go to ebay's computers, choose laptop, choose PC laptop, select Thinkpad product line, select 4 gig RAM or more (if you want something that will still be useful ten years from now) and select a price range from $0 to $200. Choose "Buy it now" only. Sort by lowest price first, and look for the first T400 or T500 you find. Ignore the T60 and T61's, they're too old to be reasonably useful.

the kids have a friend whose dad works for IBM, and he gets 'em cheap.
one of our girls got one at Christmas and it's amazing!

however, Win 8 is every bit at horrible as it's described, imo.
our son told me a few days ago there's a Win 10 coming soon-ish?

no guarantees it'll be good, but it's hard to imagine it'll be worse!

I dont have paypal anymore, at least I dont think. He will allow me up to $600 for one

Alright, I think I'll have him pick up a cheapy at walmart and if it lasts 6 months fine, this is so complicated

Avast sucks.. I had it on my puter and it slowed it down to a crawl.. took it off and reinstalled Norton 360, and my computer speeded right up again..maybe the paid version of Avast works well, but the free one does not..

I am sorry that you had a problem with Avast. Yes I did pay for mine and that might be part of it. I had nothing but problems with Norton, it caused my computer not to run properly and not even allow me to get into my courses for school and it seems with Avast I have the freedom to get on there and in my opinion is much more affordable than the others. At the end of the month I get a monthly report on how many viruses Avast blocked and is mind blowing. I even have it available on up to three PC's and installed in on my mom's computer and she has not had any problems.

I personally have a ASUS.. I got it from Bestbuy, and it is a windows 8. I dont mind it, but it did take some getting used too. my husband is also a computer whiz. He knows just about anything about laptops and desktops and ipads and ipods, iphone... although, ive never seen him with an itoothbrush, but hey... we still have time to "invent" new things don't we??

wow.. Norton blocks anything that comes along on mine, even fake web attacks.. I also have anti-malware bytes and ccleaner.. Norton is expensive but worth it, IMO.

have your daughter marry a terrific guy with a doctorate in what's basically
computer engineering.
hand off all the problems to him and his geek pals.

Listen to the resident nerd. Get a computer with Win7 and get Microsoft Security Essentials. Yeah, MS has been plugging its own security holes lately. It's free. It will take care of antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc.

I have MCAfee on my other (and no problems) along wit system mechanics, they seem to do a good job.

I am sort of afraid of that saying you get what you pay for, every time I took a short cut (like get used stuff) the free stuff made you paid more in the end you know lol

I used the free version of Avast and it slowed down my puter to nearly non-working..I put Norton 360 back on and it sped up to normal again..N-360 works wonderfully for me.
