Do You Commit Sin?

Any honest Christian readily admits that they still sin... it's human nature to sin and we all still have that nature. The fact is this verse does not say a Christian will stop practicing sin as the NASB puts it.

Trust me, the newer translations will always keep you in bondage and lead you to believe that you have to work and make yourself better. The KJV accurately puts it as "doth not commit sin", which is the absolute truth.

Christians still sin, but they do not "commit sin" because there is no such thing as committing a sin in a born again persons life. In order to commit a sin, one has to transgress the law.

There is no law for Christians (because our husband is dead and we are freed from his law) hence Christians do not commit sin. Don't let these newer translations rob you of your joy and freedom in the Lord... rest in the finished work of Jesus.

EVERYONE sins. Yes, even the most pious, righteous christians sin. As you said, it's human nature. God made us that way. Whoever says they do NOT sin is a bald-faced liar..

Here is the verses you used with a bit more context.

1 John 3
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

It says whoever makes a practice of sinning (even professing Christians) is of the devil. This passage actually gives us a litmus test to tell who has been born of God and who is a child of the devil. Whoever does not practice righteousness and does not love his brother fails the test

Who knew you could fornicate, abuse, lie, steal, cheat, and beat up the Samaritan as much as you want and wouldn't have to account for it after death? Just don't get caught by the law while you're here on earth.

Nah, something is missing here. I'm sure you'll tell me that if you do these things then you aren't saved, but if all sins are equal in the eyes of the Lord, how can we say that we commit no sin? Doesn't make sense with what I know. Maybe I missed something and no one will be judged that is saved?

All of Paul's writings can be hard to understand

Romans 7
7 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.

4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

Here Paul is talking about the law of sin and death. We once were all obedient to it. But for those who have died with Christ and born again of the Spirit, we no longer are slaves to sin but belong to another, Christ and the Spirit.
When we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions were at work to bring us to death. But not we can serve in the new way of the Spirit.

If someone is still making a habit of sinning/serving the flesh, a slave to the law of sin and death, while at the same time professing Christ they are committing adultery.

This law is binding on us as long as we live, but when we are put to death with Christ, that law loses it's hold on us as we no longer act according to the flesh but according to the Spirit

Temptation would be present, but it's up to us as to whether we commit the sin or not. Jesus was tempted by Satan when being offered to submit to Satan. That's where the difference lies.

We all make a habit of some sin. Mostly, we try to do our best. We put our faith in the Lord that he will forgive if we ask and are sincere. We don't become Jesus when we become saved. He is the only one who did not sin, in all the earth for all time. So, we try. We fail. We ask for forgiveness when we recognize what we did and are sorry.

Instead of writing those laws in a book, Jesus wanted them written on our hearts. My belief is, that means folks went out and did the very thing I posted earlier. They sinned and then burnt a calf or killed a dove or whatever was the price for their sin. They had no desire to stop sinning because they knew they would be forgiven if they offered grain or whatever and kept the Sabbath. With Christ, it's all about wanting to be the best we can for God. It's about sincerity and effort and understanding. It's about truly trying not to sin because we don't want to hurt anyone. Because we love Jesus, we understand and appreciate what He did and we want to do the Father's will as Jesus did. But, we can't, because we are human and not God, be sinless. We are not, nor ever will be perfect, so for our failings, Jesus offered himself, the perfect sacrifice as payment for our sins. Sort of like the unblemished red calf, but that's not good enough to really describe the Lord.

Well, I may be wrong and I don't want to lead any one astray. That's what I believe right now and until something happens to change my mind, I will stick with that.

Yes we are all sinners saved by grace. John said that if we 'continue' in sin then we are not of God. There are two ways we can live: we can live in the flesh and continue in sin, or we can live in the Spirit and cease from sin.

That's a very slippery slope for humans to walk. We don't have to be sorry, or make amends, because we are justified in our faith? I can't accept that in light of the man who Jesus told he didn't know him because he never helped anyone or gave anything. Would't those all be sins to be forgiven or is that not under the new Covenant because it was before the sacrifice of Christ? Always a caveat?

What I highlighted above is contradictory. Christians are included in the group of "everyone." If a Christian sins, they ARE COMMITING a sin. Christians are no different than anyone else who sins.

As long as our flesh lives we serve the law of sin and death. Once we put the flesh to death with Christ, we are no longer compelled to live after the flesh but the Spirit. However, people can choose to live after the flesh, but that proves who their father really is. The laws of God always will exist, if we live by the flesh we will continue to offend God and His holy laws and the end result will not be good. There is no law against the Spirit of God and the things it causes us to do.

Galatians 5
6 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
