Several decades ago, my brother was missing. He was enlisted in the Air Force and deployed overseas. No letters had arrived in weeks, and no one had knowledge of his whereabouts. He was found stateside in a hospital. Diagnosis: Schizophrenia.

That was the beginning of a very hard journey to recovery. I'd suffered depression my entire childhood. Married and had children with all the baggage. My family was just overcoming the first onslaught as I completed my first year of college. Just prior to the third semester, I experienced fear, anxiety, paranoia. Not knowing how these operated, I was overwhelmed and felt I'd made a bad decision in my divorce, blamed myself for being a horrible mother who divorced their dad.

I drove my car off into a ditch. I lived. I dug a crowbar out and beat myself with it. I lived. I tried to slash my wrists. I lived. Stitches and a brief meeting with a chaplain left me still bereft of hope. I left for my home; my family several miles away.

Symptoms worsened. Voices began chastizing me and guilt upon guilt deepened my sorrow and my resolve. In three rounds of a suicide mission, I never heard the comforting words from family that I needed to hear, "You are loved." or "You are needed." "you are forgiven."

Of a rape, I was told, "We told you not to go there." and "Were you really raped?"

Of amnesia memories that began to flood back, I was told, "That never happened."

The day I told a family member I was actually sharing my story and talking it over with 'professionals', I was told, "It wasn't that bad."

It was the only confirmation I had from anyone that something happened. I needed so much for someone to help me heal...to hear me. Yet no one, nothing...until one hospitalization in particular. I picked up an alcoholic brochure for something to do and was immediately overwhelmed with a heaviness that was unexplainable.

It would be years before I emptied the last drink, threw away the last bottle and got free. It's five years this year free of that.

I began life in a new church. One that I noticed involved hugs from the women. I longed for that more than anything. These women would be a lifesaver to a drowning victim.

The voice had me running. Special diet, exercise, guilt, shame, lack of sleep, no TV, no radio, no newspaper...the messages were too intense. Long hard walks and painful accusations...even a city that refused to assist in a crisis, "unless I got better".

Consideration of a fourth suicide ensued. A larger voice threatened, "Do that and you go to hell."

I stopped, and started. He continued to assure me hell was the answer of that pit. The end of that story. We fought all weekend. I yelled. He threatened. I cried. He comforted. I yelled. Round after round, we went all weekend long. Monday morning, I stood at the window and I broke in anger..."Okay, I'll stay alive, but it's going to be like this!" I was broken. I was strengthened. I was loved.

My childhood was painful. Hard. Lonely. Save for the loving pets, I had none to really turn to. They tried. They suffered. I could not respond properly. The reason was a childhood secret. A rape by strangers who later threatened my Mother's life. That terrified me.

I was catatonic for several days. Finally I came to. Our life crumbled.

Father drank. Mother argued. People judged. Siblings hated.

I'd learned the art of withdrawing even in noisy places. A bus of noisy children? No problem. I learned how to read by the grace and gift of God.

Those beautiful women from my church sat in my home one evening, several years later. offered sound advice in listening to music - Christian music. I learned to call on Jesus' name to fend off the evil voice. I still hear a voice. If it lies in any form I'm aware of, I call on Jesus. If I'm not sure, I call on Jesus. If I need His comfort, I call on Jesus.

I've sung praise and worship, led the church, played my trumpet and taught small children of this beautiful God we have. I've written songs. I work in a mental health facility, and attempt to witness as a peer. If I'm unable to preach of the Lord, I teach His values.

I still have some depression, but I am so much stronger for the journey. Helping another has become my strongest cure for what ails in the mental health concerns.

Praise God! I am Victorious through the blood of our dear Lord Jesus Christ.

student, the title of this thread caught my eye. :) I also was raped by my first boyfriend. He gagged me, tied me to the bed and assaulted me. Afterwards, I didn't tell anyone, and I didn't go to the cops. I wrote a letter to a friend of mine, and told him what happened, because he knew my boyfriend. I foolishly left the letter on my table, and went to visit a neighbor across the hall from me. When I came home my parents were in my apt, and had found the letter and read it. Looking back now, I don't think they believed me because they never asked what happened, who did it, etc. And they never urged me to go to the cops and have him arrested.

After the rape, every time I went out in public I felt like somehow people just knew that I had been raped, even though that was silly. He turned me from a happy, trusting person, into a doubtful introvert. That happened in 1993 and I still remember it like it happened yesterday.

If you haven't read my depression and suicide threads yet, please do so. :) They are my own personal story of how I dealt with those subjects and with God's help, overcame them. A few years ago, my depression had the best of me, and I got slammed with several things at once, and I very literally nearly went off the deep end. I could envision a mental image of myself hanging from a rafter out on my back porch. That's when I knew something needed to change. God lifted me up out of that dark place, and I came online and found CC. This site has literally been a life-saver for me, and I love everyone here. :) If you ever want to message me and talk about this, or whatever, my inbox is always open. God bless you, sweetie. :)

Hello student, I would like to recommend a book for you called Pigs In The Parlor by Frank and Ida Mae Hammond. This book was written by two Christians in 1973. They were a husband and wife who were in the deliverance ministry and have since passed away. The voices you hear and the depression are no doubt caused by evil spirits. They can be cast out. The book will teach you Bible based principals for expelling demons from your body. There are lots of testimonials in the book. You could also read books on that subject by an author named Derek Prince. Hope that helps. You can private message me if you have any questions. God bless.

Depression is NOT caused by evil spirits. She doesn't have demons inside her, and she doesn't need anything cast out. She needs only to trust God and rely on him to get her through. People today are too quick to blame demons for every disease that someone has. I've had depression all my life, and it was only within the last few years that God helped me get through it. :) I didn't and don't have demons in me. And neither does student. Depression can be genetic, not demonic. It's caused by life events and bad circumstances, not demons.

Student and blue, it's wonderful that you can both stand up and declare your testimonies. You are both truly more than conquerors in Christ Jesus. Praying that you will both continue to grow and move forward in Christ walking in the new creation that you are. :)

Romans 8:35-39 NKJV
[35] Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? [36] As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." [37] Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. [38] For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, [39] nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I second that, Demons get far too much credit; in my case I have a chemical, I was given Lexapro and another Psychotropic drug, thank God for it, it different is drastic, I just got to take them.

with this I have to Disagree with.. Saints at times will go thru times when they may get depressed n spirit, but its God that holds them UP .. indeed! thru His Keeping Power and Word AND THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT, a man made depression, fueled and driven by the spirit of disobedience, some of those are truly 'powered by devils', because they inhabit the flesh and bone of the un righteous person soul and spirit, OTHERS are not.. taking medication to cure or change a person's behavior as a Christian, that is 'withcraft-sorcery- the Word Describes that.. Paul explains in Galatians, Ive been thru the whole 9 yards of that stuff, with witchcraft sorcery, chrisitans trying to change and mold your behavior because it doesnt fit 'their' jesus they have cut up.. been thru all that and I testify today that God's Saints at times go thru depressing times, and most of the time is during the heat of spiritual warfare or a time of 'testing'.. God carries them thru... I've tasted on both sides.. and God's Power and Grace is SUFFICENT... if ye are led of the Spirit... indeed!

That was quite a testimony. I imagine it was hard for you to write this. Thank you for sharing it and hopefully it will be a comfort and inspiration to others who find themselves in similar straights. God Bless You.

I fully concur with you. You are performing a mighty work in your threads outlining how you were able to overcome your struggles with the help of God.

Yes i agree with the op. Love is a powerful thing and that is what the Lord does and we need to love as he did.

From my point of view, I'm not possessed, yet it was demons trying to destroy me. This is a much shortened version of the loooong story. Professionals tried almost every medication on the market. Haldol was the next step. That would have left me incoherent and drooling and perhaps locked up for the rest of my life. I trusted God. It's been a journey. I still listen to a voice. I couldn't convince anyone it's God, but this voice is why I'm sober, this voice is the reason I stopped "phantom" cutting; I didn't even know I was doing that, this voice is why I stopped hurting myself in many other ways. The memories I've had did not end with the childhood rape, but rather go further. I thank all of you for your love and concern. I'm considered to have schizo-affective disorder; severe and profound. I work closely with a therapist - albeit Christian therapist - to root out the 'rest of the story. The reason for the demon attack is that I will be a sincere threat to them someday. Maybe even today... Love to all... -student

You just offered hope. You just showed a comeback so complete and so beautiful that others will be drawn by your testimony because they can relate. You changed something ugly into beauty. You realized that by serving others, the focus on SELF takes back seat and all fears, temptations and even voices are no longer subjective to your well being but that your focus on others takes real courage, real LOVE, exactly what JESUS did for you and I. SISTER..I applaud you, I cry with tears of joy over this VICTORY that will keep moving forward! PRAISE GOD for you, for your mission for your testimony, and for this gut wrenching reality that has an awesome ending! THANK YOU...this is what is needed here. THIS is much better than 'oh, what shall I do with my good looks and my frumpy boyfriend who gives me no attention" drama. GOD bless you as you grow in grace and knowlege...I would be ever so proud to have you as a DNA family member, for I too have kinfolk who have faced the same issues in their lives. I want to be the person that will make a difference in their lives. Thank for giving me gumption to do this. You and I are Brother/SISTER in CHRIST now and rejoice with you!!!!!

amen and amen. She gave me permission to post her testimony on my suicide and depression threads so that it will receive more coverage when people read my story, because they'll also be able to read hers and hopefully be blessed and inspired by her story as well. :)
