I think the use of the word "stumble" or "offend" indicates it goes beyond the obvious issue of abuse and neglect. The New Testament consistantly teaches that we are to be our "brother's keeper"Amen/

I know of a man that because he saw a Christian he knew drunk and swearing, was totally turned away from anything to do with Christianity.

should have, would have...the fact remains that because of this Christians acts/words, his heart has been hardened towards God.....this is why it is so important not to do/say things that can cause others to stumble.

Well why do we always assume that it is the christians' fault that another person loses salvation, and not their own fault for a) not looking towards Christ alone for savlation but towards others, and b) not having enough love and forgivness to see past other's shortcomings and consider their own, and c) not enough faith and discipline to stick with it.

the unsaved are quick to look for excuses- christians should not buy into their blame mentality

this shows that the ungodly knows God has a claim on them and are looking for ANY excuse

While I do not believe we should allow ourselves to be spiritually blackmailed, we must keep in mind the commandment, to let our lives so shine before men that they will glorify our Father in heaven.

I am just very wary of spiritual bullys

they quote "abstain from all appearance of evil" and then place whatever taboo they want under its cloak

It doesn't matter what level of legalism you rise to, a bully will always find something more to push at you.

yeah most people will always put their short comings on other people, but that will not wash before a Holy God , why don't you tell your friend if they know the true way that Christians should act, then they ought to be teaching others instead of walking away

a)they don't even know who Christ is and believe it or not, unbelievers look at Christians how they act.
b)They don't know Christ so how are do they obtain Agape love let alone acknowledge their own shortcomings.
c)They are unbelievers who don't know Christ so how does this apply to them?

This is the second time you have labeled me a "spiritual bully" for stating what the Word of God says!....are you serious?

First, he is not my friend but was one of my "bosses" at work. Yes you are right it won't wash before a Holy God which I did tell him among other things.

I just don't understand you guys, you all quote scripture from the Bible that you all claim to be The Inspired Word of our God, then you defend the Christians that do not hold to the Word of God. Does the Bible not teach us that we should be a light unto the world, that we should not cause others to stumble on account of our actions and words, that we are held accountable for our actions and words and even more so if we are in leadership?

The tongue kills. A persons spirit can be broken to pieces. It's very well known that Christians are the best ones to turn people away from God.

I sincerely believe that this is not possible. Individuals turn from God, using any number of reasons or excuses not to submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit, failing to acknowledge their own state of corruptness. Yes it is possible to cause someone to sin, but not to turn away from God, or to completely reject the message of salvation.

I'm hesitant to blame the church, or else individuals who reject God on the basis of having been turned away by the church, would have an excuse when they stand before God the judgement.

We cannot forget that the message of salvation is both internal and external. We are hopefully the bearers of great news when we preach the gospel to a lost soul, but those whose hearts have been hardened against the truth will search for reasons not to serve God.

There are even Christians, who use the existence of hypocrisy in the church, as a reason to stay at home and avoid fellowship with other believers. This is a choice. Rejecting Jesus is not the fault of the church.
