I think one thing that could put us on the right track is to stop emphazing that a collage education is necessary.
All this does is lead most young people into a huge dept they can never pay and no jobs.
Turn our high schools in to trade and tech schools that teach kids skills that can be used when they graduate.
When I was in school 50 plus years ago, we were taught practical skills that made us ready for the workforce.
I learned welding, electrical wiring, carpentry, how to read blue prints, simple auto repairs ETC while still in high school.
I had several different direction I could go when I went looking for a job.
I know that collage is necessary for some jobs, but most young people would be better off learning a practical trade.
Just raising the min wage is not the answer because it will only encourage some to be satisifed to stay where they are and will not work hard, learn, be productive so they can advance to better paying jobs.
I believe the problem we have today started when we began to encourage everyone to go to collage, stopped teaching practical skill, and failling those students who would not learn while in high school.

This would not solve the problem today, but would lead to a better siruation in the furture.
Maybe we should require those who are on any form of government assistance to go back to school and pass every class or cut them off.

There are lots of problems with that too. For one if we punish the parents we punish the children too. 2 all trades are over run with workers and are now low paying jobs. The repairs are expensive and fewer people can afford to pay for them. That means less jobs and even lower pay for workers. We need salutions that don't create more problems. Salutions that help children not hurt them. Thanks for your in put.

I'm sorry to learn they go to public school. No worse way to learn. The learning is slow. What they teach is by design wrong in every way. They teach children to be slaves. It's always been that way. It will stay that way if we don't do something to change it.

i would never home school, i would never want my kids to grow up into interverted social outcast. i went to public school and never had an issue discerning between truth and their bias garbage. i want my kids prepared for the real world, my home is far from that.

i agree with that. college grads now think their degree is a 1 way ticket to easy street and they couldnt be more wrong. the sad truth is there are getting to be more and more jobs that require bachelor degrees than 20 yrs back, nursing, sales, how is college going to teach you to close sales, college will never be able to make a person a salesman that talkes to people like a robot.
starting factory workers around here start as low as 8 hr. thats not even 50 cents better than burger flipping at mc donalds. very scary when you think about it

I disagree that the trades are low paying jobs.
Have you tried to hire a plumber, a carpenter, or electriction lately?
A couple of years ago I paid an air conditioner repair man $100 plus parts for a repair that took less than an hour.
I guess it just depends on what you call a reasonable income to live a comfortable life.
I never made more that $40,000 a year in my life, but I bought several homes, new cars and trucks, sent my two kids to collage, and have a very comfortable retirement.
The key is to spend your mone wisely.

i agree but we are talking about 2 different things. independents and employees. i fear soon the independents will be gone, i used to be one but was forced out by big corperations who pay slave wages and laugh all the way to the bank.

Do you know how long it takes to become a plumer or an electrition. The guy who did the work(if he works for someone else ) didnt get $100. He only got maybe $10 or as much as $16. 40 is enough to do that if it's steady. I made 80 for a few years but gave it away. To much love in my hart for the less fortunate. I'm really good with my money now. The problem is it's never steady. I get a raise. Then someone comes along wanting my job and they get it because they'll work cheaper. I live in a right to work state. I can get fire for no reason. I'm extremely good at my job but that's not enough to be able to keep it. This problem is spreading too. Trades for the most part now only pay $8 to $10 dollers an hour. That's not enough to take care of a family!!!! People are having to live together to share expences. Not just 2 people but 4 and 5 in small apartments. Things are getting pretty rough in our country. There going to get worse. The wealthy have grabbed up 92% of the gross national product. That's not much for the rest of us. There going to suck up more. All money they have no use for. 40's not bad. I'm doing good now to get in the 20's if I want to keep my job!!! This is the world your children are facing.g

You guys seem to be focused on American slavery in the workforce here in America. I don't really have much to add to that discussion; but I will add some to the broader term.

In the traditional sense of slavery, sure it definitely still exists. Ever wonder where your chocolate comes from? Sugar? There are slaves, often children, who are forced to collect these things we consider novelties in our own country. In some countries there are children who are forced into rebel militia, often forced to kill their own parents and are injected with drugs.

Across the entire world there are sex slaves, the sex trade is very large right here in the United States. I live outside of a major hub, Atlanta. The super bowl each year is known as one of the largest sex trafficking events every year in the US. Some countries have stricter policies in place to protect slaves, others have little to none. Corporations often care very little for where their raw materials or labour come from.

I'm particularly burdened however for those who are sex trafficking victims. The majority are women, often who have been taken or sold by their own family, removed from their home countries, drugged, raped multiple times daily. Virgins are a higher price. Girls who are stuck in sex slavery are often as young as 5 years old. Many prostitutes, right here in America even, are forced into prostitution. The pornography industry is fuelled by slavery as well.

In developed nations slavery is often not seen very visibly or we choose to ignore it. I was walking through a city in Eastern Europe a few years ago with a friend, a young woman approached trying to get us to go with her to a brothel. In another city in the same country a young man was advertising a brothel, when we refused he also suggested maybe men were our preference. At one point in time I would have thought these things were sinful heathens obsessed with sex, or not willing to find a real job other than selling their bodies. But through learning of the modern-day sex trade I have come to realize much of my viewpoint was horribly wrong.

I'm not suggesting there aren't those out there who actually want to sell their bodies in that way. But I am also saying slavery takes many forms across the globe and none of it can be ignored. As the body of Christ there is no room to NOT speak out for justice in the world.

There are many organizations working to fight different forms of modern-day slavery. Slavery is having a brighter light shined on it these days. Such as with the End It Movement by Passion every year, International Justice Mission, etc.

Are you for real? Tell me this isn't true. You would rather not have children go to school at all, and if they do, they should be paid to go? You see this as slavery, and not a privilege? Take my hand and let me take you to Haiti, or Nepal, two of the poorest countries in the world so you can see how NO education works. This attitude you display is anything but CHRIST-like. God honors the heart, not what is being worn on our backs or what we have in our wallets. We just lost Nelson Mandella. Read his story please while you cry tears of joy over the international victories he accomplished, through the poverty, through the imprisonment and more. So sad you feel "FORCED" to give your children an education. Consider it an honor that they can achieve an education in this world today. Shame on you!!!!!

The world we live in today is very different from the world you grew up in. To learn at all is a privilege that children no longer understand. The drop out rate is very high. A low wage trade doesn't help them buy a car never mind a home. Their forced to work under the table and collect welfare to make ends meet. A highschool education is only a ticket to a minimum wage job. Public schools in our country are now rated 28th in the world. So children are given a poor education at best. We need to do something more to motivate these children. We also need to make more improvements. What would you suggest?

And college students majoring in Lesbian Poetry are of no value to the American Workforce. These drones leave school being completely unmarketable, and when they can't find a job they become government dependents, thus adding to the already existing burden that has been placed upon the working slaves, I mean workforce.

Rich children can learn what ever they want to!!! They don't need jobs. Stupidity is not what this chat was ment for! I did enjoy reading your post. thanks for the laugh!!!
